Despite my best efforts to get into 2.2.x Stellaris, I just can't hack it anymore. Don't get me wrong, I did (900+ hours worth) and still do love this game, but the gameplay has just gotten far too slow for me. The amount of time I have to spend balancing the admittedly interesting economic system detracts far too much from the things I used to enjoy about the game (conquest, diplomacy and exploration, namely). The AI and myself are regularly massacred even by midgame L-Gate Crises due to the limits of fleet cap and alloy production, which require far too much time investment to overcome. Performance issues for anything over a medium sized galaxy just add to the slowdown. This could certainly just be me having an old dog mindset and not wanting to have to relearn a game I already enjoyed. Had the same problem with Darkest Dungeon when they took out stalling as a META. No hard feelings, and this game was definitely worth my time and financial investment, but it just isn't any more.

I understand what you're going through as I had to deal with this a lot. If you bought Stellaris 1.0 you bought into a "casual space-based 4x" game with some quasi-unique features. Stellaris 2.0 isn't even the same game and 2.2.x is a completely different animal.

In short Stellaris 1.0 has evolved from a casual very basic 4x game into something much more involved and is inching closer to a "traditional Paradox game" that has strong grand strategy elements to it. This is likely great for the die-hard Paradox fans but likely isn't something that's going over as well with the more casual gamers that Stellaris 1.0 built up.

Dunno why people complain about alloy production, I usually have more problems with raw minerals. It’s very easy to wield an army that smashes vanilla AI.

Glavius’ AI is a bit tricker, but their large armies help with crises.

For me what's really disappointing is the lack of quality in the updates. I actually really like the game design choices and think it's going into the right direction in this regard, but there should be more of a balance between polishing/bug-fixing and adding content, even if it means that new content takes more time to make it into the game.

2.0 turned warfare into waiting game. 2.2 turned economy development into waiting game. In 2.0 i started to play tall because i was not able to enjoy warfare anymore. In 2.2, despite all awesome changes, i stopped to enjoy playing even tall. I tried, but with this slow pace it's just not enjoyable for me.
I would really like some kind of "warfare speed"/"economy growth speed" sliders so i can enjoy my fast paced parties again.

Well.
As I already mentioned somewhere, Stellaris is becoming better and better in design with every expansion, but it lacks of polishing more and more.
The 2 main current problems are:
1. Perfomance issues.
2. Bad AI. Both sector AI and AI empires.

Fix perfomance - and that 'slow pace' problems mostly go away.
Fix Sector AI - and players would not have to manage every single planet personally, dealing only with some main planets and larger scale things like fleet movement, macroeconomics, politics etc. No need in pausing every month for 2-3 times would increase the game pace very much.
Fix empire AI - and the game will become challenging without 'cheating' AI empires. Very much needed improvement.

There are many more things to fix or improve, but these 3 are already implemented core features that do not work as intended by design.
Fix them and most complains will be gone - no time for them when u are busy enjoying your game ;)

I can see where you are coming from. I'm mostly done with 2.2 for the moment as well as the performance is too terrible and some of the design decisions need to be worked on to make them better. I do think when they come back they will start working on systems that will make everything easier to manage. After all one of the main reasons they said they wanted to get rid of the tile system was because it was too micro heavy. Obviously on the current system with more than 12 worlds the new system is very micro heavy and I can see them making a better sector management AI and more options on how you want the AI to run the sector. At least hope they do otherwise playing wide will forever be a pain.

The new director said they'd take time for polish after the holidays. Hopefully that and the diplomacy rework in the further future will help improve the AI that is struggling badly for some of y'all.

All the bugs and such will be fixed in due time. I personalilly love the new economy and systems (especially the modding potential)

Im mostly utterly disappointed on the performance area.

I used to be able to play this game up to the 3000s with small lag, but now 50 years into the game and it completely grinds to a halt.

It completely borked the game for me and now I dont know if Im buying more expansions. Its very stressfull buying a product you cant even use or enjoy :(

Note: I'm still playing the game. I didn't say that I didn't like the ideas on paper. I WILL say though that some additional work could have been done to keep the "good decision making" aspects while reducing the busywork that doesn't add to strategic or tactical depth.

Anything that increases the depth of the game is good. The newly implemented pop system is far from complex...

edit: the bugs, performance issues and generally buggy release are all issues that surpass concerns about the supposed "to much complexity".

The fact that the new economy system make you think about how you expand and why are nothing but good in my opinion, but then again I'm more of a grand strategy gamer than traditional 4x player. The old Stellaris was just too streamlined and quite frankly boring. The pace are practically the same you just have more important decisions to do along the way which might make you feel that it is paced differently. Slower ships speed also make wars more strategic since you will need to make more tough decisions, even if they could have done more with consequences for occupation and destruction of economic assets to make these decisions even harder.

If you are like me and enjoy the journey rather than the goal you probably like all the changes done by Paradox so far.

AI certainly need some love even if Glavius AI mod do allot to the AI and you should use that in SP, no matter what Paradox do to the AI this mod will always make it better.

I do understand if some people don't like where the game is headed but that is life, to be honest i don't think the game will loose more players than it get anyway so it most probably is a good strategy for Paradox to develop the game in the way they have done going forward.

How many people are actually doing this? Just out of curiosity.

Last we saw any number it was less than a .1% going back to 1.9 IIRC.

The problem is none of the versions are polished, all have substantial flaws, and only the active version has any chance of getting them fixed. If I were given my druthers, I wouldn't pick 2.2 as a base to polish/move forward from.

But I haven't been, so I'll check in after major patches to see if the game is more enjoyable than the last time.

My point was that saying you can rollback to an earlier version to not play 2.2 version is really more of an ultimatum that is self-serving/self-fulfilling because lets be honest who would?

I am trying to enjoy 2.2.3 and found it lacking in many area including but not limited to strategy choices (compared to HOI 4 or EU 4 for example).

I agree those suggesting rolling back are offering a non-solution. I roll back to 1.9 occasionally, but frankly all the versions need a few passes of fixing/balancing that can only be done by those with the code base. Modding can only take one so far.

My solution has been to abandon playing the game and come back after major patches to see if its evolution has improved my experience. I didn't buy Stellaris expecting an Alpha development game, but the continual major system changes, seemingly rushed releases, and failure to follow through and polish sure makes it feel like one.
