P.S. The check is in the mail.:p

Joe
It had better be a bank check this time! When you sent me that personal check, not only did it bounce, they nearly arrested me trying to cash it! I don't know how you manage to get internet access on the run... :D

And Lordie-Dordie, you'd better watch it. :) On the other hand, at least now you're admitting that I have any brains that I could blow out. It's a step up, I guess. ;)

Storey, isn't it amazing how Sgt. B's mere presence on this aar creates mayhem and confusion?

I don't know about the rest of those who read this thread, but I rated it 5 stars. How many votes does it take to rate the thread, anyway?

That's right, baby! Mayhem and Confusion! Yeah. The Sarge rules! :D

And it takes one vote if it's my vote. I wanted to rate it one star but something went wrong. Oh, well.

For two grown countries to act like this nauseated him.

Saxony

July 1553
Moritz walked back and forth in his study. The military maps were laid out of the large oak table for easy access. His military advisors stood quietly and waited for Moritz to ask what they all dreaded. He finally stopped and turned to them and asked.

"Which among you thought this was a good idea? This alliance with England? This state marriage of convenience. Did Johann really think this up all by himself or did some of you help him down this dangerous path? I have already been corresponding with Anton and it seems he was never in favor of this addition to the Alliance."

No one moved least they draw attention to themselves. Moritz without waiting for an answer turned once again to the maps and pointed a finger to France.

"Like it or not our grand alliance is going to be tested on France. It is the only place where we have mutual goals and maybe just maybe the three of us can all get what we want. Anton agrees to my plan and all I am waiting for is to hear from England. Gentlemen prepare the armies for war."
With that Moritz turned and left the room much to the relief of his officers.

July 1553
The news when it came was fast, furious and terrible. Mary I rose to the throne in England. One of her first acts was to Reinstate Papal power over the Church of England. This caused a cascading series of events that destroyed the Alliance and Moritz.

England left the Military Alliance she had with Saxony and Oldenburg.
England broke the Royal Marriage she had with Oldenburg.
England converts to Catholic.

All this proved too much for Moritz. He was no longer a young man and this blow to his plans of expanding Saxony’s power to the south was more than he could take. In a fit of rage over England’s actions he suffered a stroke and was soon dead. The sudden demise of Moritz caused a brief panic before it was noticed that he had left a will and had proclaimed his successor to be none other than his nephew August. A man of short stature and shorter temper he was eager to avenge the honor of Saxony and force England to regret changing her state religion.

August 1553
England entered a Military Alliance with Poland, Eire, Papal States and Venice.

September 1553
Savoy entered an alliance with Austria. As August signed the declaration of war against England he felt confident that Oldenburg and Saxony were a match for England. The only worry was Poland. His spies had reported that there were no Polish armies anywhere near Saxony and August hoped for a quick knock out blow against England who was involved in numerous rebellions and attacks from other countries. All that stood between Saxony and victory was Poland. In the end it all came down to having faith in the Saxon armies and their leaders. One in particular was Frederick who commanded the Anhalt Regiment. A promising officer who would get his chance for glory in the coming war.
Saxony declares war against England. Oldenburg joins Saxony while Poland, Venice and the Papal States join England. Saxony moves first with Frederick besieging Brabant.

October 1553
Aachen with the Friesen Regiment besieges Mecklenburg.

September 1553
Oldenburg is raising troops and marching its armies. It’s just not clear where they’re marching to yet.

November 1553
August is disgusted when he hears that Hessen has given Poland military access. One day Hessen will have to answer for her sins against Saxony. Gelre quickly follows Hessen and gives Poland military access.

December 1553
England launches an amphibious landing and besieges Friesen. Oldenburg have marched its entire military might (32,000) to Bremen. August thinks that they had planned to besiege Mecklenburg but he beat them to it. Now they just sit in Bremen.

February 1554
Mecklenburg falls to Saxony. Aachen marches toward Brabant. August sends a peace agreement to England demanding Mecklenburg for peace. England doesn’t even reply.

