I have completed the theme system as Byzantium but I haven't got the achievement. It's in ironman mode too, starting in the first starting date. Could it be a bug or am I missing something here?

Restore the theme system to get the achievement. But the listed rewards are all that happens. No name change or claims or anything, it's not a formable nation.

It'd be good to know if it's working, I was struggling a lot as Byzantium, but now I'm doing okay in 1472 - driving the Ottomans out of Europe, soon restoring it to its full glory!

In addition to the obvious (Greece and Anatolia) you also need to own Kaffa; I think this is exactly equivalent to owning every Greek and Turkish province in Europe and Asia.

Great, thanks! Kaffa is the only province I've got left to conquer to get the achievement then :)

Lucky you! I got Kaffa but I am missing Anatolia. And my lands are sowed with discontents, there are revolts everywhere and I fear for my life with every step I take in this kingdom of ruins and death that I built. Long way to go, it's quite a change from Eu3 :)

How are you finding the adaption process to the differences? I love it tbh, love the new challenges!

For anyone still reading this: It is SO important that you occupy Epirus and Albania before the Ottomans can change the religion into Sunni, which is what they attempt to do for both those regions. The other reasons you can leave to the patriots, just not those two.

Edit: Another tip - so that you don't get owned by Europe while you conquer Anatolia: In your first war against the Ottomans there will be Bulgarian Patriot rebels, do NOT attack any of their provinces (Sofia, Tarnovo, Burgas, Silistria) let them take these provinces and form Bulgaria. Once you are done with the Ottomans vassilize Bulgaria, as Bulgaria will build a buffer zone between you and Poland+Hungary. Ignore Serbia

I made the big mistake of waiting for patriots to take over all the regions (which is great due to the free provinces you get) - however the Sunni rebels really screwed me over in the long run, since I was unable to convert the provinces that early on. If you get them early, you will keep at 100% religious unity and conquer Europe and Anatolia alike.

In my second attempt the Georgian provinces defected to me, so I got a huge bunch of overextension which I couldn't get rid of due to the constant revolts in the region and my war with the Ottomans. If any of my provinces would've had a different religion I would've been done for. I used the georgian foothold to conquer my way into the Ottoman territory basically. Really cool so far :)

--- Slightly slower -- i.e. harder, you can't just stomp everyone anymore and just push a few sliders to get full stability back. It's been balanced a lot more, so the cookie cutter stuff doesn't work. I really like it, but I have yet to attempt to travel the path of The Three Mountains ^^

I think the keys to Byzantium and restoreing the entireity of the west and east roman empire is the following according to me:

1. Max out naval ideas and SLOWLY take back the greek provinces. The ottomans are only strong initially, when you have secured the greek provinces and got fleet superiority they are fucked.
2. DO NOT take any turkish/muslim provinces until you have full religious ideas.
3. DO NOT expand into the balkans early. Leave this for when you are done with the Ottomans and the mameluks. Once you have annexed the ottomans and destoryed the mameluks aswell as integrated their rich mediterrainian provinces, you have secured your south front. The mameluks will be sufficiantly weakend that other muslim and/or tribal nations will keep them busy. The idea is that if you expand on two fronts, you will get the ire of several nations and nasty coalitions, even if you do beat the coalitions it becomes a slow and costly endevour.

Once you have this secured you will have a very solid empire, you will have few strong natural enemies. Russia is probably busy in central/northern europe. Spain/portogal could be an issue. Venice is most likely not strong enough even if they have expanded in the balkans/italy. Your fleet should be stronger due to forcelimits and full naval, and your army should without a shadow of a doubt be stronger.

Tech's I have picked so far is:

Naval
Quality
Religious
Trade
Offensive

Sidenote is I have allowed turks to be a allowed culture in the Empire. I reckon they are the one culture you should not convert. All the rest should be Converterted, cored and assimilated into the greek culture. This will make or break you, if you expand to rapidly (which is very easy), you either have lag behind in tech or implode from rebells.

Valei, or anyone else - did you get the Steam Achievement? It seems like it's bugged. I am still conquering and coring more provinces, but I have all the necessary ones from what I know. Bulgaria / Balkans aren't needed right? I took back all Byzantian cores + Kaffa ... and used all the events yet no achievement.

