BTW, it seems that Anne is far away from home. How will she be in her new (and I fear, more barbarian) home?

Well obviously she's quite well-adjusted by the time she got around to writing the Alexandriad, but that could (hopefully...) be decades into the future from now. We haven't heard that much about Anna's personal life yet because she's been busy writing about the war with the Normans (which is one of the most important events in the AAR because everything else which happens happens because of it.) but next update will probably reveal more about her and Alexander, because there's not that much warring (comparatively) going on.

I can say one thing though, Anna and Alexander must love each other a great deal judging by the size of their new family! I'd say any home-sickness she may feel would be cushioned by her genuine love for her new husband. ;)

Anna has an obsession with badgers that borders on the disturbing, but otherwise her Fair and Balanced reporting on the conquests of Alexander (both of Britain and the bedstead) make for very engaging reading. :)

So, now to get Alexander (the first, the Great) out from under the yoke of the false 'Emperor'...

Hey, it's King William II who like most Normans according to Anna has a disturbing obsession with four-legged mammals of the badger and weasel varieties. Don't shoot the biographer!

Unfortunately that epithet is already taken, so this Alexander will have to make do with "the Conqueror" for now. (isn't that one of the few epithets in CKII which overrides all others and can't be got rid of once it has been earned?) Independence is certainly on Alexander's mind right now, but unfortunately as you'll see in the next update, he's not the only one who thinks that way. ;)

I should have that update finished within 24 hours, so stay tuned everyone! :)

I apologise for both the tardy and somewhat "dry" update. Suffice to say, I'd forgotten just how tedious and long this civil war was. Next update will deal with more important matters, such as our relationship with the HRE, I promise!

Independence is a must. The HRE's name splattered across the whole of England... *Sigh*, It's sorta depressing. :p

Popular opinion demands no less; the English people will never accept Euro-federalism!

It is one thing to be born unto a throne, but quite another to have raised oneself unto it: fortune favours one, merit the other, and of the two it is the latter which is to be preferred. Alexandros had through the force of his strength, resourcefulness of his industry and the power of his will raised himself unto the throne of England, but being born unto a throne has advantages which raising oneself unto one does not, namely that of legitimacy.

Alexandros was still seen by many of his well-to-do subjects – most of whom at this stage were Norman or Saxons loyal to the Norman regime – as some kind of meddling foreign usurper, as if he were a latter-day King Alaric after the sacking of Rome, here to oppress and bring barbaric tyranny to the people of England. Both Normans and some Saxons I have noticed have no understanding of the concept of irony.

Alexandros had no power base upon being crowned King, so his first act as monarch was to build one. All baronies he had inherited, plus a small number of counties were distributed to his loyal vassals and supporters. Some – but not all, it must be mentioned – of these new Barons and Counts were Dutchmen; some were Saxon, or Britons – one or two were even Norman! Regardless of petty ethnicities, these men formed the glue which held Alexandros' rule in the early days together; all which happened subsequently was made possible by them and their support.

Their loyalties were tested early on, and the old order shook like a tremor through the streets of Antioch when Alexandros demanded that the former King Radolf be exiled from the Kingdom a mere 24 hours earlier he once ruled for the rest of his natural life, never to return.[1] Normally the punishment would be execution, but due to the victim's age and Alexandros' grace, he was spared the executioner's axe and granted clemency instead. Radolf and his caretakers fled to Sicily, where they swore fealty to Radolf's weasel-born Norman brethren. He would die there a year later in a “suspicious accident” aged only four. Such is the nature of Norman politics.

banishradolf.png

Alexandros took further steps to consolidate his rule, but truth be told there was not much to consolidate that had not been consolidated already. The peasantry – much unlike their lords and masters – were happy and contented, and generally not in a rebellious mood. Taxes were rather low, and the government was quite centralised even by Roman standards[2].

crownlawsengland.png

The Crown Laws of England as inherited by Alexander from the Normans upon his successful conquest of England.

