Terra Incognito Questions

I assume this has been asked numerous times, so I apologize for that, but I wasn't able to find an answer.

My Roman Empire has expanded and explored pretty darned well, but things are starting to make less sense, weirdly enough. I've figured out that the less-foggy borders usually imply wasteland, and once you surround the area, the impassible wasteland will become visible. But there seem to be other types of Terra Incognito, and I haven't figured it out yet. For a while, I had one Conquistador who was able to explore in South America and one who wasn't. Now none of my Conquistadors can explore anywhere:

Here you see a Conquistador who is on the ship near NW Australia:

Here you see the unexplored lands in South America. I cannot move my Conquistador-led units into any of the territories:


What am I missing?

You are probably using generals, not conquistadors.

Okay, so that explains some of it... That's what I get for doing "Just one more thing" for hours on end.

Generals are gloves, Conquistadors are hats (plus the mouseover names them outright).

Now... with that correction in mind, the question still remains. Here's an army led correctly by a Conquistador where there's still an X on the Terra Incognito:

There is a lot of wasteland around the amazon, you are probably trying to run into it. When you explore around it, it will eventually become visible.

Okay it was a combination of Wasteland (Guyana, Amazonas, Kalahari, Congo Basin) and me just using the wrong troops in the SW Pacific.

You usually need a colony adjacent to it, too, iirc.

EDIT:

I think if you have colored wasteland on, it might reveal when you border enough of it to change it to your color.

Thanks a bunch, I just recently conquered Scottish South America so I'll be able to find out soonish.