March 1554
Poland has besieged Sachsen. The worst has happened and now August can only hope that the strong walls will stop the Polish forces.

May 1554
England captures Friesen. August signs the peace agreement as quickly as he can. With the ink still drying the celebration begins for Saxony and Poland have agreed to a Status Quo peace.

June 1554
Brabant is captured from England. August receives reports that half of England is revolting and several of its provinces on the continent have also revolted.

July 1554
Frederick besieges Flandern.

(OOC) A strange problem occurred at this point in the game. The computer wouldn’t let me conduct a siege of Flandern. I would move my army to the province and start the siege and then maybe a month later I would see my army retreating from the province. I had enough men to conduct a siege but the computer wouldn’t let me do it. I thought this very strange and had to change my plans because of this crazy problem. Any ideas why this happened?

September 1554
Saxony attacks in Friesen but loses the battle.

December 1554
Saxony puts down a revolt in Koln. Saxony loses a battle in Friesen.

January 1555
August had the news from his most trusted sources. England had gone bankrupt! Another nail in her coffin.

May 1555
Saxony wins a battle in Friesen and starts a siege. Oldenburg finally decides that its time to do something and they march (27,000) to Flandern and besiege the city.

September 1555
Denmark accepted peace with Sweden on the following terms: Skåne to Sweden. August notes that Denmark continues to lose against Sweden. Perhaps Denmark will be a future victim of the Alliance.

December 1555
Saxony recaptures Friesen.

January 1556
Oldenburg captures Flandern from England.

February 1556
Oldenburg besieges Calais. Oldenburg assaults Calais and captures the city.

March 1556
France refuses to give us military access. We can’t reach any more provinces of England and we have no navy. England turns down Saxony’s peace offer of giving Mecklenburg to Saxony.

October 1556
England attacks in Calais and in Flandern. England wins in Calais but loses in Flandern.

November 1556
England besieges Brabant. Oldenburg attacks in Brabant and defeats England.

March 1557
Denmark accepted peace with Münster on the following terms : Münster pays 107$ in indemnities.

May 1557
Oldenburg defeats England in Calais.

August 1557
England accepted peace with Oldenburg on the following terms : England pays 120$ in indemnities. Chesapeake to Oldenburg. August sent his congratulations to Anton. The two had been conferring almost continuously for the past few months trying to decide how to end the war. Anton didn’t want the provinces that Oldenburg had managed to capture because they were too far away and would be revolt prone so it was decided between the two of them that Oldenburg would get what money it could and then Saxony would march in and conquer the provinces from England which would enable it to put more pressure on England to agree to Saxony’s peace proposal. It sounded so easy.

(OOC) I was stymied since I couldn’t get to England and they keep refusing my peace proposals. I could only hope that the computer controlled Oldenburg would do what it did. I think it’s the first time in the game that the computer did what I wanted. But now I want Mecklenburg!

December 1557
England offers 450d for peace. August pondered what he could do with that many ducats but in the end he knew that he really wanted Mecklenburg and he was going to get it. Saxony refuses England’s offer.

March 1558
Frederick attacks in Flandern and wins the battle and besieges the city.

April 1558
England attacks in Flandern. Frederick wins but dies in the battle. There are 36,000 English troops in Calais sitting there not moving.

June 1558
Saxony accepted peace with England on the following terms : Mecklenburg to Saxony & Brabant to Saxony. August stands on the balcony waving to the cheering crowd. The bells in all of the churches have been ringing non-stop for the entire day and won’t stop until sunrise tomorrow. The feast would cost August dearly but it was worth it. Saxony had gained two provinces. One of which had a Center of trade and a port! Now that the great gamble was over he could take some time off and rest. He knew that he and the country needed to rest.

November 1558
August reads that Elizabeth I is now queen of England. He wonders what she will make of England’s recent humiliations at Saxony’s hands. Perhaps a letter of congratulations was in order. It couldn’t hurt to add a line or two of his personal devotion to the new queen. After all he had heard that she was a Protestant. Perhaps even a gift?

