I've only just noticed this because I just started up CK II to try a Muslim dynasty now that I own SoI, and because Kurdish culture had been added in 1.06 I just assumed the Ayyubids would already have been changed.

You can of course read a summary on the Internet (such as Wikipedia) but the Ayyubid dynasty should be Kurdish and not Levantine, and in fact their dynasty is specified as being Maghreb:

Code:
24000 = {
	name="Ayyubid"
	culture = maghreb_arabic
}

So that should really be:

Code:
24000 = {
	name="Ayyubid"
	culture = kurdish
}

At the moment it seems that various members of the Ayyubid dynasty are spread across kurdish.txt, turkish.txt, maghreb_arabic.txt, egyptian_arabic.txt and levantine_arabic.txt -- remember that Saladin himself was a Kurd and always known as such, and he is considered the founder of the dynasty.

At the very least this would bulk up the number of Kurdish characters somewhat, and moreover I don't think it's fair to wrongly portray such a famous and iconic character from the CK II period as an Arab.

I find it reasonable that the Ayyubid family is spread out over various culture files. Ibn Khaldun gives Saladin a really mixed family, calling them Yemenese Kurds (IRC). Just looking at their names suggests that dividing the family among various cultures might make sense. (His brothers were apparently called Tacülmülk Böri, Seyfü'l-Islam Tugtekin, Turanshah, Melikü’l Adil Ebu Bekir and Shahinshah (the spelling may vary, depending on how you transcribe from the Arabic! :)))

Maghreb-arabic, however, is, I think, wrong. :) Levantine, maybe.

It could also be an attempt to prevent negative relations with his in-game vassals. (If he's got Egypt)

Just my tuppenyworth.

The culture if a dynasty has no effectl, it only is used to give randomly generated courtiers of a certain culture a dynastic name.

The Ayyubids characters culture is determiNd mostly by gameplay. F.e Salah-ed-din did't have much oroblems controlling Egypt once he had depoused the Fatamids.

Fair enough I guess, I was just pointing it out because it seems strange that Saladin should be an Arab now that we actually have Kurdish culture. Before 1.06 it sort of made sense on the basis that he'd probably be classed as nearer Arab than Persian culture (as we'd have had to choose between those two) but post-1.06 I do think the Ayyubids ought to be Kurdish.

I take your point about ruling over Egyptians, though I'm not an expert so I can't really comment on how easy a time he had in terms of rebellions.
