What is your "that one tech"? The one tech that you need, and your overall plan depends on, but you just can't seem to roll?
Mine is Starhold, consistently. In game after game, Starhold keeps coming up much, much later than I'd like, sometimes even into the late 90s. Had one appear once in 2318.
Robotic workers also sometimes appears "late", but mostly because those really shine early, and any tardiness hurts a lot.

Note: This is not a serious "omg buff weights" thread. Just share your curious happenstances and chill.

It's the single most useful tech on board for me.

For me it was the Admin cap boosting one. Playing the Megachurch the Universal Church of Eled (ask me about our outreach program we have 121 years to make it happen!) I had a beutifull eucimopolice (sp) world all picked out but I was fighting to stay under cap and the techs just would not show up.

Ecumenopolis.
Naval cap techs are another bane for me. Not Fleet capacity. Naval. I often find myself with outsized fleet cap, because I'm thinking I'll either get anchorages, or pick up the tech along the way, but it's always sooo long until that happens...

Well until they patch them you are actually better off disabling them, because AI pathfinding through them makes the game stutter horribly.


For me is usually Starhold/bigger ship chassis. In 2.2 however the genetic ones that boost Pop Growth might be even more useful than bigger ships.

Oh, i loathe how the tech for making Rare Resources out of Minerals show up BEFORE i learn to extract natural deposits of said resources. Every damn time.

Same here. The ability to use and build gateways is so useful that as soon as I have the tech available, I take it because it makes movement Inside your empire so easier.

Gene Clinics.
Early Amenities + pop growth. Build it often as first building while I am resettling the new colony to 10 pops instantly. Yes its only a few % but if you keep it running at dozens of planets for a hundred years it adds up quite a lot. And you need some Amenities anyway.

Some game I get it as second or third tech some game it takes surprisingly long (I know I need Genome Mapping as prerequisite)
I am now choosing +15% society research on my species mainly for the popgrowth techs and such to get them more early. Other times I always took Engineering but not in 2.2. Don't care for lategame techs I just take all of them but their not so special for me as early game stuff.

I really wish we could re-roll our tech possibilities for, say 25 Influence.

Gave up on rolling that a long time ago - voidborne -> Master builders or no mega it seems.
This was my normal plan in 2.1, because I'd usually be building habitats anyways, but now it seems like they're not that useful when there are plenty of planets and even a size 10 with lowish habitability is still a great deal. Now Voidborne feels like a wasted perk that just says "you can now research mega-engineering if you pick another perk"

Admin cap techs. I always try to have all the civics or techs, but its always not enough and I end up with modifiers like +100% leader cost. Honestly, for me admin cap is too low rn

Robots are a hit and miss, but one tech I consistently get way too late is Destroyers. Most of the time, I don't see it until the second half of the 23rd century :(

(Edit: I realise that I don't really fit the OP's question as Destroyers isn't really a tech I *need* for my playstyle, but damn, is it irritating)

Robotic workers also sometimes appears "late", but mostly because those really shine early, and any tardiness hurts a lot.

haha my first game in 2.2 i didn't have coil guns til 2300 or so. i had really weird progression that game.
