Chapter 10: Evers, 1509-1518, part 7

The shock of some far off guy in a dress giving Brunei to Port-u-gale left a deep scar in the King. He no longer trusted these Port-u-gese and by extension any of the other Europeans. Evers never did have the heart to tell the old King that his family was European.

On the 4th day of January in 1516, word trickled into the capital that the evil alliance of Pegu and Ayutthaya had grown by one as the Dai Viet threw out all hopes of being recognized as a civilized nation.

Their decision.

Their consequences.

The next day, the age-old conflict between the mighty Chinese and the scum of the earth, Manchu, was resumed. Evers drafted a long note of support to the Chinese and offered them any help they would need.

Three days later a event occurred which was sad for all of Brunei. Sulabanka, the man who had helped discover much of the region that had been claimed by Brunei, died in an accident on his horse. His horse was spooked by a snake and therew the intrepid explorer down where he broke his neck. The man lived for only a short time and his last words were

"For Brunei, for Bulkiah."

He will be sorely missed and his nation went into three weeks of mourning.

The King decided to finance 100 colonists or an expansion in the colony that had been the last founded by the great man. More then 500 men and women rushed to volunteer and the King choose only the ones with the most to offer the new colony. It came as no surprise when word arrived int he capital that the new colonists were successful. The King was heard to say

"For Sulabanka. Forever."

On May 6, 1516, the ambassador from Dai Viet asked for permission to meet with Evers. Evers was still enroged that Dai Viet was allied with those monsters to the West and he made the man wait three days. Finally, he allowed the ambassador to enter his office.

"Speak quickly and begone. Your nation is not welcome here."

"Fine. Anal droppings of the world. I have been asked to come to this third rate capital ina 4th rate nation to tell you that Le Chieu Tong is the new monarch of my great nation. Be warned. He will stamp your puny little nation into the dustbin of history."

Without waiting for a reply, the ambassador turned and left.

Be careful with those evil port-u-guese! Worse yet... be careful of the evil alliance of Ayutthaya, Pegu and Dai Viet. Evil by evil, what if they ally with Port-u-gail?

Watch out those manchurians!

That would be the worst nightmare for Brunei.

In 1519, Spain and Portugal are allied. Ayutthaya, Dai Viet and Pegu are allied. And Pegu does not yet know of the existence of Spain or Portugal (safe!!!)

Chapter 10: Evers, 1509-1518, part 8

1517 dawned during one of the most horrific thunderstorms in recent memory. All the parties planned for this day were cancelled.

The storms were relentless. Day after day they continued.

On the 10th, a small fleet put to sea. On board was a young man named Pitalu and his family. They were planning on moving to Mindoro to the North and establishing a 5 and 10 in the wild land.

The saga of this small ship became famous in songs, handed down from generation to generation.

The legend lives on from the Sibuyan on down
Of the big sea they called South China Sea
The sea, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of January turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six hundred pounds more
Than the Binangonan weighed empty.
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of January came early.

The song continued in this way for a few more verses, but the message was clear. On the night of January 11, 1517, the ship went down in a terrible storm and all hands were lost.

After this disaster, Evers banned further attempts at colonies and 5 and 10 pending a full review. Instead, he ordered a full overhauling of the entire navy to try and avoid a repeat of the wreck of the Binangonan. This effort paid off in April when a reformation of the entire navy was overhauled.

Evers' spent the summer preparing for the next attempt. By late September, all was ready. The new and improved navy performed brilliantly. The merchants were delivered to Mindoro with no loss of life or material.

The new trading post was scheduled to open in early October. What Evers and the rest of the planners had not considered was the hate of the Koreans. They sent out a small death squad which set on the poor S'tinfi family in the middle of the night the day before the store was to open. When dawn came, there was nobody left alive in the small post!

Evers was crushed by this. He spent the rest of 1517 in consultaiton with his King. They had no answer for this kind of evil.

No answer at all.

On January 1, 1518, the dejected first advisor to the King was in in his office at dawn. He saw the ambassador from Mataram coming up the pathway. Evers stept out on the porch.

"Sir. If you say anything haughty to me I will see that your nation is crushed. Speak quickly and then be gone."

"M'Liege, many pardons. I know that my predecessor was rude and unbecoming of a gentlement to you and yor great nation. I know that the time is not right yet for our nations to heal this rift. I come to tell you that Bhre Pandan Solar has passed on. His memopry will not be revered in my nation for the harm he caused in relations with you and with other nations in the region.

Our new monarch is Pengeran Sabrang Lar. I do hope that time will heal the wounds."

These gracious words spoken, the ambassador turned and left.

Tink knew his time was short in Brunei. He spent most of the last year organizing a new colonial effort. His hard work climaxed on april 8 when Timorville was founded. It was a great day for Brunei!

Danger is lurking everywhere and the colonial effort seems to be faltering... Times seem gloomy, apart from the possible improvement of relations with Mataram.

Where is the light at the end of this tunnel?!? When will the Korean goons and their Peguese cronies be punished for all their evil?!?

Am I going too far over the top here? :p Anyway, I'll follow the unfolding events with great interest. :)

Actually, in reality it is Going pretty well. Anybody who has tried to colonize this region knows that the natives are nasty and the percents aren't the best. In general, my chance of success was 30-40% at best.

