Terrain penalties affect both sides (-1 to attacker and +1 to defender)

Hello all :)

Out of curiosity, I decided to do some tests. I created a situation where I could reliably get two full-strength militia units to fight (with identical generals and no other modifiers in play) and recorded the number of casualties they caused on each dice roll. I repeated the test 20 times, for exactly one day each time.

The first number is the D8 roll; the second number is the number of casualties they inflicted on the enemy.
0 : 5
1 : 9
2 : 14
3 : 20
4 : 26
5 : 33
6 : 41
7 : 50

The results were all nicely consistent, except for one particular battle. The dice rolls were:

Att: 0 (-1)
Def: 4

The attacker caused 2 casualties, which fits the pattern for the above. However, the defender caused 33 casualties, which is the equivalent of rolling a 5. I then did another 20 tests, this time with a heavy infantry unit attacking a militia unit. In four battles, terrain came into play and the results were consistent with the above.

TL;DR - if an attacker has a -1 dice roll penalty for terrain, then the defender will also get a +1 dice roll bonus, but this does not get shown on the combat screen. So, be careful when you cross over straits or rivers!

Nicely done, Cheexsta. It looks like EU:Rome applies terrain penalties in the same way as EU3, as both a penalty to the attacker and a bonus to the defender.

Is there any such accurate data about general martial rating effects?