Alexandros was very keen to portray his rule not as a foreign conquest but as a continuation of the existing order, albeit one with a slightly different ruling class. “England would remain England, an independent kingdom and not merely a province of Holland, let alone the HRE” he would say to his close friends and associates, and to cement this sentiment with actions as well as words, one of his first acts as sovereign was to move his court from Holland to the cities of London and Westminster and arrange a grand get-together of the local great and the good in the form of a hunt though the grounds outside the city. I am sure that posterity is rather tired of the same old accounts of grand hunts, or of tournaments or great feasts and so I shall not do future readers a disservice by elaborating further.

londoncapitalhunt.png

The hunt also gave Alexandros a great chance to assess the talents of the local nobles and determine their worth for places in his yet unfilled grand council. Despite an old English adage advising against the appointment of one's spouse to the position, Alexandros was gracious enough to name me his spymaster.

CABINET.png

As spymaster, my primary job was to protect my husband and weed out plots and their plotters against him. I spent much of my time and energy dissuading one Robert, (I often wonder why do all Norman males appear to be named either William or Robert?) Duke of Normandy, bastard, pompous braggart and a general plague upon civilisation and all who live on the Almighty's green, flat earth from raising the bloody standard of rebellion against dear Alexandros...

RobertII.png

For one as cowardly and lazy as he, Robert II sure enjoyed his “working holidays” in the Holy Land...

...In retrospect it was perhaps too difficult a labour for one mortal to perform – and a mere humble woman at that!

rebellion.png

But before I go into details about Robert the Pox-Upon-Humanity and his little revolt, I should reveal the events leading up to it, starting with a childish attempt to slaughter our sovereign in cold blood. Robert was a timid character, far too lacking in the testes department – as can also be said for many other Norman males, or so at least I have heard... – to kill a man as mighty as Alexandros with his own blade. No, it would be much safer for him to instead to get some other hapless, inbred Norman fool to do the killing for him; that is after all the traditional Norman way.

But foolish though they may be, no son of a weasel or badger was foolish enough to attempt to kill a powerful monarch in cold blood on their own without co-conspirators to share the workload and blame – lest they be caught and their heads permanently severed from their bodies as is the custom in the civilised kingdoms. Robert, in spite of his questionable heritage and likely monorchism[3] was rather good at organising things, and in a short amount of time gathered a small yet effective gang of co-conspirators to do his bidding. They plotted to ambush dear Alexandros while hunting in his forests, luring him away from his hunting party before stabbing him to death in a nearby cave.

I quickly caught wind of this plan after one of my loyal informants performed the arduous duty of outdrinking a Norman at a local tavern, while keeping enough of a level head to interrogate, question and walk in a somewhat crooked line without falling over more than thrice head-first into the same roadside cesspool. The informant was well rewarded with a bath while I hastily informed the King's Master of the Hunt, Lord Mayor Antoon. Fortunately my message arrived in time...

kidnap.png

With the aid of such a brilliant and beautiful spymaster safeguarding King Alexandros from foolish schemes it was no wonder that Duke Robert saw the futility of further plots against the King's life. Unfortunately for the people of England Robert did not end his disloyal ambitions there, as his thoughts soon turned away from assassination to outright rebellion. What is it about the Norman's character that makes him as stubborn as a mule? Perhaps given that race of men's “colourful” history with weasels and badgers it is better if I do not know.

rebellion1.png

The respective forces of King Alexander, shown in green, and the rebels led by Duke Robert, shown in red, at the outbreak of the Norman Rebellion of 1104. Counties loyal to Duke Robert are highlighted in red, whereas those loyal to King Alexander remain unhighlighted.

If one needs any further proof of the insipid disloyalty and deceitfulness which is common to all men of Norman birth, it can be found in the actions of the men of Normandy on this day, whom almost to a man flocked to Robert's standard and raised arms against their rightful king, Alexandros. Only th small number of Normans on the English mainland remained loyal, most notably Gilbert of Norfolk. The Hollanders it must be recorded, showed nothing but the most loyal and fillial devotion to their monarch.

hollandforces_zpsff668cba.png

Loyalist forces in Holland prepare for re-deployment to rebel-occupied Dorset.

The Norman rebels, being almost universally men of low worth, slow intelligence, limited strength and questionable parentage fell rather easily to the might of the Loyalist forces. Without the strategic genius of William the Conqueror or hordes of continental mercenaries it is highly unlikely they would have ever conquered England in the first place.

centralengland_zps499d33b5.png

Otto leads his forces towards the walls of Northampton Castle while King Alexander and the Hollandmen continue to besiege Dorset. The army in Middlesex begins its long march towards Tintagel.

