And We Conclude....
James Madison was one of the most important men in American history. The early part of his
Presidency started like any other; he established relations with the Navaho, he expanded the
Western frontier, and in general acted like any other president so far. Then, in 1812, talk of war
was on the horizon. Going against his party’s peace plank (like Jefferson before him), he decided
to enter an alliance with France.
As troops prepared to invade Canada, they got a tremendous surprise. They were not officially at
war with England. France had signed a peace treaty after England lost Quebec to rebels, and
therefore, America’s immediate concern was with the nation of Spain. A great movement from
North to south occurred, as America mobilized. Florida fell to American armies, and then they
marched into Mexico.
Quite a few soldiers were from New York, or Michigan, or New England, and they were
completely unsuited to the weather. Praying for snow, they slogged through Mexico. Most under
pressure like this would have folded, but not only were the Americans brave, they were
determined, and they fought like demons (though they had few Spanish opposing them). From
Chihuahua to Panama, fire reigned.
From this war spurted a patriotic anthem which was adopted as the national anthem, describing
the siege of Veracruz as Francis Scott Key say from one of Admiral Perry’s ships.
Oh, say can you see,
by the dawn’s early light,
what so proudly we hailed, at the twilight’s last gleaming,
whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the glorious fight,
‘Fore the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,
and the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
gave proof through the night,
that our flag was raised there,
Oh, say does that star spangled banner now wave,
O’er the land of the free,
O’er the city, of Veracruz.
Afterword
The war of 1812 resulted in the annexation of Texas, Florida, and the new State of Mexico.
America settled as a new world power. With Mexico and California revolting, and Quebec’s new
Republic, along with Canada’s becoming a semi independent commonwealth, the US was
surrounded by new nations. It stretched from sea to shining sea, and peace thrived on the
continent.
But would it always remain so...?
