Happy New Year to all! And what better way to end 2013 than beginning to recognize the finest AARs in AARland for the second half of 2013?

The procedure is simple: any AAR that has been updated at least once between 1 July 2013 and 31 December 2013 is eligible. You may vote for up to four AARs per thread, and the top four will receive the glory and honor of being the very best AARs of that category until the next installment of the ACAs on 1 April 2014. Voting here will continue until 31 January 2014.

Please be sure to include a link to the AAR, as well as the title and author!

This thread is only for AARs which do not have a dedicated thread: at present, EUIII, EUIV, V2, CK2, HOI3, and DH all have dedicated threads. This is for everything else.

Fire away, and may the best AARs win!

I can think of MOTE and Rome games that deserve awards...

Don't worry, I will be. I just haven't got my ballots together yet. :)

It takes a special courage to keep updating on the boards people don't frequent as much, or anymore. Feedback and comments get rarer, and you start wondering if you're posting to an empty room. I had a taste of this when EU2 switched to EU3 and it was a little sad watching the community move on. Kudos to anyone and everyone keeping the 'classics' alive.

1. Poland EU1 by Range (EU1)
* Special credit for keeping the game that started it all alive, and a fun read beside.

2. Between a Rock and a Hard Place by Lofman (Rome)
* A fun scenario of trying to stay alive surrounded by huge powers.

3. In the Shadow of Greatness: Etienne's War by Seelmeister (MOTE)
* When you deal with what is unapologetically a wargame with fighting that spans an entire continent, keeping your narrative to one character can be a challenge. Seelmeister pulls it off.

Lastly, and most notably:

4. A Special Providence by Director (Vic1)
* This AAR started in 2007, and finished in August. 'Providence' is a powerful, flowing epic narrative whose style reminds one of AARland's rich history. Well done, sir.

I'll have to cast in a vote for the only active Victoria 1 AAR at the moment, the excellent Deo Vindice - A CSAAR! by Ben Kenobi.:)

Two of the must reads AARs:

Between a Rock and a Hard Place by Lofman (Rome)
pure game play and pure fun ... showcases why Rome remains such an addictive game to play

A Special Providence by Director (Vic1)
probably the last of the great narrative AARs, even if you have never played V1, if you want a deeper insight into the dynamics of the nineteenth century (and a cracking good story) read this

We have five winners, thanks to tie votes!

Tied for third (or fourth, as you like) are Range's Poland and Pigbin's A Bloody War or a Sickly Season. Each received two votes.

Tied for second are Director's A Special Providence and Seelmeister's In the Shadow of Greatness. Each received three votes.

Finally, the very best "other" AAR for the second half of 2013, a very worthy winner, is Lofman's Between a Rock and a Hard Place, who earned five votes.

Congratulations to all the winners! Join us in April for the 2014 1st quarter ACAs, and in the meantime, won't you join us recognizing the best completed AARs in AARland (and two brand new awards as well)? (There are links in my signature!)

Thank you Avindian for organising this, and a huge thank you to all who voted for 'In the Shadows of Greatness'.

Congratulations to Lofman for a fantastic AAR, and to all the other nominated writers too.