While things were going well for Alexandros in mainland England, the scurrilous Robert and his allies had mustered – it must be said – a rather impressive and sizeable professional army which threatened the English territories on the mainland in Holland. There was no question in Alexandros' mind as to whether or not his homelands must be relieved, but ever the model of patientia Alexandros refused to lift the siege. Holland was never far from his thoughts, but Holland could wait; Alexandros' mission was to pacify England.

centralengland1_zps49fa1eb8.png

As Robert made his way towards Holland via France, Alexander and Otto redoubled their efforts back in Britain.

Alexandros' persistence paid off when Dorset became the first of the rebel garrisons to fall. He marched north to aid Otto, where the fleet waited patiently to deliver their combined forces to Cornwall. Alexandros – prudent as ever – refused to needlessly risk the lives of his men – to whom he was more like a brother than a King – by storming the castle walls in a risky assault. There was much boredom to be had by all, including Alexandros no less, and so I felt that it was my duty as his wife to entertain him and keep his mind occupied with intellectual pursuits. I must admit that there was some selfishness involved on my part too, for back in my native Constantinople there were many books of questionable content which my parents deemed unsuitable for a frail and humble princess such as I to read. Many of the great classics of antiquity were thus as forbidden to me as the fruit of the tree of knowledge in the garden of Eden were to Eve, but now that I was free of their loving embrace I was free to peruse what had been kept from me. Alexandros was a loving and caring husband, who nurtured my thirst for knowledge and indeed we studied the classics together as husband and wife – in truth I think he was just as eager to study them as I.

At first we perused the works of the Venerable Bede...

bede_zpsec2b9b67.png

Next we devoured Homer and Virgil...

homer_zps3b832d70.png

And finally we recited Ovid...

ovid_zpsc18493cf.png

These sieges were indeed very long and Cornwall was the longest of all, and so unfortunately the brave garrisons in Holland fell one after the other. The messages which would flow in and out of our camp were each like a knife thrust through Alexandros' heart; such was the hurt they inflicted upon his soul. At night and in private he would weep for his fellow countrymen back home; I would weep for him. It was in these grey clouds of melancholia that our fourth child was born, a healthy baby boy. We named him Willem, a fine name for a future King, in honour of those Hollanders who sacrificed their lives in the name of their liege.

willem_zps84f31cb2.png

This next decision was for Alexandros quite a painful one, but for the greater good of his subjects it was one which had to be made. Rather than go forth and sally the garrisons in Holland, Alexandros, with a heavy heart, poised his forces like a dagger dangling towards the heart of Robert's now almost defenceless territory; Normandy. The theory was that if Normandy could be liberated, Robert's rebellion would lose all momentum and capitulate. It was not an easy decision for Alexandros to make, as it undoubtedly meant sacrificing a good many men, loyal and true, to the rebels. I... did my best to console him.

The child would be a boy named Hubert; a name allegedly chosen by one of King Alexander's courtiers because neither Alexander or his wife could think of a suitable name. Hubert was very much the “middle child” of the Reginar dynasty, and his exploits are mostly lost to history.

It would not be for another year that Normandy would be liberated and Alexandros would once again set foot upon the shores of his beloved Zeeland, and so Alexandros and I filled in the time between sieges and assaults by raising our young son, Alexandros and naming ourselves the Duke and Duchess of Somerset. Finally the moment of victory drew near when the bulk of Robert's army was annihilated at the Battle of Middelburg.
battleofmiddelberg_zps4fcdc582.png

This defeat was one too many a sour brew for Robert to swallow, and after several months of careful deliberation with his co-collaborators, he decided to raise the white flag of surrender. (as I am led to believe, is the customary action for people from his part of the world.) With such a long, dreary and utterly pointless war finally over, Alexandros could at last focus his energies on... more important pursuits, such as breaking free from the cold, iron grip of the Franks.. or further recitations of the poet Ovid...

Notes:
[1] Gameplay wise this is a very, very stupid thing to do, but in story terms I think there is a lot to be said for it.

[2] I have no idea why Crown Authority is so high.

[3] As nicely defined by wiki as: "the state of having only one testicle within the scrotum."

'recite Ovid' is a very nice euphemism, never heard that one before! Also, I love the not-at-all subtle digs she makes at the Normans (and the French, those cheese-eating surrender-monkeys!).

