Poor old fellow. At least he got to finish his life with peace. Great post as usual, Stroph!

I am glad that chapter worked. I was worried about it because it was not a funny one like the other chapters. I tried writing a funny version but it didn't seem to work.

Chapter 7: Tink, 1479-1488, part 8

King Sulaymân died at the end of 1484. With him died the first glorious age of Brunei. There would be better times, but there would never again be the steady and fatherly hand of Sulaymân to guide his nation as they took the first steps to greatness.

Who was to rule now? There were seventeen sons of the late King who lived at this time. However, they were all well into late middle age. The nation did not need an old man. What Brunei needed was a young king with young ideas.

Tink met with the Council to help select the next King. Tink threw his weight behind a grandson of the late King who was a captain in the military. His name was Bulkiah. With the support of the King's favorite advisor, the Council gave the reigns of power to Bulkiah.

The ceremony on January 14 was an ornate affair. The Mullahs gave their approval in the elevation of Bulkiah by having the Iman himself perform the ceremony.

King Bulkiah had no intention of ruling from the capital. He was first and foremost a soldier. The day after he assumed the mantle of King, he called his commanders before him to perform a second ceremony. A short while later, General Bulkiah rode from the capital leading his officers behind him. His advisors also left the capital with the King. The Palace was left behind for a future king; this King ruled from the front!

The King read accounts of the colonization efforts in Selatan. He went before his people and called for volunteers to re-establish the town named Sulaytown. It was to be a memorial to the old king. Volunteers flooded the office and the new colony was established near the ruins of the old colony. It was a success!

In July, war broke out between China and Nippon against the evil Manchu. The King issued a declaration of support for the Chinese.

King Bulkiah then spent the rest of the year in intensive training with the RBI.

What is this? I do not get a chance to read the AAR for a week and all sorts of things happen! 3 post for one year? One post for 3 years (or some such thing - I was eating a banana and might be off a year). The King dies! A war! And hardly a word about bananas!

Killing of a reader like that, can not be good for your readership. He seems to have taken it rather well (being dead and all).

Okay, I'll leave the malarkey to you, Stroph1. :) Good luck with the upcoming war! Private S'tuyvesant (brother of the late S'tuyvesant) reporting for duty, sir! Though preferably at some cushy deskjob, sir! :p

Chapter 7: Tink, 1479-1488, part 9

1485 had been easy on Tink. His new King had spent most of it off on maneuvers with the RBI. On the day before the anniversary of the death of King Sulaymân, Tink left the capital. He went off to a small cabin a few miles from the capital.

That night, Tink climbed a small hill near his cabin. On top of the hill was a large field, bare of trees. There, the advisor to the King sat alone to welcome the New Year. He slowly sipped some rice wine and thought over his years with Sulaymân.

Dawn came early. 1486 came in very quiet on that lonely hill in the country. Tink awake several hours before dawn. He made his way back to his office and was sitting at his desk (aka rock) when the sun came over the horizon.

An advisor peeked his head into Tink's office and wanted to know if he would see the ambassador from Vientiane.

"Send him in, send him in. Greetings, H'ungTsi-ting, greetings. How are my old friends in the great land of Vientiane?"

"M'Liege, the King has passed. His son has been graced by Vishnu to lead us for years to come. The new king is named La Sene T'ai."

"Well, tell Las Enty that I wish him well and if he ever needs a favor, he has only to ask."

"M'Liege, I do have a favor to ask. My nation has been producing Chossa Dishu, known as CD's for short. We have found a way to make them using a new technique, know as bootlegging. We would like to work with you to make these CD's to barter for goods with China to the North."

"Sounds like a great idea." OOC: Monopoly Company formed.

The great CD scheme began almost at once. Unfortunately, the affair was an utter disaster on the Vientiane side. It was so bad, in fact, that Vientiane saw their entire economy collapse. Things fell so far that on February 16, the La Sene T'ai was forced to bend his knee to the King of Dai Viet.

So ended the marketing of CD's.

1486 passed. 1487 also moved swiftly.

In March, the Manchu signed a peace treaty with Nippon. In this treaty, they agreed to give Nippon the vast sum of their treasury for peace.

