Before the addition of non-aggression pacts and compulsory alliances, we had a system that worked fairly well. You could not join wars that would put you and an ally in a current war on opposing sides. It worked.
Now, it does not.
I am playing the King of Sicily who, through an alliance, was brought in to a war defending the King of Lotharingia against a large faction revolt. The King of Italy was also an ally of Lotharingia, so Sicily and Italy are allies (defenders) in that war.
Then the King of Italy attempts to revoke the duchy of Lombardy from the duke and the duke refuses. I hold claims to lands in Italy, so it is in my interest to see the current King of Italy, who has many allies, unseated. So, I look at the diplomacy panel and see that I have an option to join the revolting duke's war against the tyranny of the King of Italy. I wonder what will happen...
As you can see in these images, I (Sicily) am on the same side as Italy in one war and opposing sides in another. You can clearly see our armies fighting - there are no other armies present - it's Italy and Sicily fighting despite Italy's appearance as an ally. I can not understand the logic behind this new alliance system and the underlying mechanics that allow for such situations to manifest, particularly when the previous system worked so much better.
