Additionally, I would urge you to use traditional English grammar, punctuation, and paragraph-breaking. Your broken style is hell on non-native speakers of English (of which we are many on this forum) and reads like a teenager on steroids (which you are almost certainly not). Please show a bit of compassion and write in what most people would classify as ordinary English. The style you are using now is so very easy to misunderstand

forgive my english.
i will not post no more on this forum.EDIT forget thise line <<<<<
greetz and succes with the game, altough i dont believe you need it.

Given that I was not proposing a distribution scheme, I cannot honestly answer this question. :D

When talking about the limited shelf-life [= the length of time that a given item can remain in a salable condition on a retailer's shelf, to use the dictionary definition], I was just pointing out the policy of many stores to not stock up on titles that fail to sell well initially. In other words, a bad start in sales of your game (whether because of piracy or otherwise) can mean that you get punished by a shorter shelf-life than your game would otherwise have achieved, which can again lead to lower long-term revenues.

So, to summarize:

Pirate copies of Victoria are available.

Paradox is upset.

Johan says he may or may not release patches for Victoria.

Consensus is 'Piracy is Bad.'

Well, I can understand why Paradox are upset over the piracy issue, but I hope that Johan was just in a bad mood when he posted about no patches.

Why? Simply because if they do not post patches for Victoria because of poor sales, then the sales for future Paradox games will likely be affect negatively.

The biggest strength of Paradox to many of its fans is the length and strength of support they give to the games after release.
Compare EU v1.00 to EU v1.10, EU2 v1.00 to v1.07b, compare HOI v1.00 to 1.05.

If Paradox did not put in this effort the games would remain a pale shadow of what they are today.

The reason I will buy Victoria is not that I think I will be opening the box to play an awesome game, I will open the box and play an involved, complex game which will evolve over a few patches into an awesome game.

If HoI had not been patched from V1.00 (heck even 1.03 wasn't that great) then I would be a lot less interested in Victoria.

Software piracy IS a big problem - I live in SE Asia where in most countries you can walk into a shopping center and find stores that openly sell pirate software only - but cutting support to your paying customers is not the solution to the problem.

Unpleasant as it is, the current reality is that software piracy exists, and will continue to do so. The solution to it is to find ways of rewarding those who buy original software whilst making it difficult for those with pirate versions to benefit. Pirate-incompatible patches are probably the most common and effective means currently employed.

Pirates are dicks and should Paradox find out where the ones who host Vicky live I would be quite happy to walk round and administer a sound beating. Patric & co are quite right to be angery about their game being pirated, having said that, most of the people who get the pirate copy will people who just don't buy games. They won't say "Hmm, Victoria and Silent storm are both in stores, I think I'll get a warez copy of Vic and buy SS", they just pirate both games like they do with any others they want.

Which would make you a worse criminal than them.

And you probably won't be able to play Victoria much in prison.

Let's call it a warning, meaning that they (and we) hope that it won't affect sales. Day-to-day costs are very high for small software companies, and a day spent on supporting a game that didn't sell well is a day in red. In order to stay in black they might be forced to cut the support short (as most other comapnies do by default) and focus on the next project, hoping that it will sell better.

If they're predicting a very tight profit window for Victoria, a pre-release pirated version might be all that's needed for the project to turn red.

It's up to us to prevent that from happening, I'm thinking of ordering some more copies for some friends, that way I can support Paradox and make sure I have some MP victi.. buddies :)

A warning of what though?

So far all of the Paradox games I have played have been good-but-flawed in their initial release forms. It is only after patching that the games really became great.

A warning that 'we may not patch Victoria' to me is making me wonder whether it is worth buying.

It is the after-release support that Paradox gives that makes them shine. Look at EU2, where Paradox still patched after the distributors dropped interest in doing so, and the improvement in gameplay from 1.07 to the current 1.07b is huge.

All said and done, I will still buy Victoria as I would be astonished if Paradox didn't patch the game. If they don't though - I will think very hard about buying the NEXT game from them.

I interpreted Patrics original post to mean that if piracy continues like this that they might be out of business. I never thought of it as a threat or a warning directly related to Vicky's future.

I don’t think we as a community should be over analyzing and reacting to one post that he wrote after finding out that his company could loose tens of thousands of dollars of sales due to piracy. Just hold tight for another week or so and look forward to Vicky being in your CD;)
