The beta, the swastika and German law

Hi all, I played all the Wargame titles, and sunk ~3000 hours into them.

I watched a bunch of YouTube videos of SD44, and they all include the swastika. That is banned in Germany though (§86a StGB), and I remember Steam blocking some games in the past because of that. Is the Beta available for German players as well? Do we get a censored version?

I'm pretty sure Germany has a censored version with the swastika removed, Eugen just didn't want that compromise being made for regions where it wasn't necessary which I'm honestly quite grateful for.

Yes you get a censored version. Technically, everyone gets a censored version, and then there's a "German historical content pack" free DLC for non-Germans.

As well as the base game, Steel Division 'open beta' installs a 'German Historical Content Pack' DLC.

As I'm in the UK, I can't be certain but, perhaps the free DLC includes the flags and insignia banned in Germany, and is excluded from German installs/purchases ?

I'm thankful that they care about historical authenticity. It always bothered me when playing War Thunder that the german planes had some stupid cross on there. What's that supposed to be? It's like censoring history. Just because of strict censorship laws in a few countries. But the Hammer and Sickle is still everywhere, even though it's banned in lots of countries.

Yes you can. But you can also purchase and activate an international version of the game.

The #RFA# chat-flag contains a swastika in game for me (in Germany). Didn't really pay attention if it is seen anywhere else so far...

I imagine that'd be an oversight on Eugen's behalf, or it's possible that it's far harder to have two different versions of the flags like that due to the way they're displayed and not just being client side.

Yes, uninstall the free DLC "German Historical Content and all the symbols banned in germany will be replaced.

I'd actually like if the DLC was disabled by default. It's a subtle difference between opt-in and opt-out, and I'm sure some players would feel more comfortable playing the Axis without feeling like they were endorsing their politics, even in the most subtle and tangential way.

With the DLC, the 12.SS has the historical division emblem, and has a stylized "12" when disabled.
