Seriously newbie question here - how does one go about testing a mod? I'm guessing one doesn't simply play the entire game through every time one makes a change. I know it's possible to run the game in AI only mode (although I must admit I don't know how), but what about player events? Is the only way to test them to do it by hand?

Thanks for any responses!

You can play what's called a "Hands off game" where you play as a small country like Cuba and let the game run at a higher speed to see what happens. You can manually fire an event using the cheats to make sure it does what you want it to do.

Great, thanks for the advice! Do you know where I can find a list of cheats/console commands?

It's not on the lists, but there is a command called "debugai". I'm not sure it's still working. I tried it and the game accepted the command but the display didn't come up. I use an odd display resolution so it could be a video problem. I'll have to play with it some more.

debugai definitely works in 1.08 (at least for me). Just select a province of an AI country and the information should be written all over the screen. If that doesn't happen, it's probably a video problem, yes.

A good idea for testing mods is to use JSGME. That way you don't need a separate installation, can easily undo changes and don't have to worry about whether the game actually loaded your version of the file, like with moddir.

I always do testing as Afganistan (first on the list and almost no events) using "debugai" cheat. Also "nofog" is often quite useful, as it reveals all statistics for all countries, so you can see what is really happening.

I use JSGME for everything I add after clean install, including patches. I use it with just about every game I have.

EDIT: My problem with debugai was a video thing, before I start I have to set my desktop resolution to the same value as the game. Odd.

I did find out you can use the up arrow key to repeat commands without retyping. Handy for nofog.

I personally haven't used JSGME for most of the time. It's useful, but i would like to see multiple mod support just like in DH or IC - simpler and better solution.
Handling multiple patches might be some advantage though.

The up arrow key is especially useful for commands adding resources to the pool or initiating revolts in provinces.