To give you a hint, the period of general infra buildup is almost over. My income is up to the point where I am not on life support. As you can see, I am financing a lot of colonial/trading post attempts!

Chapter 11: Tink, 1519-1528, part 1

POUF

Tink reappeared in a clearing. He had done this before so this was expected.

Tink reappeared in a clearing with no clothes. He had been through this before and knew that when he asked Cybil for clothes, She would send him some.

Tink appeared in a crowded clearing with no clothes. This wasn't good. The first thing Tink heard was the scream of dozens of mothers who saw a naked man standing in the middle of a clearing where an instant before there had been nothing.

Screams broke out.

People ran from the clearing.

A very red Tink waited till Cybil provided some appropriate attire and then snuck off to a cabin he had left not too far from this clearing.

Tink felt pretty good about himself. He decided to forego his usual habit of spending some time reacquainting himslef with what Evers did during the last ten years. Instead, he went straight to his office.

Waiting for the Number One advisor to the King was the Trade Minister, K'atupitichifuni.

"M'Liege, His Majesty told me that a new advisor to the King would be coming in today. May I ask your name, sir?"

"Of course, of course. I am Joe Tinkers from Chicago."

"I know not where this chi'kago may be found, but the name you give is the correct one. I come today with a proposal for a new trade ordinance. The former adviser had not the time to review my notes and I wish to move on this quickly."

Tink took the papers from the man and on a whim decided to sign them without reading them. Afterwards, he hoped that he hadn't set himself up for problems.

After that, the day went from bad to worse.

A man who had never been seen in Brunei before landed in a boat that afternoon. He jumped from the boat and ran to the palace. He demanded to see the King. A short time later he was shown into a room with Tink and the King where he could present his news.

"Your Majesty. I have travelled from a far-off land known as Europe. I have news of the gravest import. Father Martin Luther has broken with the Catholic Church by presenting his 97 theses. The Diet of Worms has just asked him to recant his heresy and when he refused he formed his own church. Shall I continue?"

The look on the King was one of utter amazement. He sent the messenger out of the room and turned to Tink.

"Err, glad to see that you have returned, good sir. I have a few questions for you....

What is a your-up?

Why did this man's dad leave this kathilick church?

What is a theses and why did he have so many of them? Can you eat them? drink them?

And most importantly, why did a bunch of worms care?"

The King was in utter shock...

Theses is actually a dish made of banana and spice... I think it is a clear insult to the peacefull kingdom of Brunei!

:D

Who cares about that heresy if the brunei citizens don't meet her?

Chapter 11: Tink, 1519-1528, part 2

The King was in utter shock with the news that the kathilick church and some guy name loother had had a falling out and gone their own ways. He had no idea why this mattered to Brunei, but he was willing to wait and see.

On January 6, the Arakan advisor asked to see Tink.

"M'Liege, I have sad news. I have been ordered by my King that he has decreed that the royal marriage between our two nations is over. I know that this upsets you and I will take my leave of you. Again, I am sorry."

This news was shocking. Why would the Arakan monarch do this act? Would did he break up the happy marriage that had resulted in three heirs to the throne? Was this a prelude to war?

Tink at once put the military on a higher footing. He did not call up the reserves, but he did order the fleet to return to the home waters in preparation for whatever would come.

Things were very tense that January. People walked the streets looking over their shoulders. In early February, news arrived in the capital that Vientiane had broken the vassalization she had with Dai Viet. A day later, war had been declared between Vientiane and the evil alliance of Ayutthaya, Pegu and Dai Viet. Tink immediately went into conference with the King and they decided there was nothing they could do for Vientiane. She had made her own bed of thorns a number of years ago and now had to pay the price.

In March, the war threatened to spread into Tibet. The Dalai Llama found a way to at least delay the way by agreeing to allow the Pegu troops to march through Tibet unmolested.

A week later, this provocation led to the Chinese entering into an alliance with the Vientiane. The Chinese Emperor immediatly sent a declaration of war to the Evil Alliance.

The tension in the region led to an upswing in pressure for colonists. By late spring, Tink gave into the pressure and agreed to send a colony fleet off to Buru. The fleet left in early June.

Two days out of port, the fleet was set upon by a pirate fleet. The savage nature of the fleet was incredible. The pirates showed no interest in booty. They simply set on the colonists and killed them and sunk the fleet.

The tension in the region now was so think you could cut it with a knife.

In December, things got even worse. Word arrived that the government in Nippon had collapsed.

Tink decided to further cement our relations with the Chinese to help protect relations. He negotiated a marriage between a distant relative of the Emperor and the King's third cousin.

On December 16, incredible news arrived in the capital. Vientiane had beaten the evil alliance! They were forced to pay for damages.

Tink was shaken by the events of this year. He decided to raise tariffs to protect Brunei businesses from this agressive new world Brunei was in.

On this note, 1519 drew to a close...

Just want to piont out that Worms do like bannans so I would keep a eye out on what that council does.

Your goal to have the longest AAR by easter of 2050 seems easly attaniable. However you have been coveing a year in 2 post or so - and it just seems like its going at a breakneack speed now.

I second GreenPhrog. There is a good fact to take into consideration...

My portuguese AAR, although having started about two months after this one and being nearly 40 years ahead, has been "walking" lately much slower than your Brunei AAR. I wonder if I'm gonna complete mine by the easter!
