Hey all, I have a really bugging issue. I'm playing as Navarra on the IGC, and one of my goals was to make Spain completely landlocked - that is, capturing all of its seaside Iberian provinces. I recently managed to do this, and I even captured Leon and Estremadura provinces, which means that Spain (Toledo and Castille) is completely surrounded by me.

One of the reasons I wanted to do this was to cut off Spanish colonization, but I found that even surrounded, Spain can still send settlers through my provinces and even through my ports. So, the question I ask is this: is there any way to block the passage of Spanish settlers through my lands? They all seem to originate from Castille province, Spain's capital.

One more question: I noticed that in the IGC, sometimes my country (Navarra) will take loans or even make peace without my approval. Can I prevent this from happening? Or is this a direct result of my monarch's poor administrative/diplomatic skills?

Thanks!:)

Well, I ain't no expert at these kinda things, but I'll give it a go anyhow!

I've noticed my own colonists crossing other countries to get to their new homes also. I figure they're civilians, refugees if'n you will, and are allowed through because of Christian charity by all countries. Besides, them soldier boys have got other worries besides tracking down and stopping poor refugees looking for a happier life! Even them old heathen countries won't kick refugees around. Will they?

As for your country doing things you didn't authorized. Watch for them message icons in the upper-right corner of your screen! I missed them regularly, and important info is being asked of you when they appear. Especially messages such as declaring war against your ally's enemy and such as that. Better yet, I went into the MENU button down on the bottom-left of the screen and then clicked OPTIONS>MESSAGE SETTINGS and modified the way in-game messages are handled so that those all important messages are not missed. I never did notice those message icons until it was too late. I got kicked out of two or three alliances before I figured it out. That might be what you are experiencing. I've not known of my monarch's poor settings to prevent me from making bad choices of my own. Least-wise, not yet! :D

Started up the IGC as Kleves. No alliances, no Royal Marriages. Used cheats to see the world and gain colonists. Sent colonists and started new colonies in New World without ports from a land-locked country. Ports don't matter. Alliances don't matter. My guess is that war don't matter either.

Hope that helps. :)

Actually, the only reason ports didn't matter here is that you "used cheats". In a legal game owning a port is critical to getting colonists; but, any port will satisfy the requirement, even one in the RotW (I think). Once the colonists/traders are on their way, they just take the shortest route from one province/sea zone to the next to get to their destination, no matter whose borders they cross.

What bugs me is that the Caspian and the Great Lakes are treated as open waters, allowing anyone to sent settlers to their shores.

Ports are only necessary to get colonists over time. Events can do the same thing. In a game as Helvetia, I colonized Far Karelia, whose colony had been destroyed by natives. Landlocked countries can send colonists off all right.

With regards to money and taking automatic loans, you can have a treasury at zero for years and years and never take a loan. The key is that if you're going to spend money and you're doing so at the end of the month, make sure that you click the spend button before the month changes and money is deducted from the treasury for maintenance and stuff.

Running at zero treasury is a much better way to fight inflation that keeping your treasury slider at zero income. Even if you're broke, normal maintenance is deducted with no inflation or loan penalties regardless of the amount of money in the treasury.

Thanks, everybody. And to think - all that work surrounding Spain, for nothing! Ah well, at least I get to keep Andalusia (and all its settlers) :)

One more question crossed my mind: is it possible to overthrow or assassinate your monarch? I ask because a little while ago, I was playing as Savoy and I got a new king in 1504. However, a year later he suffered some sort of mental illness, and all his values fell as low as possible, permanently. Unfortunately, he ended up reigning for forty-nine years, and throughout that time there was constant peasant revolt, corruption, loss of investments, etc., which I really didn't appreciate.

Thanks:)

You can use the event cheats to cause early death of monarch, and edit the savegame to increase stats and change the name of the monarch.

There is a bug with the temporary insanity of a monarch event within the game that prevents the monarch's stats from going back to where they should be. When the insanity event fires, jot down a note of how long its supposed to last and when that time hsa passed, go back into your savegame and edit the stats to normal.

Also, I believe just reloading the game removes any temporary insanity issues as well...could be wrong, but I do remember this being discussed a long time ago.

Point taken. Perhaps I missed the point of the original question, and it would not be the first time I ever did that! I was checking on the validity of colonists/traders using anyone's ports to get where they want to be, not actually "how to get" stuff. My apologies if I oversimplified.