...under the inspired leadership of King William II the “Badger-pucker” (I feel that the mention of his true epithet would be much too shocking for my readers and certainly not the sort of thing a true lady of true virtue and noble birth such as myself should be mentioning in a history such as this. Even by Norman standards, I found his “exploits” a bit too much to take...)

Marvelous!

...And the fact the celebrant was shot in the eye while he was performing the service and happened to spill his eye-blood all over my precious white wedding dress did not in any way ease my tensions...

Alas for the sacrifices poor Anna must endure.

Bishop Damaes presided over the Christening, which proved to be wonderful service which warmed the hearts of all those who attended.

Thank goodness there was no repeat of the 'celebrations' which attended Anna's wedding!

With the aid of such a brilliant and beautiful spymaster safeguarding King Alexandros from foolish schemes it was no wonder that Duke Robert saw the futility of further plots against the King's life.

Modesty personified.

Great stuff, impressive gains made by Alexandros, his appointing Anna his Spy Master a particularly inspired move. This AAR does rather prove the old saying correct, behind every great man there is a great woman!

Greetings Everyone!

I've played through the next update, and I hope to have the much anticipated "English War of Independence" update finished by the end of the week. My goal is to do two updates before Christmas, hopefully that isn't too overly-ambitious. :D

MorningSIDEr: I'm sure Anna would appreciate your fine appraisal of her talents, I certainly appreciate your comments. :)

It was not an easy decision for Alexandros to make, as it undoubtedly meant sacrificing a good many men, loyal and true, to the rebels. I... did my best to console him.

It's heart warming to see how noble and kind that Anna is.;)

Others have already picked out the choice quotations (Anna's modesty in her abilities as a spymaster, the royal couple's penetrating study of Ovid, Anna's special talents at consoling Alexander), so I will just say that that was a lovely update with a fine rebellion smashed and your dashing King almost dead.

Oh, I also enjoyed the description of Anna's brave informant outdrinking a Norman - richly rewarded with a bath. :)

Merry Christmas Everyone!

I was originally planning to make this a two-parter, but in the end I felt it best to wait a little and release it all as one update; think of it as my little Christmas present to you, my ever loyal readers! ;)

Unfortunately the Christmas/New Year season being the hectic time of year it is, a further update may not be possible for some time to come. I do hope I will at least get one more update done before the year is out, but don't hold me to that.

As always, thanks to all of you for your comments and for patiently following this AAR (and especially for those of you who have followed some of my previous AARs as well: Avindian, MorningSIDEr, Nikolai, Omen, Scholar and Stuyvesant.) Thank you very much!

Wishing you all a merry Christmas and all the very best for 2013,
The Author. :)

Just as a lion cannot willingly submit himself to a donkey or a great oak tree bow to the humble sunflower, a great king cannot serve a petty one anymore than a mighty nation may pay tribute to a weaker one; such are the laws of nature.

The “Holy” “Roman” “Emperor” Heinrich IV was a man of such cruel and impious depravities, so lacking in moral virtue and yet possessing the most wicked and insidious vices in such abundance that even the lowliest of donkeys would refuse to bow down and submit to him, let alone a great lion like Alexandros. To continue to be subject to such a man would be to bathe in his malevolence, and no man as righteous and upright as Alexandros could bear that; no people of true Roman stock as industruious and proud as the English could bear that either. Even the Normans could not tolerate such tyranny – well that is to say that most Normans could not tolerate it, as I shall explain further...

After the Great Norman Rebellion, Duke Robert was charged with high treason and, thanks in great part to the most talented and dedicated intelligence network in all Christendom, was captured alive and brought before his sovereign in chains.

imprisonrobert_zps66974526.png

Never the sort of man to lose sight of the big picture, Alexandros did not want to make such a man a Norman martyr so soon after a mass uprising and therefore sentenced Duke Robert to the harshest and most severe punishment he could deliver short of sending him to the land of fire and brimstone in which he so deservedly belongs. Instead, Duke Robert was to lose all his lands and tiles, plus have his private estates and assets requisitioned by the crown. As a son of the great King William, his name still carried much weight in Norman circles and so sanctuary was not hard to find. He married a Norman woman a third his age and of lowly birth, who bore him no less than three children, and lived out the rest of his days as a courtier[1] to Count William of Mortain.

banishrobert_zps3669c848.png

Duke Robert's punishment must have put the fear of God into the Norman aristocracy for soon after they heard the news they shook and trembled with fear. If a Norman lord as powerful as Robert, as influential as Robert and with such a pedigree as Robert could so easily lose his lands and titles so could they. So selfish and desperate to hold onto their paltry holdings were these petty nobles that some were prepared to not merely overlook the most cruel and wicked deeds produced by the German tyrant, but to swear fealty to him!

