With the latest coverage of Italy, an average forumite has one thought in the aftermath: Balkans are coming. Which is why the alliance between myself, @Sanguine Caesar, @Mingmung and @Dieselface brought you our concensus on how the Balkans should preferrably look in the future. We had some very fruitful debates, agreements, and i think each of us is happy with the product. Do have in mind that our work is not yet 100% finished, so the subsequent updates will be mentioned using the allmighty Threadmark option.
1444 was a year of great turmoil in the Balkans. Crusade of Varna left much of the region devastated, and the fractured Balkan monarchies were left weak to mount resistance against the Ottoman Empire alone.
Risen from the disintegrating remains of both the Byzantine Empire and the Second Bulgarian Empire, the Ottomans control the lands between the Aegean Sea and the Danube River. After the heavy blows dealt by the armies of Timur, the nucleus of Ottoman power now lays in Rumelia instead of Anatolia. Increased centralization has been made possible largely due to the efforts of the infamous Janissary corps, probably the first standing army in Europe.
The Sultan rules from the city of Edirne, one of the first cities in Thrace to fall to the Turks after they captured Gallipoli in 1354. The rest of the Eastern Balkans quickly followed; from the old capital of the Bulgarian empire, Tarnovo, to the capital of the Serbian Empire, Skopje. Now, with the defeat of the crusader army at Varna, the rest of the Balkans lay wide open.
The fertile valleys of the Danube and the Maritsa supply the regional markets with wheat, fruit, cheese and tallow while the mountains in Macedonia are rich in copper and iron. Migrations and forced relocations have resulted in an ethnically diverse countryside. Tribes from Anatolia have largely settled on the frontier or in depopulated areas, serving as auxiliary troops when necessary. The Dobruja above Varna and Silistra is one such frontier; bordering the great plains to the east and the Danube-delta. Raw skins and wool produced by the Turcoman pastoralists finds its way to Edirne and other Bulgarian towns where the leather industry flourishes.
Old frontiers like the areas around Sofia, Plovdiv and Vidin are seeing an increase in the amount of Turkish peasants and are slowly turning into commercial centres. Cotton textiles, spices and silk find their way to the European markets in the north while fine woollen cloth and iron tools, Styrian knives in particular, are imported to the Ottoman markets in the south.
Because of the treaty of Gallipoli signed in 1403, the Byzantine Empire still retains control over a few coastal towns and strongholds, the most prominent of which are Sozopol, Nesebar and Pomorie. The latter would hold a saltworks during the Ottoman times to come.
Though the entire Serbian Despotate was restored in the aftermath of Varna, the heavy fighting it saw during the five-year war devastated much of the countryside, making the Despotate too weak to attempt to quickly regain holdings that were conquered by Bosnia and Venice. The restoration of the Despotate wasn't anticipated by Bosnia, which is now suffering internal issues of it's own. A powerful Bosnian vassal, the Duke of Herzegovina and Hum, denies Stjepan Kotromanić's legitimacy, now actively seeking an alliance with the Serbian Despot against the Bosnian King.
The ever-opportunistic merchants of the prosperous Republic of Ragusa are also seeking to exert their influence over the area, seeking cooperation with both the Hungarians and the Turks in order to achieve it. They hope to gain an edge over their longtime rivals in Venice, who continue to choke the area of vital trade through their control of Skadar and the Bay of Kotor, forcing nearby states to increasingly turn towards the Magyars and Germans. For Serbia, though it still possesses respectable armies in Šumadija and Toplica areas, Kosovo and the Morava valley lie open to potential Ottoman aggression.
To the west, the Slovene lands remain firmly within the grip of German and Austrian influence. The germanised Counts of Gorizia with their capital in Lienz have lost much of their holdings to the Habsburgs and Venetians, while the County of Cilli remains a nominal Styrian vassal under the leadership of the legendary Ulrik II. The major trading ports of Trieste and Rijeka remain under Austrian control, despite being hungrily eyed by Venice, who have managed to assert their control over the Istrian coast.
Croatia remains in union with the Hungarian Crown, having lost its Dalmatian holdings to the Serenissima in 1420. The realm has entered into a state of general decline, yearning to once more reclaim the glorious days of King Dmitar Zvonimir. Their Magyar overlords meanwhile, have also set their sights on Bosnia, seeking a buffer-state against the ever-expanding Ottomans.

Skanderbeg, supported by people of all ethnicities in the region, starts a decades long rebellion against his former suzerain, the Ottoman Empire, which by now established direct control over former territories of Lordship of Prilep and Velbazhd, gaining a strong staging ground for further conquest into Southern Greece, Albania, and Serbia. Can Skanderbeg and Branković overcome their feud and unite with the Hungarians for a greater cause?
Byzantine-Greek holdings in the Aegean and Southern Greece suffer from big uncertainties ahead. With several island nations, such as Naxos and Lesbos, all working for their own interest, this region's future is impossible to predict, as Republics of Venice and Genoa, as well as the Knights of Rhodes, all aim to expand their influence and strategic utility in the Aegean.
On the Peloponnese, several Byzantine holdings stand firm, though local authorities of Despotate of Morea, seated in Mystras, gain more ground as Byzantium's successor, with Kōnstantinoúpolis outmatched without outside help from the impending Ottoman attack. After decades of infighting between Greeks, Serbs, Albanians, and Ottomans, Despotate of Epirus was united by the house of Tocco of Kefalonia, but is now steadily losing ground to the Ottoman Empire, losing Ioannina in 1430.
The kingdom of Cyprus, dominated in the 14th century by the Genoese merchants, hoped that the French would be able to help against the Italians, therefore they sided with the Avignon Papacy in the Great Schism. The Mamluks then made the kingdom a tributary state in 1426. Can the succeeding monarchs of Cyprus regain their independence against the interest of the most powerful trade powers in the Mediterranean, only time will tell.

Putting this thread together was a long process, and though we didn't yet finish everything, we were methodical in every change we made. In the following days, expect to see all NI sets having descriptions, and we will post a full spreadsheet of all provinces in the region, with their development, and more specific province info, as well as hundreds of dynamic names, etc.

Thanks for giving props for Serbian missions. You can argue there's too many conquest-missions, but i thought they are most fitting for this game's starting date. The problem that i have with my MT is that building a fort lasts for 2 years, and that mission shouldn't be the prerequisite for allying Herzegovina and other missions. Conquering Albania however wasn't something Branković looked that forward to given the military skill of Skanderbeg, and the fact that Skanderbeg was allied to Hungary, and protected by Venice. But yeah, all these can be rearranged for the better gameplay, it's the base idea that matters here
