There is a lot of focus on panzer in WWII and there are those who support the Tiger and others who support the t-34 as the candidat to the bedst tank... but after the second world war there has not been any prominent tanks or have ther? which tank is according to your oppinion the bedst tank after WW2???

The British Centurion which appeared just after the end of WW2 probably gets my vote for sheer flexibility and length of service across the world. Had it come into action earlier it might have been hailed as the best tank of WW2.

Cherny_Oriol_new_tank.jpg

MBT Chiorny Oriol (Black Eagle)

The newest Russian main battle tank. A mobility test-bed of a 21th century tank and is a result of radical upgrading of the T-80U MBT. The selection of the T-80U as a base for development of the 5th generation MBT derives from the fact that it is rightfully considered as the best MBT in the world which suc-cessfully combines all the basic per-formance characteristics: speed, maneuverability, fire power and protec-tion system. The Chiorny Oriol has the same overall dimensions as the T-80U does, nevertheless it has a lower silhouette which makes it less distinctive on the terrain. The experts believe that in terms of combination of the basic charac-teristics such as maneuverability, fire power, armour piercing capability and protection this MBT will surpass the Western MBTs such as M1A2 Abrams, Leclerk and Leopard-2 by a factor of 1.5-1.7.

Ye Olde Question on this board. :D

Last time we reached the conclusion, that no modern MBT can be classified as "the best", they all have their strength and weaknesses depending on the circumstances.

If you judge the "bestness" of a post-WW2 tank by its length of service and how it has worked in combat, the Centurion is a very good bet.

Best tank is a hard thing to classify. In terms of importance, I have to give a three-way tie to the T-55, T-60, and T-72 for being exported and copied, and their influence in many conflicts.

For longevity, arguments could be made for the Centurion, Sherman (with Israel mainly), and T-34's (served in Angola in the 80's).

As for best right now, I have to say the M1a2 Abrams, followed closely by the Leopard 2a5 and Callenger III. The other "Western" tanks follow closely behind, with the T-80 series in the middle.

When you start looking next-generation, I say don't bother, who knows what who is cooking up? What flaw or strength might not reveal itself until tested in battle?

Chieftain. Waaaayyy ahead of the rest in its time.

As of today, the latest versions of the main Western tanks are pretty much equivalent as far as a civvy can tell.

Does anyone have an idea of their costs? could be interesting.

It's bizarre isn't it? How the British were fannying around with second rate tanks all through WW2 and then suddenly played such an absolute blinder. Whoda thunk it.

How about the WORST post-WWII for a change?

what was the name of that 50's US tin can with 6 recoilless guns you had to get out of the (tank?) to reload?

Designed for the Army and only the Marines got to actually use it, usually objective proof that a particular piece of hardware is crap.

best/worst

The best IMO is strv 122 (swedish leo2a5 improved)
The worst it has to be strv 74, they took strv 42 and changed the turret, tracks and engine, it was built in the 60:s...

I heard the Russians have a really cool reconaissance tank coated in rubber which runs very quietly, is it in production or just a prototype?

Some thoughts on crap equipment:

The Soviet T-10 and T-10m - slightly modified JS-III's, that continued faaar to long in service.

The French AMX-30 that basically a so-so gun on a paper chassis.

Regards,

EoE

BTW: I'll still maintain that neither the Abrahms M-1, the Challenger 2, the Leopard 2, the Merkava, the Leclerc, the T-90 or that Indian or Japanese MBT is THE BEST. It so much depends on circumstances, and the individual versions. Take the Leo 2 as an example. There's a world in difference between the A1 and A5 version.

I wrote LATEST versions, meaning with so-called hunter-killer targetting system among other things.

I don't agree with you about the T-10: when it was introduced, it was pretty decent. That it was kept in service too long wasn't the fault of the guys who designed it.

AMX-30: its main problem was its design philosophy was that of a light tank and it was designated as an MBT. The same was true of the Leopard 1, but the Germans had the sense to design a real MBT right on its heels.
