Most games are available on the net before they are in the stores, and it really doesn't have any effect on the sales provided it's a quality product. There are people who will always buy the game, people who will always download the game, and there is a small group that in between who will usually buy a game as long as it's worth it. Nothing will change this. Having it released on the net a week before it's in the the stores isn't going to make people who would usually buy it decide not to, just as it being pirated a week late wouldn't stop the people who are going to download it.

I know it really won't have much effect on the sales, but shouldn't the reviewer be punished somehow? Piracy is illegal afterall.

They must be some moles in distributors (SF or whatever) or reviewers (bunch of magazines/sites). Otherwise there won't be so much "pre-release" game on the net.

If with fans, I'll take part in tortuning the person. Please count me in.

So the unlucky event of pirating will maybe lead to an early and developed patch for us loyal fans. So that even the people who actually dwnld the game will have to buy the original. I'm optimistic..

Early piracy may lead to no patches in the future...

That would be "Tjära och fjädrar", or rather that's the translation of the ingredients. But I think it would work her too. Lucky Luke was popular here, so you might say that it is in some ways part of our culture.

Might be time to preorder some of that. :)

I will buy it, and would have bought it even if I had a pirate copy, just because P'dox is such a great company. I would even bought two copies. :)

Anyway, if it's the press, that sucks big time, and I really think that whoever did this should be punished, as well as the people downloading it.

I'm not sure I understand why... :(

Why would the loyal customers be punished because some wacko leaked the product early? Woulda been done sooner or later...

Now I'd just find this beyond sad if this has an impact on the end quality of the product. Dont let it get to you guys. "The Press" is just way too big for every single person to be trustworthy. What matters is that the game still comes on the shelves so that the rest of us can buy it and enjoy it right?

I'm just having difficulties understanding how and why this has an impact on the flow of things. (ie, no new information until release, and also, possibility of less patching?!)

Because if Paradox gets less money from making these games, they might see it as pointless to do the extra work after release to patch them. Why would they work to make games better for people who have stolen those games from Paradox?

What about us loyal fans then? Are we just gonna be abandoned because of some damn moron putting out a review version on the net?

Thats BAD logic! We didnt all steal the game, only a few did! Plus, it wont necessarly make them get less money, the impact will probably be minimal.

Its the other way around really. I pay for paradox games because I know they are GREAT products and patched extensively. Thats an effective way to combat piracy. If they just ditch the towel, they'd lose that reputation. Thats why I dont really understand Patric's comment... but I'll assume its based largely on the legitimate frustration and disapointement that follows any early leak and not representative of what may or may not happen. (tm)

I can hope, right. :D

Not to mention that working on patches costs time for which the programmers need to be paid... and if there's less revenue....

Is it really so surprising though, that there is a pirated copy of Victoria available before official release? These things happen all the time. Surely Paradox must have been aware of the possibility of this happening.

As far as I can tell, a pirate copy has turned up on a website somewhere (how anyone finds these things is beyond me - I'v looked are warez sites before and you just end up in an endless circle of **** sites and pop-ups. I've never found any software).

Judging by what Patric has said, they've traced the leak to a review copy sent to the press - if they can track it down to who (if the copies were individually marked somehow) then I suppose they can indeed sue their arses off, but that assumes that the pirates didn't remove such identifying info, which is probably unlikely.
