This is a good point. The 'Rules Chooser' (for lack of a better term) was an outstanding idea and, when I asked about that for Eu4, got a lot of Respectfully Disagrees.
Those EU4ers are crazy!

How can someone disagree with that?

It literally doesn't change your game if you don't want it to, and yet it's a great asset for those who do want to change their games.

And then I come over here. Immediately, the harsh wind is gone, replaced by a gentle breeze. I hear wind chimes softly in the distance. I hear someone ask "How do I seduce my homosexual daughter?" I smile.

To be fair, some of the rules have arcane effects and going through all the rules before a game probably takes 20 minutes. However, once you have the rules you like you can save them and never have to worry about them again. Well, unless you are crazy like me and have multiple different rule sets you enjoy.

And coming here to the CK2 forum feels like reaching the land of liberty after living in a war-torn landscape.

Amen! Especially about being in the land of liberty.

One of the things I love most about CK II is I can choose any realm and run almost any play style without feeling like im being punished by the game design for it. (Being punished by my heathen neighbors is completely understandable.) It always frustrated me to tr to play non-historical playthroughs in EU IV because it felt like I was being punished by the game design by making 90% of the focus tree that the game designers chose for that nation irrelevant. Add on top of that the modifier soup, hyper-specific events (im looking at you, Burgundian Inheritance), and rigid mechanics.

And when I come to the CK II with my ahistorical deeds, im greeted with responses of people who think it sounded fun, have similar stories, or suggestions of various twists to the game play. Much less dogmatic than the EU IV crowed ever has been.

I remember just to well the Forum around Horse Lords and Conclave.

The CK2 community was really upset, so much that thr CK2 Devs back then outright said, that they dislike visiting the forum and interacting with the community in dev diary threads. Only after they took a half-year long community break and patvh alongside RiP the game rules and the performance improvments people craved the community turned friendly again.
But the months before that, before the announcment of gamerules and RiP.. these were special times. I would say even harsher than how it is in the EU IV forums right now.

I remember coming back after a long forum and CK2 hiatus like, two or three weeks before Reaper's Due dropped...and it was definitely toxic beyond belief. It was amazing how quickly that cleared up after RD though.

It's the in-script code for Reaper's Due. Used here as slang for it instead of RD.

(It's short for Rest in Peace... or "Requiescat in pace" if you want to be all Latin about it...)

RD ist reserved for the Ruler Designer DLC, so RiP was used for Reapers Due in the game files, which I use here as mrinku already explained.

And I am always confused if I see your avatar, because I think: I didn't post in this thread yet, did I? And then: Ah yes it was das Heilige Thüringische Reich. :D (I am from Jena btw.)

Got it. Never saw people calling Rules Designer as RD around here, but Reaper's Due was.
I chose this nick because my first play was with Thuringia (as a homage to Hermann von Salza) and managed to create a big-ass HRE :)

I agree - somehow weird that a game that encourages me to poison my wife and turn my cousin into a eunuch to be sent as a present to the Chinese emperor has such a friendly, helpful community. :D

But yes, making controversial new game designs optional in the customizable rules was such a great decision and I'm very grateful for it. Sure, you can always mod EU4 to your preferences, but getting achievements is such a big motivator that modding is just not feasible for many players.

Well, you know, would you rather say that the trip to China will cost your cousin his balls or would you rather say that you are very sad to see him but have to let him go so that he can be showered by the riches promised by the Emperor?

Therefore it should be no wonder that we are all such nice and welcoming peeps. No if you allow me, I would like to show you the magnificient view from my balcony, you can even see far away mountains at the other end of the lake from here *makes a gesture directing to the balcony but stays safely away from it, hiding his saw in his back*.

Sure, you can always mod EU4 to your preferences, but getting achievements is such a big motivator that modding is just not feasible for many players.

I've been regularly modding the games and the main issue is that mods become obsolete too quickly. Unless doing only really minor changes it needs to be constantly updated. Of course nothing beats customisable, official mods done in a click instead of deciphering obscur ancient writings.

Well, tbf, that reflects more the state the game is in atm than anything else.
EU4 is just a mess right now, and has been for a while now. As a result, the forum is what it is.
CK2, on another hand, and especially since HF, is in a sort of honey moon with the community.
HoI4 had many ups and downs in quite a short while, but after this year's patch things are quite stable, so the forum has become quite peaceful.

This is a good point. The 'Rules Chooser' (for lack of a better term) was an outstanding idea and, when I asked about that for Eu4, got a lot of Respectfully Disagrees.
Those EU4ers are crazy!
The argument usually is "having these many variables will overload QA and introduce so many bugs".
Which is ironic when you look at how CK2 turned out.

On the other hand, one of the big reasons for CK2's popularity are the big mods, like Game of Thrones. I know several people that pretty much only play it with those on. As well, there were a lot of QoL mods that turned things off.

With mods being integral to a large chunk of the player base, it was probably BETTER for QA to have an integral way to switch things on and off, and regulate which ones mattered as far as Ironman went.
