Introduction by the Editor

I worked for many years for various organisations translating some rather esoteric and perhaps seemingly dull Arabic texts. I was sent this one with a large cheque from a wealthy Egyptian benefactor I had worked for previously. He was highly interested in History generally and fascinated with that of the Near East and North Africa. I translated the text and made several copies as is usual. It amazed me and I saught his permission to publish this text. I have now discussed how I got this stunning text I will now detail what this text is.

The Assembled Journals of the El Khadir Family or Annotated History of Cyrenaica.

It seems uninteresting at this point but let me detail this family.

El Khadir is a common name throughout what was once Cyrenaica. This particular family are Byzantine by origin. They originated in Northern (Modern-day) Turkey. They moved south to Damascus and from there to Benghazi. They were typical traders of the time and their wealth increased as Venetian trade with Cyrenaican wool went up. They had niche. By the 1350s this wealth elevated them to a status quite unique they financed the entire Cyrenaican army while the Sultan bankrupted his nation on a large Mosque. By the earliest document we have from this family (1490) they were the Chief Ministers of State and all but ran the country.

This text is the memoirs of one family but also the politcal life of a nation and the nation itself. They - in this text - seem to embody the nation that they ruled not with real titles but with wealth and influence. The first two years are unfortunately filled with ineligible sections and thus I must start the full text at around January 1492.

So now I have rambled enough and I hand over to the more intelligent hand of Ali E Khadir (You note that early members of this family do not have El, merely E).

Ok this is my first AAR so please be gentle :)

Chapter 1

1492-1495 Memoirs of Ali E Khadir

Cyrenaica is failing it is weak in will and weak in wealth. My father over 30 years ago suggested a plan to m to bring us to greatness. I shall instigate this plan and may only pray it works. I have friends throughout our land from the East of the Mameluk Empire to the point of infidel incursion in Tangiers only Portugal, the Mameluks, Algieria and our own nation have any troops. My father wished us to expand to the west and destroy the incursion in Tangiers. Our leader Mohammed is spending my money at far to high a rate on his own pleasure. This plan shall be good for us as Mohammed is a large supporter of the military. If I can fill him with passion for war he may spend the treasury on useful things before his own enjoyment.

Things have gone well, ou military is now over 20 000 men as opposed to our early 10 000. Mohammed is now training with his men nearly daily. Our treasury is still nearly depleted but at least it is on cold steel as opposed to the Harem of a too foolish man. I have not recorded things lately but two events stand out in my mind now. Our close friends to the East, Turkey have entered a war with the Mameluks. We have yet to receive reports on how this war goes for either side. The other was that another of our friends Granada has finally fell to the forces of darkness. It seems we are blessed and tortured at the same time.

I penned the message to the inept leader of Tripoli it was sent today with an accompanying force of 20 000 troops. Truly wonderful news has reached us from our friends in Turkey only Asyut, Assuan, Alexandria, El Alamein and Damietta are in Mameluk hands.

It is but a month since my last entrance although news has reached us that our massive assault with every able man in the army has failed. Tripoli stands. Mohammed sent a message though informing me that at most there were 500 troops left manning the fortress but still our 14 000 could not overwhelm them. Truly we have angered the divine.

I arrived in Tripoli at the turn of the month and two days later finally received audience with Ali of Tripoli. He and his nation shall be annexed into the nation of Cyrenaica. There was much celebrating as our force entered the city and after over a full year of seige the nation's economy could grow. In the known world Tripolitania is the worlds largest exporter of Ivory. As an agreement to peace my family shall own much of this trade. The economic strength of the nation of Tripoli is over 4 times the size of Cyrenaica. Now we shall be the true power of our region.

It is ironic that on my deathbed at the age of 64 I receive some joyous news. Only Damietta is left in the hands of the Mameluks. Truly we shall grow in strength with our friends and allies the Turks.

Great start Sheilbh. I already know how good your literary skills are; I'm just surprised it took you so long to start an AAR.

I look forward to more.

The Battle for Tripoli

Notes of Army Doctor Ibn-Mahim

I have never seen such death and despair. At first dawn all of our men were waiting on the dunes around Tripoli, the dome on the Mosque glinted as the son rose only mildly higher. It was behind us and our commanders were already assesing the field. An Imam in front of me prayed with at least 5 000 dismounted cavalry-men their camels were being tended by some slaves from the outlying villages around Tripoli. Our leader Mohammed was enjoying himself, dining with some freshly installed Governor this day. Tripolitania was ours. Although defiant stood the glinting Mosque in Tripoli. It would be ours by tonight the officers told the men. After the dawn prayers battle was joined.

Thousand after thousand of men careering towards the walls. For each thousand that ran it seemed like barely a hundred returned each with an injury that the finest schools in Baghdad and Damascus could not have prepared the finest doctors in the world for. Arrows flew through the air as our troops fell under the rain and so we watched in horror as family after family was devastated with the death of the children of Cyrenaica. Thousands of dreams and hopes were demolished with the rain of arrows.

We were overwhelmed. This was tragically a war of greed and it shall forever be in the shamful books of Cyrenaican history. E Khadir wants wealth and will kill a thousand young countrymen for it. What happened here today was an act of evil orchastrated from Benghazi.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Editor's note
This was an alternative view of the "Massive" failed assault on Tripoli.
The Battle for Tripoli Account 2
From the Notes of a Cyrenaican Imam present at the battle.
We were fighting with divine purpose as our leader Mohammed explained the night before. We shall destroy all infidel incursions in this land. Tripoli is but a step in this glorious path. I have heard people utter words of treachery against our leaders. Including the Chief Minister E Khadir. Although he may undoubtedly gain from this war he truly does not support this war for personal reasons but for the reasons of the glory of our nation and our faith.
Let us not doubt this. Our troops ran to a glorious fight indeed so inspired I saw officers join the fray. Their numbers in the Tripolit force were cut to no more than 100 they could barely guard the city against a group of thieves while our many thousands of men sat eating grand meals. Our horses and camels were watered by local boys eager to work for the glorious troops of Cyrenaica.
Our many hundred of doctors were barely used as troops dismissed them wanting to die for the glory of our nation rather than have the help of barely educated peoples.
Let it never be doubted that although we failed in our battle we most definitely did prove that we were the righteous side. This day and this battle shall forever be treasured in the pride of our people.