Oldenburg

January 1559
Anton is amused when the message from August of Saxony arrives asking if Oldenburg will become a vassal of Saxony. He sends s back a polite response declining the honor. Taking it as a joke he writes back that if August isn’t careful someone else will return the favor and vassalize Saxony.

April 1559
Modena declares war against Poland. No one knew at the time that this little war was to have repercussions that would transform the Alliance. Papal States join Poland while England and Venice dishonor the alliance.

October 1559
Modena loses its war and is annexed by Papal States.

November 1560
Sweden declares war against Denmark. Anton is sorry to read that Munster joined Sweden against Denmark. He had hoped to woo Munster back into the Alliance but it was not to be.

Saxony

November 1560
August listened to his personal aide who read the days dispatches. "Honorable Lord, our Personal Gift has considerably improved our relations with Gelre. They should however still be regarded as our hated enemy." August shrugged his shoulders and said. "Continue the gifts. They are reluctant but I’m determined to get them into the Alliance. Even Anton agrees with me this time." His aide then reads a letter from Elizabeth I. August is pleased to hear that Elizabeth has responded warmly to his many letters and composes another one.

January 1561
As August listens to his aide read the latest letter from dear Elizabeth he feels that he has finally found someone who understands him. He feels so strongly about her that he is contemplating learning to read so that he and he alone will know what is in her letters to him.

February 1561
Honorable Lord, our Letter of Introduction has slightly improved our relations with Gelre. They should be regarded as completely neutral. August chewed his lower lip. This was taking longer than the expected. He had only so many diplomats and Gelre’s alliance with Hessen was going to run out in September.

June 1561
Denmark accepted peace with Münster on the following terms: Return to Status Quo.

July 1561
His aide cleared his throat and read. "Honorable Lord, our State Gift has enormously improved our relations with Gelre. They should be regarded as very dear friends! At last August could see real progress in his goal.

September 1561
August felt the satisfaction of a job well done. It had cost Saxony a great deal of gold but he knew it was worth it. The Alliance had just added Gelre, a country that had been a powerful enemy but was now a powerful friend. August is busy with his council when a servant enters and whispers in his ear. He quickly stands up and without so much as a glance to the nobles in the room leaves the chamber. The servant leans over to one of the nobles and says. "Another letter from England has arrived. The nobles in the council chamber angrily look at one another.

(OOC) For the first time in at least 100 years I and not the computer added a country to the alliance.

Gelre

October 1561
Willem III von Kleve sipped his white wine and smiled at the fruity and buttery flavors that ran over his tongue. He was celebrating his decision to join the Saxony and Oldenburg alliance. They were admittedly Protestant but he wouldn’t hold that against them. He had made a practical decision and he wasn’t going to let religion distract him from his goal. There were too many countries that were growing powerful and Gelre must match them it they wanted to survive.

February 1562
Münster has cancelled the treaty of military access they had in Saxony.

May 1562
Willem was in his garden directing his gardeners when one of his aides approached and said. "My Lord Marquis, our Personal Gift has moderately improved our relations with Oldenburg. They have indicated that they should be considered our friends to. Willem later reads with satisfaction that Saxony has granted him (Gelre) military access.

March 1563
Oldenburg grants Gelre military access.

April 1563
The news surprises Willem when he hears that England he turned Protestant. This is followed by the news that England joined their alliance. Willem doesn’t think anything can surprise him anymore. He doesn’t trust England but they could prove to be a powerful ally. He sends a letter congratulating Elizabeth I on joining the Alliance.

January 1565
Willem is stunned into silence as he reads that France has joined the Alliance. Willem thinks that August has been a very busy fellow indeed. He gives a silent thanks to God that he is also part of the alliance. To think what would have been Gelre’s fate to be surrounded by an alliance this strong is frightening to put it mildly. It must now be one of the most powerful in history. How long can so much power not be used?

