Hi everybody!

I suppose you are wondering what the point is. I am too. Why clog the forum with another, theme-free Sweden AAR, this one only five years long?

Good question. I play EU2, though I am rusty, and I read the AARs. I would try one myself. But my attention span is short. And my computer likes to corrupt save files. So basically, I would have to be glued to my computer taking notes, which would be unpleasant. So I tested myself out by writing this five year long baby AAR, about a certain Nordic country.

Game: Europa Universalis II, v 1.07 (I think), Mac version.
Country: Sweden
Scenario: 1419
Mods: None, nothing works for Macs
Writing Style: Concise

If you haven't left yet, I will now start the AAR. Don't worry, it'll be done soon.

.....

THE ONLY CHAPTER
In which Sweden, guided by the reasonably competent Unionsrad and the reasonably competent the_shy_kid, gains very little, save a tax collector in Stockholm. What were you expecting?

I look at the map. Sweden is a poor country, particularly since it sends half its taxes to Denmark. We are allied with Norway and Denmark. Everybody hates Novogrod.

The army and navy are losing me money. I cut the maintenance to 50 percent for both. Luckily, mutinies aren't simulated in this game, or this session would be five years shorter.

In addition, I reduce the size of my armies. Here they are.

Gota Livgard. 2,000 men in Vastergotland.
Svea Livgard. 6,000 men in Svealand. Not enough cavalry.
Nylands Brigad. 6,000 men in Nyland.

I notice Novogrod at war with a bunch of Russian states. They have some provinces that could theoretically be nice to have, but they aren't worth the effort.

In May 1419, I send my 2 merchants to Kurland.

May 8, Denmark gets all bellicose and declares war on the Hanseatic League, and they want my help. I give it to them, and increase army maintanence to full. Look boys, you're getting paid!

May 14, I raise war taxes. Stability suffers. (-1. Drat.)

May 27, one of my 2 merchants sets up shop in Kurland.

July 19, the Svea Lifgard boards the navy, and heads for Holstein.

Meanwhile, income has increased to a heady 0.14 ducats/month.

On September 21st, my Swedes set up a siege in Holstein. I'd rather let the Danes have that, though. I have visions of that Center of Trade in Mecklemburg dancing in my head. Unfortunately, the Danish are already beseiging it.

However, not long after, some brave German types drive away the Danes, who join me in Holstein. Wonderful.

I wait for a while before attacking Mecklemburg though, because Bremen keeps on wafting big armies back and forth....

Finally, on February 1st, 1420, the Swedish army gets their own personal siege in Lubeck. Which lasts maybe a few seconds. A big army of Mecklemburgians descends on their hometown. I immediately depart to minimize losses.

I'm going to need some more soldiers. Around March 5th, I recruit some in Vastergotland, and position the navy for their delivery.

Maybe I could make this easier by appeasing some of the angry little German states. No luck. My white peace is turned down by Bremen.

On the 1st of June, there is a breakthrough in infrastructure. My Swedish researchers discover that we can tax peasants more if we have tax collectors. Relishing this news, I promote one in Svealand. (Infra 1. wOOt.)

On the 11th of July, my new troops are ready. The Gota Lifgard (4000/4000) is delivered to Jutland, where it is merged with my existing army. Wanna mess, Germans?

On August 20th, my shiny new army attacks Lubeck once more. Victory is mine..... for a little while.

Five days later, a Bremen army attacks. Oh dear.

On August 30th, a pleasant interlude, in the form of a Diplomatic Move that bumps up relations with Magdeburg.

On the 10th of September, my proud Swedish army retreats from Mecklemburg. The proud victors are 943 cavalrymen from Bremen. How humiliating.

By October 4th, the Danish have taken control of Holstein. They annex it.

This leaves them with a whole heap of soldiers (25k or something. I forget.) to send to Mecklemburg. They lay siege. The Swedes get ready to go home.

I observe that Novogrod is at war with Muscovy, Tver, and Pskov. You know, those Russians aren't nice people. (No offense intended to modern day Russians.) In addition, the puny Duchy of Athens has 16,000 troops.

June 1421: We have a tax collector! Meanwhile, I adjust religious tolerance, which I had somehow forgotten to do earlier.

In August, the Danish take Mecklemburg.

I take advantage and offer Mecklemburg, as leader of the alliance, white peace. On the 10th of September, I am out of the war.

In October, my stability increases to +1. I needed that.

With troop maintainence back at 50%, I generate income at the rate of 0.03 ducats/month.

On the 8th of January 1422, Denmark accepts peace with Mecklemburg on the following terms: 5 ducats in indemnities to Denmark. Denmark gains military access. Mecklemburg becomes Denmark's vassal.

March 1, the Byzantine government falls, getting them out of their war with the Ottomans without loss. How lucky of them.

On March 11th, a Paul Bellizer von Russdorf rises to the throne in a sizeable portion of the Hanseatic League.

On the 18th of April, the nobles get greedy, and want export licenses of some sort. I give it to them. They are happy, and I lose 50 ducats.

May 30, Granada becomes a Portugese vassal. Castile may be a little angry. (NOBODY EXPECTS THE PORTUGESE INQUISITION!)

I observe that England and France are at peace, with the same borders as in 1419.

On April 1st, 1423, things get more stable (+2.) I am pleased.

On around the 30th of June, I grab some random villagers, and send them to Lappland.

On the 29th of August, the colonists succeed.

I notice Suzdal has taken swaths of the Golden Horde.

On September 1st, I make a domestic policy change (centralization to 3.) Stability suffers. (+1.)

On the 21st of December, I send 6 merchants to attack Mecklemburg en masse.

On the 9th of January 1424, there is a scandal at the court. Relations with Hannover dip, and the Unionsrad loses its diplomatic touch for 4 months.

On the 21st, the results of my merchants:
2 succeed
2 compete away other merchants
2 just sit around and drink beer

On July 7th, Poland's war with the Hansa, which seems to have been going on for some time, concludes. Prussia pays 32 ducats in indemnities.

August 13th, Lithuania vassalizes Poland. Go them!

On October 1st, my stability climbs to +2.

And then, on December 30th, I quit. Victory points stand at 22. The leader is China, with 131.

THE END

How did you like it? Should I try something longer?

Why don't you buy a PC?

I haven't found PC EU2 in stores. And I'm lazy. Thus, through a series of chain reactions, a five-year AAR disliked by its only reviewer is created.

It seems there's just no getting away from it. Apparently people just like L-O-O-O-O-NG AARs - the longer the better in fact. However, you can of course stretch 5 years of gameplay into a very long AAR - take Tolstoy's "War and Peace" for example. OK, he wasn't playing EU2 (or maybe he was???), but you see what I mean. ;)
