I am a long time EU player. Some of you might even remember my AARs. Not likely. They weren't the best things in the world. Never mind the fact I never finished them. So, shortly after abandoning my last story (a bad update if there ever was one), a horrible thing happened. EU II was getting boring. So, I dusted off this CD saying Civ 3. Gave it a try. Was fun for a while, but I decided I would rather play EU 2. Starting a game, I had enough fun that I decided to write about it.

Nation: USA.
Version: Who knows? One of the betas, at least.
Scenario: Napoleon's Ambition, my favorite.
Difficulty/Agression: Normal/Normal.

A warning. This isn't a WC. I suppose if I really tried, I might be able to do one, but I find it much more fun roleplaying. So this will have some stupid wars declared out of spite, wars ended in humiliating faliure, the like. This is not a US wins all AAR.

This is The Blunders of America, Abridged.

Note: Author is going back to school. Author is not happy about this. Author is not in a good mood. :D

(I hope the lack of replies is anticipation, not disgust :) )

Prologue.

Greetings, reader! You are reading a book which will provide you with all of the real detailsof
America in the period from 1795 to 1819, an interesting period indeed. I have used only the best
of sources, and I will only quote when sure of my sources. This time period was a rich one, and
therefore, this book.

But I tire of these “Introductions” that I am stressing. On to the history, no?

Chapter 1: The end of the Washingtonian Era

America, 1795:
Black: State border
Red: Officially claimed by America
Yellow: Claimed by America but controlled by a hostile power
US1795.JPG

Note: The map incorrectly does not show New Jersey, and places the American capital in Dover,
when in reality it was in Philidelphia.

America at the end of the Washingtonian era was a troubled one. It was clearly the end of an era;
Washington was growing older, and the US was a relative backwater in the world, no longer
involved in international politics. There were only 14 states, as only Kentucky had been admitted
since the Revolution.* Washington realized he was too old to carry on, and he decided to lay
down his legacy. This would be easy for him, as he had the Congress in his pocket.**

So at the beginning of 1795, he asked congress for a declaration of war against the Iroquois. They
gave it to him, and America was at war.

The Iroquois War

The Iroquois war was the most successful and fastest of the Indian Wars.*** American troops
marched quickly, and immediately a province fell to the Congressional Army. The Continental
Army went straight for the chief’s village in Mohawk, and fought a battle with heros on both
sides.

4,000 Indians faced 14,000 Americans,**** and the braves fought a gallant battle that lasted
several days, but on the last day of the battle of Mohawk, Washington rode a brilliant white
charger, an American flag fluttering from a pole in his grasp, and the American cavalry charged
with him, sabers drawn. The Iroquois scattered, and it was said the clouds overhead formed into
an American flag, the sun shining through the stars and stripes, while another cloud in the shape
of a beaver disintegrated.

Americans took this to mean that God supported their struggle, that God wanted them to stretch
across the continent. “Manifest Destiny was born.

Editors Notes:
*Tennessee had some supporters for its own admittance, but it failed, as we shall soon see.
**For the most part, no one dared go against the hero of the Revolution.
***It lasted 4.5 months and gained far more territory than any other Indian war.
****Estimates of the Indians numbers range from 8,000 to 2,000, but 4,000 is the generally
agreed upon number that this chronicler used.

Looks interesting. American based AARs often appeal to me because I find it easy to root for or against popular national heros.

I also enjoy AARs that aren't always one victory after another.

Amazing, the burst of posts that appeared! Nice to know people are reading. :)

TreizeV: Indian wars, such as the great Dakota war, or "The most Idiotic War of Our time". :D

R.F.A: Thanks! :)

Machiavellian: Then you are in the right place. :)

calcsam2: Interesting, preempting something I don't know about.

Director: Once the Indians are pacified? How about if? As to the latter, Definately the latter, unless France would have refused Louisiana. Oh, and a nice quote in your sig, too. :)

Chapter 1, cont.

The Shawnee War.

After the Iroquois war, Washington, feeling confident, asked Congress for a declaration of war
against the Shawnee. Receiving this, he followed by prosecuting the most ridiculous of the Indian
Wars. Washington led the army, and indeed, he won battles, and captured the Shawnee capital,
but he was concerned far more for the American lives, and when the Shawnee burned a trading
post, he relented and offered them a white peace, which they gladly accepted, and Washinton
went home in disgrace.

He declared that “from hence forth, every year, August 20th shall be known as Remembrance day,
a day when we mourn our nation’s defeats.”

The aftermath of the Shawnee War

Washington was ruined after this war, and indeed, this may have been why he refused to run for a
third term. He had little prestige, and hence, he campaigned to regain it. He marched half of his
army into Kentucky*, and fought a successful battle against some troublesome natives (though
some attest that this was due more to the superior American muskets than to Washington’s
generalship.

He went into Miamis, which was an exact repeat of Kentucky, and the rest of the period was
merely economic improvement. Then, on November 5, 1796, John Adams was elected on his
promise to take a hard line to the Natives and to the revolutionaries in France. On March 5, he
was inaugurated, and became the first Federalist President.

Chapter II: The Presidency of John Adams.

John Adams had run against Thomas Jefferson, who was of a different party. Adams supported
(as a Federalist) Industrialization, Manifest destiny, and also a hard line against the natives.
Jefferson, as a Democratic Republican, supported the farmers and a soft line towards the natives.
He also wanted territorial growth, but by diplomacy, not war. The Electoral College supported
Adams, by just a few votes.

Adams, however, relented on his promises for a while, and did little in the way of foreign policy,
mostly strengthening America itself. Detroit had a boom in those years as a gateway to the West,
as did Louisville. American strategists under Adams discovered the secret of the French armies,
and put it into effectiveness throughout the army. In 1798, Adams asked Congress for a
declaration of war against the Cherokee, and it passed (barely).

He relied on his generals, and they took several cities from the Cherokee, until the Cherokee
relinquished claims on the Allegheny region,* which he added to North Carolina.

During the war, some people, unhappy with it, revolted, however, they were defeated. After the
war, a skilled general, Von Resslaner, came to a prominent command, and quikly became
Secretary of War.

In the aftermath of this war, Poor government policies were overshadowed by the acquisition of
Louisiana. This nearly doubled the size of the US. However, in the next election, his policies of
mostly ignoring the frontiers and also that of hating France (which many preferred over
England), and the unpopular Sedition Act.**

This led to the election of Thomas Jefferson (Democratic Republican) in 1800, and his
inauguration in 1801.
