Unless you edit the save, natives never get cavalry, no matter what the tech says.

Oh yeah, that too. So they get crap cavalry they can't even build.

I dunno what happens really, as natives should be getting cavalry units (The units actually exist) but they just can't recruit them =/
If you don't have a preferred cavalry unit listed in the save, the game never lets you switch it.

For whatever reason, when new world (or african) tech groups reach the tech level where they can get cavalry, the game doesn't automatically give them a preferred cavalry unit (which it should).

If you edit the save to add the preferred cavalry unit, it works fine from that point forward.

something like
Code:
    cavalry="eastern_knights"

Yeah, even better.

FEEDBACK

Apologies all for the slow update pace at the moment. I've got a nasty cold which as left me exhausted, particularly since I'm still going to work - I think I've mentioned previously that my employer has been trimming headcount...

demokratickid - I've checked you're offline before posting this update ;)

comagoosie - France and GB combined probably just means bigger meals for Burgundy

rapidem - I know the prospect of being ruled by Paris really is shocking - what if they demand we learn how to cook properly :rofl:
Of course if we get to trade Harriet Harman for Rachida Dati it ain't all bad.

Babington-Smyth - The cost of a single Irish backwater is the same as five or six caribbean provinces so I'll need a spectacular victory to get a really impressive peace deal.

Cyrus_The_Great - Like many Americans we've gone to Ireland to look for our roots, what's wrong with that?

TheExecuter - Of course Ireland is Europe, they've got the Euro.

EUROO7  Did you read that thread on things this game has taught you?

Isanova - I can't force GB to release Ireland only the four independant OPMs. Vassals are not a possibility I intend to explore. I have approx -14 to annual relations because of my reputation so I won't be able to keep them in line.

demokratickid - Ireland is part of Europe but Britain isn't. Europe is a state of mind not a Geographical entity ;)

Sarganto - Good answer, they've surrendered

coz1 - I'm hoping war in Europe will prove quite interesting

Puritan - Invading Ireland is one thing, winning it at the peace table might prove a different matter...

Lord Strange - I was rather amused to see the Ottos annex Austria - I played a lot of EU2 where it didn't matter what happened some event would come along and hey presto here's BWB Austria again.

RedFish - It's a good question, Atlantis? After all the Man from Atlantis was Patrick Duffy ;)

FYROM - I quite like the modernised Hordes; stops that whole Uber Russia/Lithuania thing.

Derdiedas - The big players in Europe are Bohemia, Burgundy and the Ottoman Empire. Burgundy usually wins against France and I 'd expect Burgundy to eventually absorb France if there isn't outside intervention.

Icekommander - I'm glad someone spotted the Eddings reference - Castile is my Mallorea but yes I suppose you're right that the Timmies are prolly a better candidate overall.

naggy - Indians have colonised my bit of Europe - Leicester is projected to be the first English city to be 50% non white - within a couple of years. This is a great city for a curry

Griffin.Gen - Thank you! I was only aiming to survive to 1821 simply to show it could be done - as I'd already shown for Maya. All the successful warmongering is mildly crazy :)

aldriq - I did have a little chuckle when I read your suggestion and saw the Austrian annexation in the event log.

Lord Strange - Thank you for the cookie! If this is something I can put in my signature could you PM instructions please.

Emperor_krk - The problem with taking a single province in europe is that as soon as I lose a siege then the enemy can annex the province as I'm a pagan. I really need a group of provinces so that I have room to manouvre and replenish units - I'd quite like all of Irealand but that's 70+ war score.

Cliffracer RIP - :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Sarganto - Exactly, if I wanted to demonstrate failure I'd simply recommend asking cute girls for dates ;)

Vladislav - Interesting question, I don't know although I don't see why not provided I survived first contact.

Enewald - It'll be worse if it happens!

Stingray - I'm actualy building small numbers of cavalry as part of my 'New Model Army' formations - 3 regiments of Gallop cavalry and 12 of Gustavian infantry. I tend towards infantry heavy armies as I do a lot of assaulting fortresses if there is an opportunity.

The Norwegian units are rather better than the British ones so I'm building in Norwegian cores.

naggy - I think Stingray is asking why aren't I building more cavalry in my European cores. You're right Native American cavalry aren't great and take ages to arrive - that doesn't make a lot of sense. LT 5 would be fine to ensure that the AI didn't manage it without westernising - which it won't and LT5 is simple for a player who does westernise.

ulmont - Sadly true as I demonstrated in a screenie when the relevant tech level fired.

ComteDartois - Cheers!

Athe - I *know* my Iroquois are waiting for Harleys

HannibalBarca - with Guiness for small change?

naggy - Agreed it's not great - American natives really should get cavalry and based on European expansion, nothing else.

ulmont - So essentially it's a bug or as we used to call it when I tested software, a non design feature.

Update to follow (unless demokractickid sneaks in first)

Chapter Twenty One
Sea lions are go!

April 1702

EU3_125.jpg

A major naval victory over Great Britain but at a great cost. That’s most of my strike fleet gone; a significant build programme has just been started as I can now build Two Deckers.

Peace with Norway - October 1702

EU3_126.jpg

This now gives me new borders with France and Denmark. There was potential to develop a border with Castile but I skipped out on that while I don’t have a war fleet.