Unfortunately as Alexandros was also de jure a vassal of the Kaiser, there was little that Alexandros and I could do to stop them serving him directly. Alexandros did the best he could to limit the Kaiser's perverted influence in his lands by laying claim to as many of the vacant ducal lands titles as he could, lest Heinrich claim them for himself.[2]

dukeofbedfordandkent_zps3fff31eb.png

In order to keep the upstart nobles of Normandy in check, a powerful Norman loyalist presence was required in Normandy to influence opinion and above all, put dissenters in their place. Alexandros wisely appointed Gilbert of Norfolk – a Norman and loyalist hero of the Great Norman Rebellion –
as the new Duke of Normandy. Although their were many... advantages to having a man like Gilbert serve a Duke of Normandy, let it not be thought that his appointment was made solely for political purposes. Duke Gilbert was both a staunch ally and a loyal friend to Alexandros and to myself, whose premature death a few months after his appointment shocked and saddened the two of us.

gilbertdukeofnormandy_zpsddab7531.png

Together with Duke Gilbert and a small band of Norman loyalists, I worked tirelessly to limit secessionist influence within Normandy. I was not wholly successful – as the nobles of Eu did indeed defect to the false Emperor – but the fact that we were able to keep most of Normandy in line is a testament to my hard work and diligence.

Meanwhile elsewhere in mainland Europe, Alexandros was working hard in the shadows and behind closed doors mobilising support amongst disgruntled vassals across the Empire for a mass rebellion against German rule. He found ample support for secession in the Italian states, in particular Lombardy and Tuscany, where Duchess Matilda, a woman possessing grace, intelligence and the epitome of true Christian virtue, proved to be a most ardent supporter and ally.

The catalyst for the great war of independence however came not from King Alexandros or any of his schemes, nor from any of his allies in the independence movement, but from an act of sheer stupidity on Heinrich's part. The King of Bohemia, hitherto a loyal vassal of the German Kaiser, was arrested and charged with suspicion to assassinate one of the “Emperor's” sons – likely a baseless accusation levelled at him by an ambitious and jealous rival. The Duke of Bohemia was to be escorted to Nassau to face punishment but while travelling through the forests of Plsen he escaped from his captors, allegedly by strangling his bailiffs with his bare hands while one of them went out to... relieve himself behind a nearby shrub, and fled on foot while barefooted, with his arms chained together and while wearing nothing but a white loincloth to his capital in Praha. Or so the legend goes.

Back in Praha, Duke Borijov raised his standard in revolt and understandably so given the inhuman treatment he suffered at the hands of his liege. There is no doubting however that the odds of a tiny little Duchy like Bohemia holding out against the strength of the entire “Holy Roman Empire” were slim at best – that is to say roughly the equivalent chance of a snowflake surviving an entire summer in the Holy Land. Perhaps there is something deep within the Bohemian psyche which lends itself to defiance against insurmountable odds?

bohemiarebels_zps0e3694ec.png

Alexandros and I both knew that this was out chance. With the false Emperor's men marching towards Praha the time was right to raise our own standard of defiance against German tyranny. I got in touch with the spymasters and diplomats of our allies within the independence movement, and together we agreed that now was the time to act. The rulers of these duchies, counties, kingdoms and petty republics signed a joint declaration demanding their independence, and threatening war against Nassau if these demands were not met. Unfortunately, reason was not a quality Heinrich possessed in abundance; or indeed at all.

blackmail_zpsf97b531e.png

King Alexandros had the foresight and good sense to mobilise his levies before hearing Heinrich's reply, thus giving him a slight edge over his foes.

england_zps4a80e454.png

Combined English forces at the outbreak of the Anglo-Italian War of Independence.

Our Italian allies however were a little slower than we were in mobilising their own levies, much to our detriment...

HRE_zpse05ceae0.png

Combined HRE and Italian forces at the outbreak of the Anglo-Italian War of Independence.

