I guess this is one of those “welcome to yesterday” posts, but I’m so happy that I feel compelled to post.

As a result of my busy schedule, I had not learned that Paradox intended to produce the much anticipated EU3 until yesterday, so mega-kudos to Paradox for perpetuating this great franchise. EU2 was, and still is, my favorite game, and assuredly it’ll be a tough act to follow.

However, if the early screenshots & descriptions I’ve seen are indicative of what we’ll have to look forward to with EU3, it certainly appears at this point that Paradox is poised, once again, to produce a classic game that will give all us hardcore EU fanboys/fangals a game we can cherish for years.

Thanks again!!

From what I hear they tossed a coin - heads Victoria II, tails Diplomacy II. But the coin landed on its edge, so EU3 it was.

At first, they assumed that the edgy meant "make an edgy, out-of-the-box-thinking game like HOI3", but then the coin exploded into 3 very small pieces that all exactly like Spain, France, and the "explorer" icon.

Nonsense!

I have it on good authority that both Vicky2 and Diplo2 were very seriously considered. But, a proper Vicky2 would require a significant addition of complexity to the game - in particular to consider PoP's at the household level and such... Meanwhile, a proper Diplo2 would require a significant addition of simplicity to the game (no easy task, imo) - in particular that a system of *situational* grunts and such be based on subtle, cultural differences and such...

Anyway, Paradox decided to go for EU3, since it is really a no-brainer. Not much happened between 1453 and 1789 - really, a piece of cake with no concerns about technology, culture, nationalism, and especially about any larger history-shaping trends.

Edit: I can't speak for Duuk, but this has all the making of a mod-jacking thread. Sorry, Diomedes for our irrevelance...

Once again, you're trying to abstract everything. Any new version should, at a minimum, pay heavy attention to the endocrine systems of each member of each pop. And after the Freud event, to the id, ego, & superego of each. Maybe we should start opposing threads on whether a molecular of sub-atomic level would be better.

Hmmm, Heisenberg may have revealed the futility of that approach...

To the point, though, you have mentioned anachronistic details that are out of the game scope. Freud (and Jung, for that matter) are a bit later than the time period for the game... I know you want a *realistic* approach to the game, but still... Can't we content ourselves with the abstraction of the four humours? I'm sanguine, if you are...

...phlegmatic, I suppose.

Great idea, display the balances of hot, cold, moist, & dry, in every province.

(& I was talking about Vickie pops, in the previous post, hence the Freud event.)

Actually they were thinking of CK2 so they could clean up the mess from CK, but then they worried about if they'd have to outsource all that coding again and end up with a bigger mess.

Well... erghm... perhaps, there is sommink to that, but I understand that the CK marriage system will be a fundimental for EU3...

Balancing the humour map will be quite a challange. In fact the whole process may not be very funny at all...

I have it on good authority (Johan's keyboard sends me messages by flying elephants) that the original idea was to make a separate Napoleonic game, but there was too much bickering as to the time frame: some wanted a start date of 1789, some 1792, others 1797, and a few 1805. And don't even get started on the end date argument: 1814 or 1815!

I would make it Europa Universalis V, just to be bigger than Civilization IV...

In either case, I was also rather slow in getting the announcement, so hereby a very belated wish for success and: "May the Game be even bigger than EUII..." :)

Wow. Way to rub in the fact that I've been here since prior to the invention of the internet and yet I'm not a mod.

Allow me to sit here and cry quietly.

Ahhh remembah bek when runnin' a newfangled 9600 baud was fast... When we didn't use no fancy http (cert'nly not some flashy pictures). Surfin' the net was a million times faster than it is today; forget explorer, netscape, and firefox. You want a good web browser? Linx, baby. Text-based browsing took no time at all.

MP gaming? Why doesn't Paradox invest in some good ol' fashin'd spreadsheet games? No sef-respectin' grognard needs a map! You want to invade Greece? I'll move my infantry from hex N37 to O38, thank you very much. You can even do 3-D matrices this way, btw. I'm still waiting for TradeWars 2003 to come out. Flying around the galaxy building colonies in the distant future...

I was godlike in college. I had one of the first commercially available internal 14.4 modems.
