Chapter 11: In which France proves to be extremely irritating, to nobody's surprise
If you thought the last update was boring and had too much peace, you'll love this one!
1903
The present war is France, Russia, Switzerland, Algeria, and the Ottoman Empire vs. Austria-Hungary, Italy, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Obviously, Austria is my target, as you can see here:
My ideal goal from this war is to put B-H in my sphere. I learn something unpleasant right away:
Yes, there's only a one tech difference between us, but that's a big tech. This war will be very, very bloody. (Note: this screenshot is from a later battle, but they have gas from the start of the war). Our first clash comes in August, in which I handily defeat a tiny three brigade stack in Ternopil. Thanks mostly to gas, I suffer roughly 25 to 50% more casualties in roughly equal forces, even in battles I win. Memel cores in October. I finish Anti-Rationalism in November and immediately start on Military Directionism, either to get gas attack or gas defense as soon as possible. Here's the situation as of November:
By December 8, we've won enough battles (total +16% warscore, a lot of that from France beating up Italy) that I add my own war goal.
To give you an example of some of these slugfests, here's a battle from December 21:
This army should be eliminated, but I didn't close the pocket because I missed a province. Foolish of me, really. If I were playing this again, I would definitely have focused more on closing pockets in this war. Oh well, such is life. I start taking provinces at the end of December.
1904
In January, things are going well enough that I start justifying a new war goal.
The UK creates Malaysia in February (the light blue):
Here's the war as a whole in March:
Everything is going great, people are happy (unless you're Austro-Hungarian), birds singing, etc. Then, of course, this happens:
Better generalship and gas won the day here. Still, we're winning the war, and that's what matters. I get caught for 2 infamy in May. I've got that big army that just beat me completely encircled, so my revenge is coming. At the end of May, to put the screws to Austria even worse, I blockade their coastline.
I actually technically lose the battle in the shot above, but the casualties are all wooden ships. Austria also has more naval techs (12 to 8), but I do have more ships at present. So, the war continues with more horrible, horrible butchery, but we're winning easily. I should be one step closer to forming Yugoslavia and...
I hate France so much. It's even more stupid than that, even:
That's right: Italy fires the "I don't want to be in your sphere" decision the second after the war is finished. My contributions to this stupid war consist entirely of moral support (while secretly hoping Italy gives France a good sharp kick where the sun doesn't shine) and possibly vodka. I do win a couple of naval battles -- Italy isn't very good -- so I'm not totally sandbagging. I get Military Directionism in September and start on Steel Railroad. A quick look at the French front at the end of September shows Italy is kicking France in a very sensitive place; that's what you get for selling me out, France. In October, I have to cancel all subsidies -- I'm losing money thanks to the war. This cycle will continue until the end of the AAR -- open factories, subsidize, start losing money, cancel subsidies, factories go bankrupt.
In December, UK annexes Siam.
1905
Now here's a sensible war I don't mind getting dragged into:
The USA is probably my most loyal and helpful ally in this AAR. Plus, anybody who has ever played Vicky 2 hates the UK, so I will also back UK getting knocked down a peg or two. As predicted, the British invade Morocco (which is really, really looking like a bad decision on my part). Torun cores in April, and I start on Army NCO Training. I can't contribute much to this war either, partially because of distance but mostly because the UK is still a very formidable navy. In May, I get yet another call to war, one I can and and do help with:
The USA war goal is for southern British Columbia. I'll have to push hard against Germany, more because I hate Germany more than because I like France. I beat the British in a minor battle in Alaska in May. Here's the German front in June:
At least the Germans don't have gas (yet):
Things are going well, but I'm starting to suffer manpower shortages, so I mobilize in October. Then, in November, this happens:
If there were assassins in Vicky 2, I would have killed Ludwig Fritsch. He's +4/+4, and by the way, I think the Germans have gas too. I do the only sensible thing:
This is why you don't sell out Russia, France. Fascism starts in the UK at the end of 1905. That's both Communism and Fascism originating in the UK this time around.
1906
I finish Army NCO Training in February and start on Indirect Artillery Fire. I upgrade 39 factories at a single click, to the tune of over £200,000. Of course, I have over £10 million in the bank. I dump another £50,000 into some capitalist projects, mostly railroads but some factory expansion too. To help out the USA, on April 1, I send them war subsidies (to the tune of nearly £2000 a day). That's right, reverse Lend-Lease! In June, the USA adds a second wargoal -- the release of what's left of Quebec. By the end of 1906, I finish Indirect Artillery Fire and start on Infiltration.
1907
Conservatives win the 1907 election in a landslide, with 95% of the vote. The USA makes peace in February, getting southern British Columbia but not releasing Quebec, which is a reasonable return for the war. I get Gas Attack in March, which means if nothing else, both sides will be equally bloody in a future war. UK releases Australia in March, and in April, France signs a white peace with Italy.
So, to recap: France starts two wars, first to get Italy in their sphere and second to keep Italy in their sphere. The first succeeds, but at the cost of stabbing me in the back. The second fails, because France is an idiot. It also loses Alsace-Lorraine, mostly because I don't try very hard, since I'm already irritated with France. That is some
brilliant French diplomacy.
I'm going to be updating here again, hopefully, on Thursday; I'd love to finish this AAR before HOD releases, although that seems unlikely.