On a sidenote ... I agree with Naval, I disagree with Quality and Religious. (Religious later one, not as a 3rd choice - I would take it whenever you plan to westernize, but I find I am at a better position without Westernization) - The early morale boost from Defensive just tops any other military idea. And I take Diplomatic for faster expansion at less cost, instead of Religious. What year are you in? Because I have expanded a lot, bordering Persia and Moscow as only big enemies.

Also there is a really good youtube video on how to beat the Ottomans, rushing galleys with loans, the Ottomans stand no chance, after the Ottomans expand into Crimea and then into the Mamluks. Whilst simultaneously (during peace treaties) expanding into Italy, as it is too far away from all the other western nations for the expansion penalty to cause them to declare wars on you or join coalitions. I'm expanding into Italy slowly though, the Middle East is the main focus, as you have strong enemies there that have to be kept at bay. I will probably get religious as a 4th Idea, just to keep up with my expansion. I really like the Byzantine ideas, basically if you play it right, the only revolting countries will be those that you didn't convert yet to Orthodox.

Also I used to convert every single culture in my first few games of EU4, now I do not convert anything anymore, unless they cost nothing - like Albania. I found that you do need the diplomatic power reserve for getting rid of war exhaustion if you expand too keenly, especially needed at the start before you get a strong army and a foothold. On hindsight, I could've used the diplo power to convert culture, and thus gain a natural disadvantage in diplo technology to westernize. I am not planning on westernizing, and I wanted to keep up with diplo to keep the strongest navy. Having the strongest navy will make the game for you. It's the only way you can stop Spain from invading you come 1550-1600.

Regards,
Sir Rogers

I got the achivement, I am not a 100% sure but I think you need kafka + the provinces neaded to form "The Theme system"

I will have to try out defensive in some game :) I am currently at 1722, and In this game Spain/portugal is king. France is almost wiped out and I am trying to help them out. The first war we lost, the second we were winning but the french AI made a terrible peacedeal. Once the ttruce is off, I will declare on spain and try to restore France. The empire now stretches from Roma in the north, through the Balkans and Bulgaria in the east. In the south we control all of the seabound provinces of the mameluks aswell as damascus.

I am not westernizeing either, to late for that I reckon.

I still haven't got the achievement for some reason. It's right now in the early 1600s and my empire streches from austria, into persian lands and south to Mecka. I own Kaffa and as I said, I have done the Theme system thingy. I really hope it isn't a bug because I want the achievement :)

I'm fully westernized and all but 2 or 3 of my provinces are orthodox. I haven't touched the religious ideas, instead I've focused on diplomatic, trade, offensive ones.

Thank you so much. I guess the problem is that I still got Bulgaria as a vassal, time to annex :)

Currently in 1625, I have taken Roma, I'm in the process of coring and then converting. The Pentarchy will be restored under my reign!

I cannot wait to see what happens :)

Edit: Actually I'm thinking of westernizing, it got bugged in my other games, but I got the required lack of technology, and the stability. I think it could work out well!

Edit2: I can confirm I got the achievement. New tip: DONT ever westernize as Byzantium, really ... it just ruined my game. Well I could still play but it's no fun, rebels everywhere, administrative power going up way to slow. By the time I'm done westernizing I will have spent a hundred years doing it. Just a tip for everyone, I guess it'll be worth it for cultures that have more than a 20% penalty on technology.

1. Thanks for the information about the provinces. All I needed to do was to diplo annex my vassel bulgaria and I got the achievement :)

2. How I managed to survice as Byzantium? I just did exactly what was adviced in the Byzantium AAR that you can find here on the forum. Worked on the first try :) To make a long story short it involved building alot of light ships and waiting for Greek rebels to spawn west of Constantinopel ;) I also relesed bulgaria as a vassal but as I said, you can read more about that in the AAR.

3. The westernization was a bit of a hazzle for me too. I didn't know the importance of a good adm ruler (not that it would have helped me to wait for a better one since al my rulers have been crap) but I had saved up alot of ducats and turned most of my provinces into orthodoxy. Didn't have alot of problems by rebels. The whole process took 28 years, don't know if that is good or bad.
