I've stopped playing EUIV completely. As soon as I start a game, I quit about an hour into it because of the constant, mind-numbing clicking in The Holy See menu. Love this game, but this really spoils it for me, just bogs the game down.

I know there have been many suggested fixes already, any chance we will see a revamped version of this any time soon?

It can be annoying at times, I agree. But I dont believe this is game breaking at all. You can easily go into the message settings and disable the message you get saying that your cardinal is no longer loyal. And not only that, if you would like, you can just avoid the whole thing by not investing in cardinals at all. But if you do want to have a "papacy puppet", just disable the message setting and invest whenever you like in your cardinals.

It's very frustrating yes, but i have personally decided to to care about it very much. I invest in cardinals on a regular basis, like 1-2 times a year waiting for my points to gather. I agree a better less tedious system is very much needed, though.

I've tried dumping a bunch of points into a few cardinals that have a shot at promotion, but when I do so I feel like I'm not in complete control. Also, if you just bypass the papacy, you're missing out on several perks including that extra diplomat which can be crucial.

You could always stockpile your points every 6 months, then steal most of the cardinals. I mean it can be tedious but I do not think the current system is broken.

The best technique I've found is to hoard influence until a new candidate pops up and then dump them into him, if you get far enough ahead they generally get left alone by other countries. And you're not wasting time sitting there clicking once every few months.

It's much better than it was on release, but the papacy still needs some work to turn it from a chore to an interesting gameplay aspect. First step is to let us spend more than 5 points at once so we don't have to spam click so damn much, like adding shift+click to add 50 points to one cardinal or something. It'd also be nice to slow down how often cardinals switch, possibly by forcing a country to get X more votes to take the cardinal rather than simple majority, or an arbitrary lock-in time after gaining majority where that cardinal can't be influenced. The SOI system from Vicky 2 is another option, though that'd be a fairly large system for what is ultimately only one minor-ish aspect of a huge game.

Edit note-It's not about "the papacy is too hard to control" it's "the papacy is too annoying to control." Dumping every 6 months certainly works (and generally works fine), but during quiet years on speed 5 it's still tedious. It's also still way too many clicks, especially when you're in the late game.

Yeah, but you never know at which exact point they can become the new Pope. So if you are lagging behind, having not invested yet, some other ruler will be papal controller. This is why the current system encourage us to invest all the friggin time, and its kinda annoying yes. I'd like some auto invest function, where you can select one and all ur points goes into that, so we dont have to bother all the friggin time.

The only time cardinal management annoys me is when Spain is competing for one of my cardinal candidates and Portugal is competing for the other.

I hate how spain and france always have insane papal control.
France is not a problem; France is merely huge. Spain is even huger (due to colonization) and also has a papal influence bonus from its ideas.

You don't need to invest points as soon as you get them - wait until you have a bunch of points, and use enough of them to take a future cardinal (plus a bit of buffer so that you don't have to immediately go back and invest more). It's a lot less tedious that way.

I suppose it must be only annoying if you play on fast speeds, because I really don't have an issue with it.
That's exactly what i thought. I run the game on speed 1, and i swap to speed 2 or 3 only between wars. Hell, i'm always moving around explorers and conquistadors, even in peacetime.

I usually play on two or three tick speed, one (sometimes two) if I'm in a war. I've never really had a problem with the cardinal system either. Just build up influence for awhile and spend it all in 5-6 quick clicks. Takes a few seconds every so often... it's no more annoying than constructing buildings or raising troops really.
