Hi everyone, I am Totally_American. You may know me from my previous AAR "The Southern Star" which was unfortunately cancelled due to my save files getting deleted. I decided that instead of starting another Texas AAR, I should instead start something that no one else has done in Victoria 2: A Manhattan Commune AAR.

The Manhattan Commune will be a communist nation (According to the Difference Engine).
I will be starting on the house divided start date.

I may "Role Play" a bit with it, but I'm not sure yet. Anyways, first chapter will be out soon!

Prologue: 1836-1863

"Mexican American war"
America was torn apart by several small events that they caused themselves, and would unfortunately lead to the collapse of their wonderful nation. In the early 1830's the United States of America fought a war with Mexico, they acquired several of Mexico's northern provinces and Colonies. Those colonies, would later rebel against their American leaders. Some of the provinces taken from Mexico would also turn their backs on the Union, and raise their arms for the Confederacy.

"The Civil War"
The outcomes one war would drastically effect the next war. That's what happened to the Americans when the South finally had enough, and left the union. The South's strong colonies in the Caribbean, Mexico, and the North West U.S led to a larger southern army than the north. What ended the war was when a huge southern army marched right through Pennsylvania, and after controlling all of it, they went on to New York, to New England. The South had then held almost all of the American's industry, and without factories manufacturing more weapons for the weakened American Army, the US had no choice but to surrender.

"The war of 1864"
Following the civil war, the U.S was in chaos. Left and right, extremists groups gained power, states wanted to secede, and for once in the United States' history, more people were leaving the U.S then coming to it. Eventually the U.S got into a war with Great Britain, over who's sphere of influence the South would be in. It was a short war that only lasted a year, but America was utterly destroyed. The U.S kept switching from a Communist dictatorship, to a monarchy, to a Presidential dictatorship, in the end the Monarchy succeded, and the old America was gone. The Reactionary extremists fled to California and seceded, while the communists went to one of the last remaining places on North America to implement their ideology: New York.

And thus the Manhattan Commune was born.

1: I couldn't get any pictures in because my Victoria 2 is still a little messed up
2: Although the Communists have fled to New York, the new nation isn't a full proletarian dictatorship. The Communists quickly changed to more of Liberals to prevent the overall populous, which feared the Communists, from throwing a revolt.

So we have a Confederacy still alive and kicking, the US as a weak kingdom, an independent California dominated by exiled reactionairies and a communist Manhattan being formed?

1863-1866: Birth of a nation

The January of 1863 would be remembered to many as the day the Kingdom of America, weakened by a war with the Confederacy, reluctantly signed a peace treaty proclaiming that the Manhattan Commune would be officially recognized as a nation. Unfortunately the Americans still figured a way to get a little bit of gain from treaty, the main one being that the Manhattan Commune can not become a communist nation [1]. Regardless, the people of Manhattan all cheered when the news arrived. Either way, the Manhattan citizens would still have much more freedom than the slave-owning south, the dictatorship of California, or the subjects of the King of America. Some would remember January 1st, 1863 as "Independence day", but Albert Green would forever remember it as the day he was trapped in a country without access to the sea.

Born and raised in Long Island with a fisherman as a father, it's needless to say that Albert loved the sea. Albert left Long Island after his father was killed by loyalists, and fled to New York which would supposedly be the most equal, fair, and "Best" country in all of North America. Unfortunately for Albert, the borders were drawn by the Americans, and they believed that preventing the Manhattan Commune from having coastal access would "Strangle" the country.

