I'd hope the reason why trench warfare surfaces only in the western front would be the same as it was historically: that the other theaters had much more space to do movement in, and you couldn't really establish a strong continuous front. If you only have one or two divisions per province of front it's much easier to establish local superiority than in the cases when you have a dozen divisions per province.

Indeed that's the case, thats why there would be no need for similar events for the Eastern Front or Mesopotamia, for example. Additionally, that's why I'd prefer to do it as I have suggested, as editing units would have repercussions in all arenas of combat.

But where it did happen, attacking a trench system in the east proved as effective as attacking it in the west. But because the troops had to keep moving to make sure the enemy wouldn't encircle them, they never had time to get a "dug-in modifier". :)

I disagree somewhat with the premise that Trench Warfare was a Purely Western front thing. All participants knew the advantage of defensive arrangements. What differed as said was area..In N France and on The Italian front the forces could be concentrated and trench lines in depth dveloped. So that if a breakthrough did occur it was easily closed at the second or Third line so exhaustion soon set in.But though the Fronts in W Europe aided the Trench system the same approach was used on all fronts. It failed because two things firstly the inability to develop in depth due to the extensive areas. And lack of material in the form of Guns wire etyc to make the defences hard.Where they were able to concentrate their resources the Turks Russians and Austrians were most cabable of Trench warfare.look at the Dardennelles or details of the Brusilov offensive.I still think the fortification modification is best with the Russians Turks etc finding it very hard to get defensive techs to reflect their inability to equip their forces ..which is why their Trench systems failed except when they could concentrate not Elite but properly equiped formations then the were as good as any Western nation..ask the Australians at the Dardenelles.

Simply Trnch warfare was universal it was effective in the West thats what you should try to do not make only a Western effect.

Here are the 'trench war' events in their entirety.

Firstly, trench warfare on the western front in November for a war starting in August

into effect, fleets going to sea and the people of Europe rushing to the
colours in a patriotic fervour, the future of the continent and the world will
be decided in an almighty clash of arms. It is widely accepted that the
coming war will be a short one – especially considering the evidence of the
 conflicts in 1864, 1866, 1870 and the Russo-Japanese war of 1904/5. Thus,
many are taking up arms to fight what is expected to be a glorious war,
where the victors shall claim admiration and success, and the dead will

by communications trenches. Ever more so, pillboxes and barbed wire begin

They look good Allenby. Although you might want to add a small supply cost into that, so those trenches are not just free. Say a -50 supply to compensate for the barbed wire, shovels, concrete, wood, etc. used to build them.

I'd like to remove all of Turkey's beaches, except Istanbul, Bursa, Jerusalem, Basrah. This would force the British player to fight a land campaign up to Aleppo, rather than landing directly into it........comments and thoughts?

Also, in the last 3 games I played, despite the Russians getting food riots, more food riots, collapsing infrastructure, the Feb rev refuses to fire.

I suggest increasing the dissent hits for the food riots to 15. Or add more dissent increasing events - the AI seems to be very good at reducing dissent.

That was for First Ypres before trench warfare came in. :)
If the scenario begins in November 1914, then the Kindermord bei Ypern would be going on just as the player starts - and to me it symbolises the point when the eager, aggressive young volunteers of summer 1914 ran headfirst into entrenched machine guns and got slaughtered. Though perhaps it is also too "poetic"...

A touch too poetic for my liking
Well, it is the name of a poem... :) You could make the Jan '14 scenario "Never Such Innocence Again" and the 1917 one "Anthem for Doomed Youth" to keep the theme going... or not. :D

Sounds like a bad shoot-em-up or maybe even a song produced by a heavy metal group
Another poem, actually. Isaac Rosenberg.

(snip x 2)
Remarque twaddle
That would have to be "Im Westen Nichts Neue", wouldn't it?

Well, I think 'No Man's Land' is in the lead so far. Any more suggestions?
I'd be happy with that one.

To compensate, put a beach on Gaziantep province to simulate Alexandretta, as the British considered on several occasions (1915, 1917 and 1918) landing a force there. In 1915 at least, it was floated as an alternative operation to the Dardanelles and considered in those later years to compliment the EEF's advance through Palestine and Syria.

Idea

I have an idea, making the org. "Reload" fast will ensure breakthroughs are almost impossible, this with forts would make it very hard to get anything more than one province or so when attacking. Good idea? Poor idea? =)

Not bad. :) The problem is that by tinkering with the organisation of units, they engage in 'trench' conditions no matter where they are, even in areas where a great deal of manoeuvre is possible.

Thank you :) Unfortunately the events wont trigger by themselves because they rely on certain changes to Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Serbian events - the details of which, I have not posted.

Therefore, I suggest you use this temporary event replacing the 62017 that you just copied down:

sides’ armies to outflank each other, a situation of stalemate in the form of a
continuous line of trenches appears to have transpired on the western
front. The trenches that have already been built by either side are simple –
matters of expedience, circumstance and spontaneity rather than the
outcome of the deeply thought out war plans. Initially short and designed to
protect small units, the trenches are growing in sophistication with numerous
lines extending back to form a coherent system of defence linked together
by communications trenches. Ever more so, pillboxes and barbed wire begin
to dominate the western front. "
