I never spent any time figuring it out, thought it was a ship with white sails, which I always felt didn't really fit. A dove makes much more sense.

I thought that a ship with white sails was a bit of a strange one. I suggest they make it a dove whose entrails are being ripped out by a hawk but then the hawk gets food poisoning and dies. Would be an improvement i think.

If the icon scares you, what about you actual effect of call for peace? THAT is truly horrifying. Especially, when you have the warscore to enforce a peace heavily in your favor, but no dip-points to get the things you want.

It's clearly a glove. It might just be tassels, or another glove.

I always thought of a pair of gloves. I can think of cavalry wearing such; doesn't appeal as very "general-ish", but definately military oriented. Also appeals as nobility. I definately have other icons troubling me, but not the dove. It has always been a self-explanatory one to me. I'm more disturbed by the new Benin (?) flag.