That day, the treasurer from Manchu gave the treasurer from Nippon a small sack.

With all of 36 gold.

For peace.

In August, the aborted marriage between Brunei and Pegu was consummated when Tink offered to send the Pegu king the same amount that Manchu was forced to give to Nippon.

On September 10, the Ambassador from China asked to see Tink. He was shown in at once with NO delay (this was China after all).

"Brunei advisor. I have no time for names. I come to announce that the Imperial throne has passed on to a new King. His name is Hongchi. All praise him."

Tink never said a word. However, he did go to see the King at once since any news from China was news of the utmost importance.

On November 1, the King arrived back in the capital. He had a grin on his face from ear to ear.

"Advisor, come celebrate with me. My hard work has paid off. I have discovered new technology for our mighty navy. Eat. Drink. Be merry."

Thus ended 1487.

OOC: Sorry for the slow years. Things are moving. The way this game was played between the two of us 10 years at a time had one side effect. We both tended to be less active for the last year or two of each ten-year period.

I know what you mean. In my AAR I start getting nervous in the last few years of a turn because I don't want to leave any messes behind.:D

Since you are consistently writing very detailed episodes on what you're doing (we are after all on page twelve and we're still in the fifteenth century :)), there are bound to be some 'slower' posts. It's not a problem. To me, they're a part of Brunei. :p They certainly convey the mood of Brunei as a place were life was not as hectic as it is nowadays, and that can only be a good thing. :)

Chapter 7: Tink, 1479-1488, part 10

Tink greeted the last year of his 10 year stint with a great party on New Year's Eve. It was a Who's Who of Asian leaders. Everybody was invited with very few exceptions. Of course, the Koreans and their friends were not invited, but that was assumed. They were not invited into civilized gatherings!

At a state breakfast the next morning, the ambassador to Assam asked to meet alone to the side with Tink. He had just received word that his King had died and the new ruler of Assam was Suhenphâ. Tink, who had known the former King of Assam, turned back to the main party. He stood up and asked for quiet.

"Friends, countrymen, neighbors. I stand before you to pay homage to a great friend of mine. King Susenphâ was a kind man, who worked with his friends and stood up to his enemies. I solute your memory, old friend."

The room was abuzz. This was a generous gesture and would be remembered.

After the meal, the ambassador from Ayutthaya stood up before the assembled nobles.

"Sire, I am a stranger to this fair land. I, too, have sad news. My King has passed away peacefully in his sleep. He has been succeeded by Boromorajat III. Long may he rule."

Tink immediately stood up. He looked out over the assembly.

"The nation of Brunei greets its new friend."

Moved, the ambassador sat down, a tear in his eyes.

Finally, the ambassador from Malacca asked to speak.

"Good sirs. I know that my nation has not always been on the best terms with yours. I know that several times it looked as though war would break out between our nations. I hope that the peace in this assembly today will live forever between our two nations. I would like to inform you that Mahmûd Shâh is now my King. I would ask you to respect his elevation to power."

Tink stood up a third time. He looked out over the assemblage of nobles. He raised his glass to his lips. He raised the glass up towards the ambassador from Malacca and tipped his glass to him and then sat down.

Tink knew that this was his last year for another decade. He spent most of this last year putting his affairs in order. More troops were raised and the military was in prime shape for whatever actions Evers would need to send them on.

In June, the royal marriage Brunei had with China ended in a tragic childbirth when the Aunt of the new Brunei king died giving birth in the Forbidden City. Tink himself went to the Chinese capital to attend the state funeral for the girl. While there, he arranged for a new marriage between the Brunei royal house and the house of the Emperor of Chin.

This was the final act of Tink's 10 years.

As darkness fell on the last day of the year, the advisor to the King took his dinner alone. He quietly left his house, locking the door behind him. He looked out over the capital and wondered what he would see when next he saw these fair avenues.

What would Evers and this new militaristic King do to Brunei?

Me too. I type it on the web site and then transfer the text to Word to spell check it and then reload it to the web site. It was word that crashed and I can't get it to start up again. I may have to reinstall Word.