King Alexandros immediately appointed himself head of the English Army, and led his forces to capture the strategically important town of Eu, formerly part of English Normandy, as a staging point along the invasion of the false Emperor's western possessions. Here he bravely lay siege to the mighty palisades of Eu castle while his Italian allies and the Bohemians were fighting and dying (but mostly dying) fighting the bulk of the Kaiser's armies in the east.

battleforeu_zpsfdf8b9ff.png

Alexander's forces encircle and destroy Holy Roman forces in Eu while Norman auxiliaries sit on the sidelines.

As a most loyal, devoted and supportive wife, I naturally followed my dear Alexandros on campaign once more. Sieges are of course long, drawn-out affairs which leave one in a state of seemingly perpetual boredom before the inevitable breach and final assault. This of course does give one much time to contemplate and read, and Alexandros and I quickly resumed out intense study of the verses of Ovid.

pregnant2_zps3c328406.png

The child would turn out to be a boy, who had the good fortune to have been born on the very day the last garrison in “Holy Roman” Normandy surrendered. To commemorate this victory, we followed the old Roman convention and named him Kristof Francius after his father's victory in France.

kristofborn_zps6aaafd25.png

As Alexandros was poised to invade the city of Utrecht on the undefended west flank of the evil empire, our brave and loyal ally Duchess Matilda was doing her best to repel the Kaiser and prevent his forces from marching into occupied Italy..

utrecht_zps4a64275a.png

Our moods were somewhat brightened by some good news from the home front, apparently some documents were found – most legitimate documents and unquestionably not the forgeries of a brilliant if not slightly disloyal Norman chancellor – in our Chancellor's study of all places, which gave the King of England a rightful claim on the County of Powys! The discovery of such documents was cause for feasting and celebration back home, as the ink had not yet dried when the hundred year old document was discovered while the parchment looked as fresh as if it had literally been written on the day before; this was clearly a sign of divine intervention, and the claims were consecrated as a holy relic: The Sacred Parchment of the Undrying Ink.

claimpowys_zps4dea716b.png

Despite Anna's rather desperate protestations to the contrary, most modern historians do believe that these and subsequent claims discovered by Alexander's chancellors were rather amateurish forgeries.

The discovery of this holy relic was cause for much jubilance in occupied Utrecht too, private jubilance... between Alexandros and I.

pregnant3_zpse14c2dad.png

As they say in English aristocratic circles, make love and war...

From Utrecht our levies marched to the neighbouring lands of Cleves. It was there where I gave birth to our third daughter, Margaret. Unlike her infant brother whose birth was met by victory in France, Margaret's birth was heralded by a peasant revolt in Northampton.

pregnant4_zps5e674772.png

The Anglo-Italian War of Independence was not quite the bloody affair it could have been, at least not for us the English; the Tuscans, Bohemians and Lombardians did not fare quite as well as we did. By wisely and courageously waiting out most of the war in the strategically important (and surprisingly luxurious) village of Eu, King Alexandros was able to save hundreds of Saxon, Briton, Hollander and Norman lives. Faced with an aggressive and powerful English army attacking from the west, a brave and valiant combined Italian force thrusting from the south and a defiant Bohemian force holding firm in the east, the false Emperor's forces were overstretched, making his victory impossible. After the successful occupation of Utrecht, the Electors within the false Rome began to squirm like Normans with fear of losing their precious titles, and began to make noises at the “imperial” capital of Nassau. They were influential enough – or rather, “Emperor” Heinrich was craven enough – to force the false Emperor to sue for peace, likely against his own wishes to fight on. It was not however a true surrender, a surrender from the head rather than one from the heart. This false Caesar kept his claims on the newly independent English and Italian territories and would not likely give them up without force. The event of a second English War of Independence seemed a likely prospect indeed...

That's a nice spin on things. :) Clearly, we'll see the recovery of many more of these relics in the as-yet to be discussed parts of Alexander's reign, even more proof of the divine favor bestowed on him. ;)

That's a nice spin on things. :) Clearly, we'll see the recovery of many more of these relics in the as-yet to be discussed parts of Alexander's reign, even more proof of the divine favor bestowed on him. ;)

Indeed we shall, or not, depending on how good Alexander's Chancellors are at fabricating claims! The idea of portraying a fabricated claim as a holy relic idea came from it being Christmastime. :)
