Your idea of sending baseball players as negotiators is certainly novel... Based on that ugly strike by the players a few years back (was it '94?), could you not have foreseen that those negotiations were bound to fail? :p

Luckily, proactive leadership by Evers saved the day... :)

Now if all you eat is banana, it might lose its taste. But if you had spices to add to the bananas...

Actually, based on the success of the players in exploding their salaries in the last 30 years, maybe we should have expected the negotiaters to have one several major provinces from Japan.

Chapter 10: Evers, 1509-1518, part 4

1512 began in a blaze of glory. Evers returned from his trip and organized a spectacular fireworks display. People from all over remembered it as a night to remember.

The next morning, Evers returned to his office. He cancelled all his appointments for weeks. He needed to reestablish control over the provinces.

For the next five months, the Number One advisor to the King began a slow trip from region to region. In each region, he fired incompetent mayors and forced out corrupt ones. My the beginning of June, he had managed to reestablish the governement's hold over the nation as a whole.

Evers returned to the capital on June 6, 1512. What he returned to was a mess of immense proportions.

Mataram had just sent a messenger to the capital.

"M'Lords. I have been given the great honor of delivering this message to our over-oppressive and arrogant neighbors. We no longer consider ourselves beholden to you. You are no longer welcome in our land. Any attempt to reestablish any control over us will be met by force until our last breath."

The King was so upset by this that he had retired to his chambers. The advisors were all buzzing. Talk of WAR was everywhere. Evers retired to his office and arranged for his advisors to report to hi one by one.

First to enter was the economic advisor.

"M'Liege. I advise WAR. We cannot stand this insult. The good name of our King has been slandered by these animals. We must retaliate."

"But, S'tine Kufafa, what is the state of the economics with Mataram?"

"M'Liege. Last year we collected 9 ducats in tribute."

"And what is your estimate of the cost to reimpose Brunie control?"

"M'Liege, money is not the reason to fight. But if you insist, we will spend several hundred to raise the troops and in lost revenue during the war."

Next to enter was the military advisor.

"M'Liege. We must attack the infidels. they must be taught to respect Brunei and our King. We have no choice."

"And what is your current report on the status of the RBI?"

"Our military is in peacetime mode. We currently have 20,061 infantrymen and 11,063 cavalrymen scattered across the nation. Our current training facilities can raise about 6,000 men a year."

Last to enter was the religious advisor.

"M'Liege. Alah has blessed us. We must avenge this sacreligious act. We must be the sword of Allah in this and sweep down on the Mataram countryside. Blessed be his name."

"And what does the Koran say of this? What do the religious leaders feel of this Holy War?"

"There is no bad act when it is done in His most Holy name."

Evers then sat back and pondered what to do.

The next day, another messenger ran into Evers' office.

"M'Liege. Word has just arrived from our ally. Atjeh has declared the alliance lapsed due."

Evers was besides himself. He immediately called for messengers. To the first, he said:

"Take this note to Mataram. Inform them that they are no longer our friend. they no longer can expect our aide. They no longer can expect our protection. May Allah protect them from the world because we will not."

"Take this note to Atjeh. Offer them to reform the alliance. We both need the protection of a mighty alliance. Go at once."

The note to Mataram had no immediate effect. On the other hand, the note to Atjeh did result in a reforming of the alliance.

1512 then dettled down a lot. Many of the royal marriages ended that year due to deaths in childbirth. The royal marriage with Manchu eneded and Evers saw o reason to tie Brunei to that failing nation. The royal marriage with Pegu eneded and the mutual dislike on both sides meant that no new marriage was even contemplated.

In August word arrived that the revolters in Kachin had broken away from Manchu and joined the mighty Chinese Empire.

Evers then decided to take some funds saved and establish a new colony. He sent the colonists off to the land of Tindore. They landed on a rocky beach on September 8, 1512. The colonists knelt and prayed to Allah for safety in this great endeaver.

Tindore was a great success!

1512 ended in a great success!

War against Mataram? Well... prepare yourself for Jihad! May the mighty, powerfull, holy and unbeatable RBI drive them back to the same place as Satan!

By the way, I advice you to be carefull... wanna know one thing? You'll like it...

The word mataram, in Portuguese, is the third person of the plural of the verb "to kill", or matar, in the past tence. Thus, in Portuguese, Mataram means "they killed".

:D :D :D :D

Well, what I tried to show was both sides. On the one hand is the emotional need to crush a nation that breaks vassalage with you. On the other hand, there is the cost involved -- expensive and costly to build up the forces needed to take them back.

Which way will Evers go?

Tune in for the next chapter.

Yes, going to war might be costly, but not going to war might be much costlier in the long run! Remember Munich 1938! Well, in as far as you can remember an event that will take place some 426 years in the future...

Your cause is just, your army strong! Go beat those ungrateful sods! Show those Mataramese who exactly will do the killing and who will do the being killed! :)

Well, Stuyvesant... Stroph has already played the whole campaign until 1820... There is no point on asking him to wage war. The best question is: did he went at war against Mataram?:D :D

Anyway... Stroph, keep on writing!

That is the question. I tried to lay down the rational for both sides. Emotionally war makes sense. Intellectially, it is not really worth an expensive war.

Chapter 10: Evers, 1509-1518, part 5

1513 began with the nation on the edge of war. Demonstrations broke out in many of the cities for or against war. The nation seethed with emotion.

Evers was of two minds. He was not sure a war with Mataram could be waged with the current state of the army. He was not sure he could avoid the war.

On January 11, Evers received a summons from King Bulkiah. He gathered up his notes and his estimates of troop size.

"Come, come, my favorite advisor. Tell me the truth. Can I win this war?"