March 1565
Willem knows that he has to act fast if he is going to use the Alliance to his advantage so he declares war upon Münster. Sweden joins Munster while everyone in the Alliance joins Gelre. Armies are marching everywhere and troops are being raised in most provinces. An ant’s nest is truly an apt description for what is happening. Charles the IX becomes king of France.

May 1565
Siegen leads the Geldre regiment and attacks in Munster and wins the battle and starts a siege of the city.
Saxony attacks in Hannover but loses. Munster attacks in Oldenburg in Pfalz and besieges the city.

June 1565
The Zeeland regiment led by Thoringen besieges Kleves.

July 1565
Munster abandons the siege in Pfalz and marches toward Hannover.

August 1565
We capture Munster. England besieges Hannover. Munster attacks England in Hannover but loses the battle.

September 1565
Willem is amused when Sweden abandons Munster and reaches a Status Quo peace with Gelre. England, Saxony and Oldenburg have 73,000 troop besieging Hannover.

October 1565
England captures Hannover.

March 1566
Gelre captures Kleves.

June 1566
Thoringen besieges Holstein.

August 1566
Anton of Oldenburg being the wise old bird he is and realizing that if he doesn’t act quickly he will get nothing signs a peace agreement with Munster and gets 50 ducats for peace.

September 1566
Gelre has an exceptional year and adds 100d to the treasury and inflation drops 5%.

December 1566
Gelre captures Holstein. Willem negotiates with Munster and forces them to give Hannover to England and Gelre gets Kleves and Holstein in the peace agreement. Willem is greatly amused that he has so quickly used the Alliance to further Gelre’s power. Some of the nobles’ question him letting Hannover go to England until Willem points out that Elizabeth I is unmarried and a little gift like Hannover might help her select his son as a royal mate. If he has judged Queen Elizabeth correctly she will only respond to actions that add to her power, besides if the worst happens England will find it very difficult to protect Hannover. The nobles grumble but have to agree that he makes sense.

April 1567
England gives us military access.

November 1567
Willem now really knows that nothing can surprise him anymore. He rereads the dispatch and it still reads the same. "Saxony agrees to become a vassal of England!" All Willem can do is shake his head in wonder. The leader of the Alliance is now a vassal to another country in the Alliance? Willem shakes his head and wonders what game August and Elizabeth are playing. If the two of them aren’t careful they will bring the rest of the alliance down on their heads!

Sgt. Bloomfield. Civ III:eek: You mean they did another one after Civ I? Boy I've got to get out more often.

Sharur. For the most part I let the computer do the recruiting for the alliance and yes sometimes it turns out to be quite a surprise. The good part is that it gives me the chance to use the new member to further my own goals. Of course those goals are different with each country.:D

stickman. Thanks for the comments. I'm not sure I would say he's my favorite Sarge. It's more like he's my only Sarge.:p :D

Sorcerer. Now there's an idea! A double diplo annex event. There's got to be a stability loss for that event.

There might be a pause in this AAR. It seems that the Nimda virus has stuck our computers at work and until it's cleaned up I won't be able to post the next segment. Hopefully it can be cleaned up today but I won't know till later. May the Gods in their infinite wisdom find that certain special place in hell for the idiot who doesn't have anything better to do than write viruses that screw up other people.

I'm at least back on line for a short time so here goes.

Saxony

January 1570
August was still feeling the pressure from his nobles following the debacle with Elizabeth I of England. There were rumors of plots to overthrow him and he took them seriously. What he needed was a diversion to take some of the heat off of him. A war would be perfect but it just wasn’t possible right now. However he had another brilliant idea or at least he thought it brilliant. Friesen had proven to be the weak link of all the provinces in Saxony. It seemed to be the first province attacked in any war Saxony found itself in so it occurred to August that the time had come to create a vassal of Friesen. When he notified the nobles of his plans they were unsure of the wisdom of the act. August pointed out that they would receive part of the income of Friesen and not have to pay for any of the upgrades that the province wanted. The nobles grudgingly came around to the idea and August signed the order. The people of Friesen sang the praise of August and danced in the streets. The first thing they did was to change the name of their country to Holland. At first all went according to plan and there was peace throughout the land but then a strange thing happened. Holland decided not to play by the rules.