BB 33.05 / 14.00

By the end of 1702 Ireland is under Iroquois control but Great Britain is no nearer agreeing to peace

Denmark declares war - February 1703

EU3_127.jpg

In the background troops can be seen boarding ship for attacks on the UK mainland while the much reduced (17 War Galleons) main fleet hunts a rebuilt British squadron (9 War Galleons). This naval encounter will be a clear victory eight British ships sank, the last one captured.

01/03/1703 Portugal warns Iroquois. Would this be an example of History repeating itself as farce?

By July 1703 Iroquois forces in Greenland have been defeated. The deployment of the remaining Iroquois war fleet to Irish waters has given the Danes considerable freedom. I’m hoping that the first few Two Deckers can be used to change that.

Portugal declares war - 19 July 1703

EU3_128.jpg

I need those new ships…

I was hoping for an overwhelming victory against Great Britain and that looks reasonably possible as their casualties mount but these new DOWs complicate matters. The difference between overwhelming victory over GB and a clear victory is basically that I can take Ireland – it costs 70 points of war score while the American possessions I’m interested in cost about 20.

Greenland is Danish - September 1704

EU3_129.jpg

I’m not really concerned as I’m far more interested in Denmark’s Caribbean colonies and sinking their fleet

Portugal has essentially been ignored apart from the occupation of Honduras.

Great Britain is struggling war score is around +50 with steadily growing war exhaustion. I’m using the two armies in Ireland to take turns landing in Scotland and Southern England. British forces are marching up and down the country to no great effect while isolated regiments are destroyed and provinces stormed. GB has level 1 fortresses everywhere apart from London.

12/01/1705 Nunavik converts

The conversion strategy is currently to target provinces in North America that have rebel control forces (21 regiments of Iroquois infantry) normally stationed there.

Peace with Portugal - September 1705

EU3_130.jpg

I’ve taken the last Portuguese province in Mexico and two more Caribbean islands. Also forced the release of two province Brandenburg mainly as a way of weakening Portugal further. Notice the army stood in Lisbon? It was one of the ones used in the raids on England I decided to try and end the other wars to make Great Britain more likely to want to make peace. If you move from having several opponents to only having one the AI will reassess the situation and may prove less stubborn.

Virtually all the trade in Honduras (worth 178 ducats) is from provinces I intend to take in these wars; I destroy the COT knowing the trade will mainly shift to Iroquois Havana.

Naval Superiority re-established over Great British - January 1706

EU3_131.jpg

The 12 ships sank is the rebuilt British war fleet – Britain spawns ships at a frightening rate, they’ve also built a dozen or so transports in the last three years.

AI fleets tend to hide in port when they are outnumbered. Drawing AI fleets from port is not easy but a working tactic is to split your warships from your transports and use the transports as bait. I stationed my transport fleet (4 war galleons and 20 merchantmen) in the Irish Sea where they could easily withdraw to Iroquois controlled Ulster. The 18 war galleon strong galleon fleet was positioned a sea zone south. The British war ships harboured in heavily defended southern England sailed around Scotland and attacked my transports. As soon as I saw them coming I sent my war fleet north to the rescue – timed to arrive after the Brits had engaged. As soon as the warships engaged the transport fleet fled to port having taken and inflicted minor damage. My larger, well led and undamaged fleet won a significant victory. Notice how much war exhaustion the defeat has cost GB.

Iroquois declares war on Zapotec - 01/05/1706

This is simply tidying up – I’ll see how much money they have before deciding to annex.

June sees peace with Zapotec for 2350 ducats and their remaining cores. Not quite 100 war score so their treasury is now empty and I can annex next time around. I use the money for a textile manufactory in the wool producing province of Mescalero.

With Britain’s navy out of action and Denmark engaged in a land war with a France/Sweden/Portugal alliance I decide to try a landing on Mainland Europe. Bremen is a COT so I’m hoping its loss will make Denmark willing to part with their Caribbean islands. I’ll make heavy use of spies to hasten the siege.

The Siege of Bremen

EU3_132.jpg

Notice one of the side effects of playing on very hard – Europe is absolutely covered in Manufactories and COTs as the AI has the money available.

Peace with Denmark - September 1706

EU3_133.jpg

Denmark accepts this deal. I can now concentrate on beating Great Britain.

01/01/1707 British Isles

EU3_134.jpg

I’m heavily outnumbered as all the British forces are in shot while I only have 27000 troops in theatre. However I’m doing pretty well at confusing the AI – Britain’s armies are in near constant motion and there are some attrition casualties especially when I drag the main stack through the Scottish winter.

To be continued…

The Western Isles are the official British Army Wintering Ground if you can take it, let them across, and trap them. :)

Man, I got a kick from seeing those Iroquois in Bremen. That's great! Nice work with silly Denmark and Portugal. GB seems the harder nut to crack for the war gains you really want. Hopefully time will tell the difference. I noticed France did not take the opportunity to war with you. Once they get out of this other war, I suspect they may come knocking.

you award a Lord Strange Cookies of British Awesomeness for an AAR where the Brits get badly beaten by the Iroquis? :p

As far as I can see I'm the only person to win one for anything remotely British.
Oh well, that's good for me.
I bet I'm horribly wrong and someone's going to point out that someone else has won one for something awesomely British and then I'm going to look like a dick. Sorry in advance.

Oh and there is not a smiley with it's jaw dropping far enough to show my feelings about this AAR.
Simply awesome.
