Improve relations with Austria, ally them, send them money, guarantee them, give them military access. Then try to join the HRE.

Or just release Danzig as a Vassal instead of giving them money.

You can survive as TO in this patch, in fact I did, and now I`ve crushed Poland, 20 years into the game, hard AI, lucky nations on.

Austria is the key, you need to secure alliance ASAP. Get diploreputation adviser, build your army to the force limit, and build a FL of galeys, while also improving relations. Having large navy is helping Austrian desire to ally you. Also ally Livonian order.

Join HRE, it is possible, use everything you can to boost your relations. Best thing is, answer Austrian call to arms, boost relations a lot.

Don`t expect to win the first war against Poland outright. All you need to do, is to position your army so that it doesn`t get destroyed till Austrians arrive, preferably retreat to Pomerania, you can always do that if you`re in a war with the emperor on your side.

Remember, Poland is eastern tech, only engage then when you have a tech advantage, or if Austria engages them. National focus military points to be sure.
Hire +discipline or +morale adviser.
I would advice picking quantity as your first NI. It stacks well with your NIs, and you need the extra manpower, ASAP.

You don`t need to win the first war. Any truce in which you don`t lose provinces will do. Vassalise TO after first war against Poland. If you can, also vassalise Pomerania.

Backstab Poland after it fought a tough war, usually it is against Bohemia or Muscowy. Shouldn`t take more than 20-25 years for you to win first war against Poland. And even if you will lose some territory, you might reclaim it later, after you subdue some HRE minors and whatnot.

I dunno with this patch with the AE changes scaling to base tax but I wouldn't try to vassalize Pomerania in the first war. That got me a coalition of Brandenburg, Bohemia, Denmark/Scandinavia, 5 other HRE minors, Poland, and Lithuania. The emperor can't save you if that happens.

But if you join HRE and play carefully and smartly and focus on gaining a military advantage, and jumping Poland when it is weak (and ally Austria), you should be able to manage.

For a challenge though, try to do this without joining HRE.

Problem is more timing related. TO shouldn`t rush to war, as it will ally all it`s opponents against the threat. You opponents should start fighting eachother first, then you won`t get coalitioned nearly as bad as they would tend to hate your neighbors more than you.

I nearly made a thread about this last week when I tried playing as the Teutonic Order. It's really hard to get enough relation with Austria to join HRE, but I didn't try sending money and it's very hard to get them to call you to arms (they also wouldn't answer my own call to arms.) Sometimes, even if you're lucky and Poland doesn't DOW you early on Brandenburg or some other HRE state usually will and drag major powers into the war.

I'll also point out that it seems it would be easier in the 1453 startdate than the 1444. In 1444 you have a province in the HRE with a Bohemian core that everyone wants. Whereas, in 1453 Austria starts with a PU with Hungary (which means you get two allies out of one) and Poland has a PU with Lithuania (which means it's easier to ally with Muscovy or Novgorod. Poland usually gets this PU in 1444 anyways.) The downside is that Austria isn't emperor in 1453.

I'll also note again that most guides I've found online for the Teutonic Order are horribly out of date. Someone might want to visit their page on the wiki and do a little editing.

They problem is Austria tends to ally poland all the time. They have friendly opinions of each other at start/

Alright so I did a couple runs today mostly trial and error to figure out what I can do and how to do it better.

I have made a successful attempt, but I noticed a lot of it kind of relys on luck, such as getting a diplo advisor and the sorts. I instantly improved relations with Austria as suggested and got an alliance, I also got a alliance with Hungry whom Austria had no rivaled yet. After I secured my saftey I declared war on Livonia Order and Vassaled them, took Riga and fed them it. After those two I went for a alliance with Muscovy and secured that, I then declared war on Poland/Lithuania and won that pretty easily taking some territory from Lithuania and releasing Mazovia from being a vassal and vassalized them later one. Pretty much after that Lithuania got in a huge war with Crimea and imploded and Galacia popped outta them.

Thats as far as I've gotten so far (year 1505) but I noticed the start relys a lot on RNG such as Poland/Bradenburg insta declaring war on you and if you get a diplo-advisor or not and even if you do secure the alliance with Austria hope they don't get pre-occupied when you get attacked by Poland (I actually lost a game like this).

I played Teutons -> Prussia -> Germany last patch (or maybe 1.6).

I allied Austria and joined the HRE, became friends with Muscovy, and slowly ate away the German states and Poland

Join HRE early and then hit Poland hard, early and often (preferably with the help of your Austrian attack dog). You can get Polish as an accepted culture with just a few of their high tax neighboring provinces, and they won't be much of a challenge.

The easy way to join the HRE, by the way, is to simply get into a war with Austria. If you are quick enough to get the alliance, you might be able to hit the Poles for the first time before the PU (and sometimes in this patch they don't even PU Lithuania at all); DoW Poland and give your gold to Austria, which'll put your relations (hopefully) at 200. You might not even need to hand cash if they rival Hungary or Bohemia early; you just got to do the same.