November 1570
A new center of trade opened in Holland. At the same time Willem III von Kleve of Gelre decided to join the new country of Holland forming a new republic. Suddenly Saxony found itself with a stronger member of the alliance than it had planned or should I say stronger than August had planned. The nobles at first were not pleased with August until he pointed out that they now shared in the wealth of not only Friesen but also Gelre. This sudden increase of gold in everyone’s pockets muted the protests and August started patting himself of on his back. Little did he know that you can’t change the course of history without a few strange repercussions popping up now and then.

(OOC) I don’t know if I triggered the event or if it was programmed to happen. I know that Holland is going to form but at this moment? It seems strange that by chance I let Friesen go as a vassal just at the time that Holland was suppose to start. I haven’t watched in the past to see the year that Holland is formed. Would it have happened if I hadn’t let Friesen go?

December 1570
Elizabeth I of England showing great magnanimity graciously grants Saxony military access. August is glad she didn’t hold a grudge. Austria declares war against Poland. August watches to see which of these giants’ blinks first. A variety of smaller gnat sized countries join the two heavy weights but August knows that they will play little part in deciding the winner of this contest.

February 1571
The Netherlands agrees to join our alliance. August thinks of himself as the greatest diplomat of his age.

(OOC) I didn’t want to Gelre/Holland to get away!

November 1571
After the titanic struggle was over Poland paid Austria 87d for peace. If August had paid for a ticket for this fight he would be demanding his money back.

December 1571
The next year sees various provinces revolt but it’s nothing Saxony can’t handle.

December 1572
Enthusiasm for the army has produced 5,000 men for the army.

January 1573
Poland went bankrupt. August for a moment is tempted to pluck the plum that is dangling before his eyes but he decided that even with Poland Bankrupt he was still not ready for the challenge.

February 1573
The monarchs of the Alliance headed the funeral procession. Behind them came the nobles of the great houses followed by the various minor nobles that you could find by shaking any family tree if you shook it hard enough. Everyone realized that an era had passed with the death of Anton I. He had led Oldenburg for so many years that it was odd to think of never seeing his old bearded face again. Anton had died peacefully in his sleep, which just showed that anything was possible. His son Johann VI walked with the other monarch at the head of the procession looking neither right nor left. The young man was already showing that he was feeling the pressure of being king. The procession wound itself into the church and the common people crowed around the entrance trying to see and hear what was happening inside. And so another king has died. "Long live the King."

April 1573
Elizabeth asks for a royal marriage and August politely declines.

May 1573
The Netherlands grants Saxony military access.

September 1574
August agrees with the secret plans that his military advisors had drawn up. He gives the go ahead for the military to move the armies and prepare the men.

February 1574
Saxony declares war against Hessen. August declines the generous offer of aid from the members of the Alliance knowing that poor Hessen can’t prevail against the might of Saxony.

March 1574
Even as the war starts the economy of Saxony has improved and as soon as Hessen is brought to its knees August plans to expand and improve the economy.

April 1574
Saxony defeats the Hessen army in Hessen and besieges the city. The remnants of the Hessen army are too small to be a threat so they are ignored. With the city besieged the war it is all over but the for the shouting.

April 1575
Luxembourgh declares its independence from France. Who would believe that such a little country could change the course of a war and create the havoc that was about to fall on Saxony. France calls on its allies to help but only Saxony agrees. August sends out messages to Oldenburg and The Netherlands to rejoin the alliance, which they do, and they both join the war against Luxembourgh and unfrotunately against Hessen. August doesn’t send a message to dear Elizabeth because there is still the possibility that she will try to talk him into becoming a vassal once again. Just thinking of Elizabeth in her hip high black leather boots with her whip, towering over a chained August demanding that he become her vassal causes August’s blood to pound through his veins. No it was a better idea that England leave the Alliance and leave it now!

