Ilon was a sleepy backwater system right on the edge of Imperial Space. Once a long time ago it was right on the edge of the great republic. It was rumored to be the last system admitted to the republic during the great expansion but that was not what brought the team of Archaeologists here. The planet was supposed to be one of the systems at the centre of the great Molkia revolt, the reigning Emperor (a strong one for a change) had sent the team here to find out more about the revolt that helped to bring about the rise and empire. The team knew much about the history of mankind and of all the technology that was lost during the fall, but this planet was backward even by their own standards never mind that of humanity at its height. It had been a tough expedition, however at a dig near the ruins of a settlement they had hit upon an interesting discovery. A manuscript, and they had set there best man to to try and decipher it.

The translation expert studied it for several days and the text made no sense what's so ever. It was in the Latin alphabet but it only used 26 letters, none of the additional letters to mark it out as either an Imperial or a Republican dialect. The letter shapes were also strange as well, it did not make any sense. This dated the text as pre-fall, however pre-fall everything was stored electronically. Either this was a copy of an older piece of work or this was a very old piece of text indeed. The translation software did it's best with the manuscript but the translation was very much incomplete. However enough had been translated to make some preliminary analysis. The translation expert went to see head archaeologist to report.

"This text is very strange indeed, it tells the story of a war, starting a few years before it breaks out. I do not think it is a story but an actual historical record. The text tells us of confederations like the USSR, Germany, Japan. It talks of leaders like Stalin and Hitler. However it is light on details, it is like we are supposed to know who these people are, if at the time this was written these were indeed famous people then this was explain much about it.

The document tells us about this war from the perspective of the USSR. The USSR knows that the war is coming and is making preparations for this. The early preparations for this are divided into three parts. They look to develop better equipment for their armed forces, paying particular attention to land forces. The USSR is also an resource rich confederation so they look to expand their industry in areas known as the Ural and Soviet Central Asia. The USSR also begins fortifying several systems. These are the ones in most immediate danger from Germany, which appears to be the main threat in the opinion of the document, and important systems deeper in confederation, like Moscow and Kiev. The system names they give ring no bells, we can't place this confederation anywhere in human space, assuming we knew what all of human space actually looked like." the translation expert concluded his early report.

The lead Archaeologist listen with great interest. A story of war people new nothing about, a document that was impossibly old. What did this all mean? Could this be the clue he was looking for or was it something else .... regardless the lead Archaeologist needed to know more.

"Continue your translation efforts, we need to know more about its contents. Dismissed." the lead Archaeologist went back to his thoughts.

So many questions. What ever this document was he hoped his masters would be pleased with it.

The translation expert was confused. He knew much about the fall of the great republic and the clash of the ideologies that brought about it's fall. The democratic inner systems vs the authoritarian outer systems. However this manuscript seem to talk of three ideologies clashing, democratic, fascist and communist. He had never heard of the other 2, where they just brands of authoritarian governments? Perhaps this could explain the collapse of the Empire after the death of the Emperor Asmire III, and the fall that followed it. One thing the manuscript was very clear about though was the fact that the communist ideology was by far the best of the three ideologies. The translation expert was not impressed with that claim. The republic had long talked about the superiority of their governments ideology, but that did not stop the republic collapsing when faced with a comparatively minor anarchist revolt.

Back to the document, the USSR was a member of the weakest of the three ideologies the communists, it feared the other 2 ideologies as they were likely to ally against the USSR. The document claimed this was because the USSR's ideology was so much more superior to the others. The translation expert was not so sure, victory normally goes to the strongest not the best. However the document talked of the inevitability of the clash between these ideologies. It seemed everyone was preparing for the war in their own way.

The USSR felt it needed to expand but had to wait for a conflict between the other 2 ideologies before it could do this. With this in mind the USSR changed its focus on it's research looking for practical benefits rather than theoretical progress. Although this would mean slower progress compared to a more focused strategy the USSR would be better prepared to meet a variety of threats compared to the ground only strategy. The translation expert saw logic in this approach.

The USSR also began to plan a diplomatic strategy, not really interested in building a large alliance, but more trying to ensure it's neighbors were not hostile to it. This gave the state more security, which was vital because the leaders were becoming increasingly concerned that the military was proving a threat to the regime, several traitors in the military were discovered and executed. A wise decision the translation expert thought, how many emperors had been dethroned by disloyal elements in the army?

Events outside the USSR took a depressingly familiar pattern, the confederation of Spain split into two factions, Nationalists and Republicans who were fighting over the control of various systems there. The USSR supported the Republic, while Germany supported the Nationalists. What surprised the translation expert was the fact that no one seized any of the former Spanish systems while the civil war was on going, perhaps this was still to come? Meanwhile a fascist confederation called Italy had destroyed and absorbed another confederation called Ethiopia. Also the Chinese nationalist confederation had absorbed it's two rival Chinese confederations (bringing to end a rather long running civil war it seemed) and another called Tibet. The manuscript talked of the Chinese nationalists have historical claims to the area, but what did that have to do with someone conquering somewhere? The names themselves meant nothing to the translation expert, but the story could be told through out any section of human space after the fall, confederations rising , confederations being destroyed and confederations being split by revolt.

Was this the story of a sector of space after the fall? The story was compellingly similar to one told a thousands times over, but the language and style of the manuscript said otherwise. The rest of team had uncovered various other artifacts for the dig but nothing seemed to connect to the manuscript. In fact nothing else seemed to be of interest at all. What was this document?

The lead archaeologist was looking though the latest report on the translation of the manuscript. Now there are some clues over the start of what was being termed the second great war. There was a first, was the immediate question to popped into the lead archaeologist's head? The mystery had indeed deepened. This war was mentioned in passing, there had been a fearful slaughter due to tactical thought not catching up with technology. This put another question into the lead archaeologist's head. The neo-feudal system stifled technological progress there had been none for who knows how long, not much since the fall anyway, when did this happen? However this was the story of a second war, which started just after the combatants recovered from the first. It started in the east, but that term was meaningless to the lead archaeologist. At the end of 1937 the Japan attack nationalist China. China had been weakened by a long run of civil-wars and didn't look likely to put much resistance. In fact it seemed to suggest the China would not prove much of an obstacle at all to the Japanese. Although the manuscript is not clear about this.

However that was not the main concern of the USSR leadership. It seems that the German confederation was getting restless. They had already absorbed the confederation of Austria. The manuscript seemed to suggest that many in Austria were pleased about this, however the other confederations were not. The detail was light but it seemed to suggest that if Germany had consulted with the other major confederations then they would of accepted this but Germany was determined to go it alone. Germany had next turned it's attention to a border readjustment with another confederation called Czechoslovakia. This had unnerved the USSR leadership greatly and they had felt forced to expand their army. The plans for industrial expansion and fortifications were put on hold as the USSR began to divert more of it's resources over to expansion on the army. The USSR felt it had a few years to prepare and began to built it's defences up section by section. The garrisons around a system called Odessa were the first to receive reinforcements. The USSR felt it still had a few years till war became unavoidable, so it felt it could be a little patient when it came to building up it's army.

Interesting this, most wars that the lead archaeologist seemed to start without wanning, this war seemed to be building up for some time. Even the great Molkia revolt started without any clear warning signs, one day peace and the next day over 1,000 systems across 50 confederations were in open revolt, and 1,000 more were simmering with discontent. However this war looked long in the making very curious indeed. When did this happen? The lead archaeologist just wanted one clue, just one.

Oh, I think I haven't seen this sort of approach in an AAR before, from an archeologist perspective. Nicely done. :)

Thanks for that. It is a bit of an experiment, I don't know if people will to take to it or not.
