I doubt he is a beta tester. First he claimed that the game is out and that he started playing yesterday. And beta testers are still under NDA until the game is available in stores. Sounds like he is trying to cover his ass . . .

nitpick:

Betatesters are still under the NDA until long after the release (usually something like 5 years or so). They're allowed to talk about anything already in the public domain (which after the release of the game is, well, the game ;) ), but they're still not allowed to talk about what they are working on in the to-be-released patch, AFAIK.

Still, I think there is a danger is making it sound like the piracy is a good thing for the company, since it helps pirates justify their actions. I've heard a range of excuses people use to justify their personal pirating:

It helps spread word about the game
It will encourage companies to release demos
It will encourage companies to provide more patches
It will let people avoid paying for crap and lead to better software
It will encourage companies to release games quicker
It will encourage companies to lower inflated game prices
It will bypass annoying to the customer copy protection

When the reality is a company like Paradox is hurt most directly by illegal pirating. After Paradox, legitimate purchasers are hurt as well, as there are less resources to improve the game. The only one who benefits from piracy is the pirate, especially when preying on a small company with limited resources.

Of course, you could argue pirates will do their thing regardless of what shallow justification is used, but I don't like giving them excuses.

The only time I go looking is when I have the original disc and box in my sweaty hands and discover that the dumbass publisher has shoved on a copy protection system that doesn't work with a reasonable % of the commonly available CD/DvD drives, mine included. In that situation I personally feel the publisher only has themselves to blame. What is infuriating is that the same copy protection systems have been at fault over and over again for years and yet the usual suspects slap the next version onto their games without ever bothering to run a few basic compatability tests.

Fortunately I've never had problems with Strategy First, so all Paradox games have run first time. My Vickie preorder has been lodged for months and it hitting the warez networks a couple of weeks earlier than usual isnt going to change anything.

As stated by someone here, if he was a beta he would have had the game for a while wouldn't he?

And when did Paradox send the games to reviewers? would they have arrived a couple of days ago?

Must say, i loved IEX's way of saying things.....only a paradox fan would start with 'You Sir are a software pirate.....':D

Any of the usual weenies on the net would have said something totally different..

If you can find out his real name, then compare it to the list of credits. If he's not in there, then he's not a beta.

Pirating is wrong, plain and simple.
It is no different than someone breaking into your house and stealing the cd out of your computer.

I really hope no one on this forum supports the pirate scum and goes and downloads the game. Even if it's free, and you purchase a retail later, you are still supporting the pirates when you do so, and harming the future support Paradox will give the game.

I disagree.
If you allready have a pre-order, and don't intend to cancel it, but really want to play Vicki two weeks before you get it, and it is free, and you are not supporting pirates because its long past that point, every shareware product on the net has Vicky by now.
So I don't see how it matters to Paradox that a paying customer get the game two weeks before, if there are bastards out there who do not plan on paying who are sitting right now and enjoying the fruits of paradox's labor. It is similar to me going to a friends house three years ago, and seing a game of super advanced "Risk" on his computer, and then asking what that. Since then I've bought everything Paradox has put out, even Legion. So just saying don't download the game, even if you will pay for it on the 18th, I think is misguided. Why punish loyal fans?

On a related point, I completely agree with Johan and Patric being mad about the piracy and threatening not to patch Vicky. How wouldn't be mad? But on a bright note, like it has been said before, Vicky, like EUs and HoI are a tenth of game it will be with patches and user made modes. And besides the top one percent of hackers that can actually make their own cracks, the rest will have to buy the game.