Albert may live in one of the last places of liberty on Earth, but that doesn't change the fact that the Manhattan Commune simply does not have a bordering province to the sea.

daOxxAT.jpg

New york city (Which clearly has an adjacent water province), which does not have any coastal access

The Manhattan Commune officially came into existence, but as any new nation would, it face many problems in only it's first few days of existence, the first one being a leader. The structure of the Commune was similar to the old American's style of government[2], one Commander in Chief (President), a congress, etc. The most likely candidate for president was a fellow named Benjamin Thomson.

fbCgDyB.png

An image of Thomson in the late 19th century

Thomson didn't choose to be a "President", he was just considered to be a good provisional leader, and he was called up to become President. Provisional governments were usually implemented in the newly-founded North American nations (Such as the CSA and California Dictatorship), and the sole leaders were usually former generals, such as Benjamin Thomson. Thomson was a conservative general, who fought a few minor battles (The entire war for the Manhattan Commune to exist was mostly a few minor battles), but he always ended up crushing the enemy forces. That and his natural ability to make people "Follow" him lead to him becoming the first President of the commune. And because he was a former general, the first thing he did was make a REAL army for the new nation.

zM7vFys.png

The Manhattan Commune, believe this or not, had a population which was larger than countries which had landmass that was 10 times larger than the Commune's. Needless to say, Manhattan was very dense. The large population allowed for many brigades to be built, except there were a few problems. The Manhattan Commune hadn't invested in any technologies or ideas, and thus they were considered to be a Unciviled-Nation-Turned-Civilized technology wise. Thomson researched Military Plans, which would allow him to construct units other than cavalry and irregulars.

Another notable act in which Thomas did, was lessen spending on Education and Administration. This act wasn't popular among some (A handful of Teachers and Bureaucrats), but nonetheless it made the Commune more money.

Not much else happened in the lazy summer of 1864, other than the California Dictatorship (Luckily) getting conquered by the Mexicans.

3WXghbZ.jpg

Things either way were not looking to good for the Californians. First off, the fact that one man could take almost complete power over a country and yet could still call himself President really messed with some of the Californians. The man's name was Mark or some other common farmer boy name, but he preferred to call himself "Julius Maximus" in hopes of being as great and successful as the famous Roman Dictator "Julius Caeser".

In reality, things didn't go his way. First problem was the lack of people in California, Manhattan patriots would joke about how while California owned a landmass that was around 30 times larger than that of the Commune, the Californians still had a population that was only a fourth of the Commune at best. The second problem was that California was independent, and there were little to no people who wanted to become Soldiers. That left the Dictatorship open to attack, or rebellion. The third problem was that the Mexicans still believed that the region of California should be under their control. All of those things lead to the complete annexation of California into Mexico [3].

Another important thing happened in the summer of 1864, the Manhattan Army was finally ready for battle.

Kh9H6iu.png

The army was named "Liberation Army", because Manhattan was one of the only remaining places of Liberty [4] on North America. The Army would have to stay put in New York, and would act as a somewhat police force.
The General was Henry Crittenden, who (Like Thomson) had his fair share of battles in the short Manhattan War of Independence. Crittenden and Thomson

mV49IoH.png

Near the end of his term, Thomson decided to invest research in "The Right's of man". Thomson was an abolitionist, it's a no-brainer on why he would study the Right's of Man. In fact, some of the immigrants which came from the Kingdom of America would be runaway slaves.

kSg0EPf.png

Thomson finally was able to acquire methods of creating new types of units other than Cavalry and Irregulars.

ZKZ7xNp.png

And with that the term of Thomson came to an end.

Although it may seem like what he did put the Commune on track, Manhattan still lacked industry and prestige. Manhattan also had problems of losing population occasionally, and it was ranked 68th in the entire world! Luckily, Thomson, even though he had a short term, knew that his reforms would make the Commune better than ever.

______________
Author's Notes:
[1]: When I released the Manhattan Commune, it was a democracy by default.
[2]: The Manhattan Commune's style of democracy was almost identical to the USA's, who they so dearly hated now.
[3]: Most people would agree, it's probably for the best.
[4]: The Manhattan's still couldn't get that out of their head

Sorry guys! This chapter was very sloppy, I had to start writing it at about 10 o'clock, so I might've rushed a bit. Either way, I hope you enjoyed the first chapter! If anything wasn't clear, or you just have questions about the current state of the commune, just ask me!

This doesn't seem rushed to me. The Manhattan Commune is in a rough position; you desperately need access to the sea. Still, not horrible for what you have.

Poor California didn't last long, I see. How will America fair?
