It's nice that with time all the missing things are filled in - be it missing fuel mechanics in HOI4 or economics in stellaris. But there is one big blocked of space right in the middle of every Stellaris game that has so far been ignored.:

1.: The supermassive black hole in the center of probably every galaxy.

It could be represented as a black hole that covers half of a trinary star sized map and would be a much less random system for things like a L-Gate. Other systems surrounding this central system, containing black holes, stellar remnants, Wolf–Rayet stars and other volatile celestial objects (and space creatures)
https://www.scientificamerican.com/...py-swarms-of-black-holes-at-our-galaxys-core/
would make hyperlane travel in this space regions more difficult which brings me to point 2 of my thread.

2.: Researching better Hyperdrives is of too little consequence at the moment.

However if there were Hyperspace Lanes that required them like those leading to the galactic core and its surrounding systems or (clusters of) stars at the galactic rim then these techs would become much more vital.
And these isolated systems could be good places for new encounters.

3.: As for getting Zro.

Exploration:
The sealed system with the mysterious tanker and the corrupted avatar that is only accessible through a wormhole and spawns in every galaxy. I once got the "Below Zro" anomaly there and and it fit so well that I didn't deem it a coincidence then since it would be the perfect dessert for the shroud entity. So make that a staple.
Diplomacy:
Dathnak's gone Psionic
If you get the Ascendancy perk further interaction with the gaseous fellows would make sense so why not let them be productive and let them generate some spice for you maybe even let them coalesce into things like shroud avatars.
Those who favour "The Flash is Weak" might give them some nanites and eventually lead them to generate living metal.
Piety:
If you have entered a contract with a shroud patron then you should get another temple tech that allows you to upgrade one citadel of faith and get your Zro from worshipping your Psy-God.
Just siphoning some off - who's gonna notice?:
2.2 added the Portal to Dimension [X] planet event that may contain a pathway to a mirror universe (trade), null void (antimater/void beam weapon) and a place of suffering. So why not add the shroud's address to the list to get some Zro. If you didn't get lucky with the roll on your dimension some research project should be able to fix that once you have access to the shroud. If you did get lucky it should lead to events that unlock the psionic theory research option.

I think its a great idea but you would need a ton of variation in what the center contains between games so it can be a gamble to even conquer it, otherwise the random generation would loose some of its charm.

As for the better hyperlane tech allowing you to use new lanes, i like the idea in theory but it would need a lot of thinking through to get right.

I also agree you should be able to upgrade a church on your capitol if your spiritualist and have one of those gods that eat planets and things, not sure about getting zro off of it though.

I like the idea of making the galactic centre "special" whether that's by gating systems behind powerful monsters, or requiring special hyperdrive tech, I'm of no opinion. But having eldritch horrors there would add some more exploration for the mid and late game.

Thank you, I think the strategic value of being able to traverse that area alone would make it useful in the late game more so in larger galaxies. As for what you find there - a lot of interesting fictional and non fictional things I can imagine but even without a lot of variation (L-Cluster) it would be no more boring than regular space.

As for the rim of the galaxy imagine if you unlock the Tachyon Sensor Tech and your scientists notice faint energy readings near some Stars at the edge of the galaxy you send a science ship there and discover a hyperlane that seemingly leads into empty space, what will you find there?

An enigmatic nation that shrouds its suns in dyson spheres/swarms?
A fallen empire that inhabits habitats around black holes using advanced tech to gather energy from them?

I did suggest "unstable" hyperlanes before, which require a research for sight, then for science ship navigation, before finally being accessible to all vessels (in the form of advanced hyperdrive). Scattered all round, so that, in the mid game, the galactic topography changes just a little bit...
Putting something like a cross between that and l-gates towards the more core-ward ring is a neat idea.

I like the idea with the unlockable hyperlanes. I had a similar idea, using wormholes. Stellaris has the problem, that the Galaxy gets small pretty fast. So this System could be used to further improve the system of the galactic terrain. I think of whole quadrants or clusters, that are not accessible from the start. This could be done either by separating them with wormholes, or through hyperlanes that are only accessible with higher tier hyperdrives. These cut off Clusters should also not be the exception, but the norm. In my Civilization playthroughs I started more often than not on a large Island, without anything to conquer. The fun started once I researched my first ships and was able to explore the nearby coasts, in hope to find some unclaimed lands to expand to. I really loved these sessions, because everyone else tended to be far more advanced than I was. Also the AI had made diplomatic connections, which made waging war against them so much more fun.

Imagine starting in your own little corner of the Galaxy, cut of from anyone else. The only way to connect with the rest of the galaxy is by researching this tier 2 hyperdrive tech. And once you do, there is this huge fanatic purifier, far more advanced and much bigger than you are, and blocking the only way that leads out of your territory. The only choice you have is to fortify your position in hope to delay the inevitable war in hope to either get an ally beyond that big scary monster, or to research Wormhole Stabilization to use the wormhole that leads to the other side of the galaxy. There also could be whole parts of the galaxy that aren't connected by the hyperway network, and are only accessible through wormholes, or if you are lucky enough, through the first Gateway that gets activated. There should even be parts of the galaxy that are only accessible, once you invented the highest hyperdrive tier, and some even only with jump drives.

I really like your idea of expanding the galactic terrain. It would enable a goldilocks starting zone and once you expand your can have areas where spaceborn aliens roam more freely without unbalancing the game. This also make for good spots for leviathans and expanding their backstories - what's in the systems behind the enigmatic fortress? a fallen empire, pirates, zanaam.
Could the Kettling worlds that lie past the Dimensional Horror be behind it's failed summoning that afterwards drove them mad and caused their downfall or is the Spirtual Fallen Empire behind it still alive and will unleash it upon the galaxy should it awaken...