June 1575
The peasants were hopeful that August would listen to them but August was still conscious of the unrest among the nobles and so he decides to ignore the Petition of Redress, which causes a revolt in Sachsen.

July 1575
England entered a Military Alliance with Spain, Tuscany and Navarra. August waves goodbye to Elizabeth.

August 1575
Oldenburg joins the siege in Hessen with 25,000 troops. Saxony still the leader of the siege. August gets word that William of Orange is marching toward Hessen and he orders an assault on the city that is close to surrendering. The assault fails.

September 1575
Denmark declares war against The Netherlands. Only Saxony honors the Alliance. Again August sends messages to Johann of Oldenburg and now also to Henri of France trying to convince them of the wisdom of rejoining the Alliance. They both agree and declare war against Denmark. Again August feels that he has saved the day. William of Orange joins the siege of Hessen and takes over the leadership of the siege. His personality is such that no one disagrees. Saxony pulls its forces out of the siege. Denmark besieges Holstein.

November 1575
The Netherlands captures Hessen and annexes Hessen. August is depressed for days. It was such a simply plan. How could it go so wrong?

December 1575
Denmark besieges Mecklenburg.

January 1576
Denmark with 27,000 troops assaults Mecklenburg and captures the city. August winches as he signs the peace treaty and gives Denmark 34d. His dreams of conquest have been dashed and all he can now do is sit back and see what else William of Orange can add to his growing empire. Hannover revolts against England and besieges the city. Oldenburg helps France besiege Artois, which is controlled by rebels.

April 1576
William of Orange besieges Luxembourgh. Rebels have revolted in Oldenburg and besiege the city. France recaptures Artois. Denmark capture Holstein from the Netherlands.

July 1576
Sweden declares war against Denmark. August holds his head wondering what would have happened if he had stayed in the war. Plaven leading the Brabant army crushes the rebel army in Oldenburg. Johann sends his thanks to August.

August 1576
Denmark besieges Bremen. However they quickly break off the siege.

September 1576
Oldenburg joins The Netherlands in besieging Luxembourgh.

November 1576
William of Orange assaults and captures Luxembourgh and annexes the province for The Netherlands

December 1576
Denmark besieges Oldenburg.

February 1577
Scotland declares war on The Netherlands. All the allies in the Alliance dishonor the alliance. August himself does the same and then painstakingly rebuilds the Alliance with Oldenburg, France and even The Netherlands joining once again. The nobles to show there support for August give the treasury 200d.

March 1577
William of Orange attacks with 10,000 troops against 16,000 Danish troops in Oldenburg and eliminates the Danish army.

June 1577
William of Orange besieges Holstein.

September 1577
Oldenburg besieges Jylland.

April 1578
William of Orange captures Holstein. Oldenburg besieges Sjelland.

December 1578
The message was simple. "Plague hits in Wurzburg. 5,000 people dead."

June 1579
Hannover declares its independence form England.

July 1579
Oldenburg captures Sjelland. France and The Netherlands besiege Østlandet. Oldenburg captures Jylland.

November 1579
The Netherlands capture Østlandet.

January 1580
Denmark gives Østlandet to the Netherlands for peace.

Was it something they said? Or did Bloomers bring out his bagpipe and offer to play "That Cute Little Sheep with the Tight Curly Wool" in that high pitched, reedy voice of his? :p

Now it's time for you to play as France ;) Not to mention the Netherlands, they are really moving. Although taking Ostlandet over Holstein or something closer seems odd...

LD, it was Bloomers. It's always Bloomers. Did you see the way his bagpipe flying through the air sent the French into hysterics? :D

A little problem occurred as you can see in the next segment. France bowed out of the alliance so I can't play them and I was going to try them next. (Watch out Austria) There is also a problem with playing the Netherlands. They don't have a flag so I can't select them as a country to play. I can select Gelre but when I try to load a game where they've joined Holland to form The Netherlands the games quits. I was looking forward to playing them but I don't think it's possible.:(
