Chapter 10: Evers, 1509-1518, part 8
1517 dawned during one of the most horrific thunderstorms in recent memory. All the parties planned for this day were cancelled.
The storms were relentless. Day after day they continued.
On the 10th, a small fleet put to sea. On board was a young man named Pitalu and his family. They were planning on moving to Mindoro to the North and establishing a 5 and 10 in the wild land.
The saga of this small ship became famous in songs, handed down from generation to generation.
The legend lives on from the Sibuyan on down
Of the big sea they called South China Sea
The sea, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of January turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six hundred pounds more
Than the Binangonan weighed empty.
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of January came early.
The song continued in this way for a few more verses, but the message was clear. On the night of January 11, 1517, the ship went down in a terrible storm and all hands were lost.
After this disaster, Evers banned further attempts at colonies and 5 and 10 pending a full review. Instead, he ordered a full overhauling of the entire navy to try and avoid a repeat of the wreck of the Binangonan. This effort paid off in April when a reformation of the entire navy was overhauled.
Evers' spent the summer preparing for the next attempt. By late September, all was ready. The new and improved navy performed brilliantly. The merchants were delivered to Mindoro with no loss of life or material.
The new trading post was scheduled to open in early October. What Evers and the rest of the planners had not considered was the hate of the Koreans. They sent out a small death squad which set on the poor S'tinfi family in the middle of the night the day before the store was to open. When dawn came, there was nobody left alive in the small post!
Evers was crushed by this. He spent the rest of 1517 in consultaiton with his King. They had no answer for this kind of evil.
No answer at all.
On January 1, 1518, the dejected first advisor to the King was in in his office at dawn. He saw the ambassador from Mataram coming up the pathway. Evers stept out on the porch.
"Sir. If you say anything haughty to me I will see that your nation is crushed. Speak quickly and then be gone."
"M'Liege, many pardons. I know that my predecessor was rude and unbecoming of a gentlement to you and yor great nation. I know that the time is not right yet for our nations to heal this rift. I come to tell you that Bhre Pandan Solar has passed on. His memopry will not be revered in my nation for the harm he caused in relations with you and with other nations in the region.
Our new monarch is Pengeran Sabrang Lar. I do hope that time will heal the wounds."
These gracious words spoken, the ambassador turned and left.
Tink knew his time was short in Brunei. He spent most of the last year organizing a new colonial effort. His hard work climaxed on april 8 when Timorville was founded. It was a great day for Brunei!
