Since Chema_Cagi is referencing something I said, I thought I should at least mention where I got my information.
When I said this, I was making note of something I had seen in the game somewhere. (I dont have access to EU2 as a naval power at the moment, so I can't find the right screen...) But there is a tool tip notation that refers to percentage of coastline under blockade. It just notes that you have X% of your coastline under blockade, and it is related to trade.
Now, what I don't know is any of the following informaiton.
1) European coastline only, or all of your coastline?
2) Does it hinder your trade income earned directly by merchants, or does it hinder trade income that goes to COTs you own, thus reducing the pool of trade your merchants (and everyone elses) have access too?
3) Are COTs in some special way affected by being under blockade?
I have no answers to those questions, but hopefully you can find them, Chema_Cagi. I never bothered, since I would blockade enemy ports just to kill the tax income, production income, and troop build capacity.

It would be wonderful if this worked, and if someone pointed out the requirements. I like to play naval powers, but often (unless you pause a lot) the attrition losses to the blockader outweigh the tax losses of the blockadee. So I only blockade the ports where the enemy ships are hiding.
Obviously depends on who you are fighting and how extensive their territory/the war is.

Well duh... that is rather obviously one use, but not the one we were talking about.
In the case of a mass blockade it is clearly an attempt to damage a nation economically.

Just thought I'd add some interesting info on this...
I was looking at one of my province's trade numbers in a game and I noticed that the tool tip said something about the amount of trade generated there, my trade efficiency, the presence of pirates and finally... le piece de resistance... "5% of our home ports are blockaded".
I haven't yet investigated enough to see whether this seriously has any effect or not, the tool tips are sometimes wrong. I figured I'd leave that to someone a little keener than me![]()