"Sire. I cannot answer that without more information. I can tell you our troop dispositions and troop size. The RBI is in descent shape, but is a peacetime RBI."

Evers then summarized all the information he had received from his advisors.

"In summary, my best advice is to load up the first wave of 6,000 of our battle hardened RBI. Use them to scout out the enemy. If we find that they do not have enough to oppose our landing, then war will be declared and we will sweep ashore and take the field. If we find out that they are too strong for us to attack at this time, then the troops will sail back and no war is declared. We only declare if we can win."

King Bulkiah sat back in his throne. He thought about this advice for quite some time. He considered the implications and the political cost for and against war. He considered his nation and what a long war could do to it. He considered the inability of his nation to raise troops quickly.

He made his decision.

"Evers. This is my decision. We follow the Bulkiah plan as you outlined it. The decision to go to war is on your head. The responsibility for its outcome is on your shoulders."

Evers left his King with the heavy burden of decision on his shoulders. He had no choice but to prepare the RBI for war.

By the middle of March all was ready. He sailed the navy past the Mataram land. The fleet dropped anchor that night. Small scouting expeditions were sent to shore under the cover of night to scout out the opposition.

The scouts returned an hour before dawn.

"M'Liege, we have traveled all over the capital. We have noted all the troops’ dispositions that we could find. We have found that the Mataram army has about 18,000 effectives arrayed against us."

This news was devastating. There was no chance of a successful war against those odds. Using the power given him by his Monarch, Evers ordered the navy to sail on.

The course Evers sent for the fleet was the colony of Tindore. He felt that he should put the army in this colony and allow some of the men to settle there. He felt that would lesson the blow of the war that wasn't.

Evers' inspiration worked. The expansion of the colony of Tindore helped cushion the realization that there was to be no war against Mataram. By the end of the summer, the colony had increased by over 200 to its permanent population. It was a booming colony!

However, the non-war against Mataram did not come without a cost. As the citizens of Brunei realized that there was to be no war, riots broke out in many of the larger towns. While not threatening the stability of the government, the riots did cause a general feeling that Brunei was less stable that fall.

1513 passed quickly.

1514 was a quiet year. Stability returned to the land. A feeling of good will spread across the land. Evers took advantage of this to increase the enthusiasm for the military of the nation. This led to a burst of patriotism and a wealthy baron donated 5 warships to the nation and another raised a troop of mounted troops and donated them to the military.

This was followed by another burst of enthusiasm for Tindore as more men migrated there that year.

1514 ended.

Anibal, you're right. I actually knew that Stroph1 had played far ahead. Let's just say that my enthusiasm for the war (or should that be bloodlust?) got the better of me... Knowing what I know now (18,000 Mataramese troops), I know better...

So, prepare for a stunning 180 degree turn in opinion which shows I should run for office somewhere! :p

"Smart decision not going to war, Stroph1! Sometimes, NOT going to war requires more bravery than going into battle! It was the right thing to do!"

<ahem>

By the way, I still find it hard to believe, even though the evidence is there, that you managed to cover two whole years in just one post, Stroph1. :D

Smart decision not going to war,

Thanks you. And the way the story played out was actually how it happened in the game. When the vassalage was broken, we started building troops right away to retake them and sent the fleet to recon. When we saw that mob there we figured discretion was the better part of valor and backed off.

Oh well, it was Mataram's loss not to be part of the glory that will be Brunei....

I completly agree. May now Port-u-gail reconsider its positions and pay tribute to the mighty kingdom of Brunei!

They'll soon find the advantage of this!:D

Chapter 10: Evers, 1509-1518, part 6

1514 ended so boring that Evers slept passed New Years in 1515. He stayed groggy for quite some time after that.

On February 1, around noon, Evers' aide shook the advisor awake.

"M'Liege, M'Liege. Please wake up. Come, come. You must awake, sir."

A groggy Evers finally shook himself into some resemblance of awake and managed to try and focus through bleary eyes on his aide.

"Wha...wha...what is happening?"

"Our people have voted you most likely to sleep his life away!" (OOC: stability increased up to +3.)

In early March, a fast ship put into the docks. Three men from the colony of Tindore leapt ashore as the boat neared. When Evers saw them run up the path he felt a drop in the bottom of his stomach. They approached Evers....

"M'Liege, great news. Tindore has been declared a full city with full rights and full facilities!"

Evers couldn't help it. He broke out in song (based on music from an earlier song of Brunei)...

"Take me out to Tindore,
Take me out to the city.
Buy me some bananas and melon juice,
I don't care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the good guys,
If they don't beat Korea it is a shame.
For its one, two, three times
A full city on old Brunei!!

On March 15, a fast ship flying the flag of Port-u-gail put into port. A tall, haughty man emerged from the boat and made his slow way up to the palace where he demanded to see the King.

A short time late, King Bulkiah and Evers met the man in the throne room.

"King of this small island known as Brunei, listen to my words.

His Holiness Leo X has issued a Papal Bull granting half the world to Spain and half the world to us. I expect you to grant us your nation at this time. Please turn over the reigns of power by sundown."

With that the diplomat turned and left the stunned King of Brunei. You could have heard a pin drop in the chamber after he left. For about 9 minutes, Evers and the King sat there in shock.

Then the King began to laugh.

Tears running down his face, he turned to Evers and said simply

"Let them try!"

Only one other event of note happened that year. In October, word trickled into the capital that Pegu and Ayutthaya had formed a military alliance.

1515 ended....

Oh God... now the evil people of Port-u-gail is claiming your peacefull kingdom! No... I know that Evers won't bow to this arrogance! Neither shall the valiant and brave people of Brunei or even the mighty and powerfull RBI!

By the way... what is Spa-in?
