considering that the ai can;t fight it's way out of a wet paper bag, even when given absurd bonuses, it definitely belongs here in the bug reports section.

fix/work around: install starnet ai.

this is mostly a joke post but i think that the ai is in such a bad place that i am only half joking about the ai being one giant bug

i mean seriously i know coding an ai for a game this complex isn't easy, but if modders who can only access part of the code can make a better ai than you... you may wish to hire said modders to try and improve it. not trying to offend anyone, but it is pretty much a universally acknowledged fact that starnet ai is better than vanilla.

There are several issues with the AI which makes them completely broken. I could recently beat the War in Heaven 2.5M FE leader with only a 40k fleet, for this general reasons:
  • The AI can't handle transport fleets, it is always a massacre
  • The AI can't really support his allies (that is still acceptable)
  • The AI not defend its home planets, if so then only at last
Maybe it is because the FE are decadent, but they bombarded with the whole (2.5M) fleet a single planet forever (because AI can't handle bombard stances). Because they got no more support of transport fleets (for mentioned reasons), because they home planets are already under siege of only a 40k fleet and a single transport fleet!!

There are much more "minor bugs" but which could also completely break an empire (e.g. the endless system loop).

(If someone want, I can give the save game. but I think this could happen near always)

If you've got a save file in which the AI is solely using their fleet to bombard a single planet as described, I'd appreciate that.

Unfortunately only shortly before the end (of the FE; they had all of their planets just shortly before).
PS: loads without mod but I actually used a few.

I am satisfied, how the AI handles it s armies. The fleets escorting them is way better than in the past, where the armies even died to single outposts.

The lack of supporting from the AI for it s Allies is an issue. It is definitely a weakpoint if the ally doesnt care, while his defense pact neighbour is overrun and just continues moving into enemy territory. Also the "allied fleets follow" button not working is a Problem, because it destroys the way for a Player to influence the AI fleets inside of a Fed to start a combined attack or defense. Sure - if the Player is not clever it might lead the AI fleets to get suicided, but usually the Player is more clever than the AI.

The Ai only caring for Claims and Systems the enemy claimed and occupied is defenitely a huge weakpoint of the Ai. If the enemy fleet occupys the starbase of the homeworld or certain planets, which have a Population over a defined amount, the AI defenitely should stop it s attacks and rush to Rescue the own planets. It really is not good if the AI successfully manages to conquer a small worthless border planet/System, but meanwhile it s economy and reinforcements are destroyed (Especially for an total war empire this means Game Over). Claims are fine, but they shouldnt be all that matters.

The endless System loop with main fleets flying back and forth between 2 Systems is defenitely currently a really big Problem. It is no fun, if half of the Empires in your Galaxy take 10 years of war, before they finally start Breaking free of the loop and attack. Often they only manage to break free after the enemy has already taken lots of Systems, despite their own fleet being stronger, or on par.

I really dont understand, why the AI bombardment stances were changed to only allow selective. It unnecessary slows down the AI in wars, while trying to conquer planets and gives the Player an unfair Advantage (which the playere really doesnt Need, the Player usually is smarter than the AI).

The AI of FE and AFE suffers from all that in a more obvious way. The reason for that is that the AFE usually fights bigger alliances / feds and heavily depends on it s core Systems. As total war empire their inability to rush to defend their core Systems, while being on a "successfull" conquest trip is the main reason, why they Always fail the war in heaven. The other reason is their Focus to priorize the other AFE over the alliance of nonaligned powers, they should Focus on the closest enemy empire and not send their fleets all over the Galaxy, making them unable to come back in time for a Rescue or hold any conquered territory. Also as soon the core planets starbases are occupied the AFE fleets rather bomb planets, waiting for an destroyed/non-existing army than doing anything useful, like getting those starbases back. There is a reason why most AFE die, while still having it s main fleet mostly intact.

One problem that definitely needs addressing is the AI fleets getting stuck in a loop back and forth between 2 systems forever. I was one of the first to post this a day after federations, it's still being posted, i've seen a few recently, none have any QA replies on them. I at least want to know if you are aware of this bug?

that's one of the biggest issues, especially since for reasons beyond my comprehension starnet doesn't fix that issue.luckily with starnet it is at least fairly rare, I've only seen it once with starnet enabled.

Every report on the this forum is read by the QA team, I've been replying if we either need additional clarification on the issue reported or to remind folks to include a save with the bug report - which that report does, so that's great :)
