when i change, say, an infantry template. i want to add field hospitals and AT guns. will pre-existing infantry change to the new template?

also, when i upgrade my field hospitals to a better one, again, will pre-existing FHs upgrade automatically?

Yes, assuming you edited the template in-place and didn't edit a copy of it, any fielded or in-training* division based on the template you modified will be updated to reflect the changes you made.

And yes to the 2nd question.

(*) i.e. being recruited and trained on the 'Recruit & Deploy' panel.

the only copies / duplicates i have made are to the original. like i did an "infantry BK". i do not know why. the guy told me to in the video. i just keep changing the original.

so let me ask you this......i just got the infantry half tracks, better than the opel. so now all my motorized infantry, i go to the template, switch all the opels to half tracks, and all my current units, using that template, automatically upgrade, yea?

Yes.

You need to make sure you have enough equipment for all the units being changed, so be careful.

You might want to get a better understanding of what you're doing. Can start with this.
Whole thing was, probably, due to equipment concerns: while it doesn't matter much in peace time, you really don't want your frontline to suddenly lose half its strength (which, likely, comes with reduced overall organization and none of the new design benefits until they get properly reinforced).
You need to make sure you have enough equipment for all the units being changed, so be careful.
To be fair, there is a tooltip when you hover over "save" button (provided you have enough xp; otherwise you'll have to hover over each individual equipment type in division details for that info).

The starting templates are just that;
DUPLICATES are great for test-beds for experimental designs, to see how ORG, HA, SA, Piercing, work between each other ; and
1] when introducing new templates, keep an eye on your stockpiles, to be able to have the needed equipment for your new division [XX] template ;
2] be sure of the new battalion(s) [BNs] BEFORE you hit the 'save' button ;
3] most additions to a basic template will be INCREMENTAL, a BN here, another BN there; depending upon your stockpiles .
These should be FIELD PROMOTIONS, so you upgrade a small number of XXs as affordable; rather than doing the entire damn ARMY, in one fell swoop !!
I remember, as USSR, at around 250 hours into the game, to add 2 line AA BNs to the basic 9 INF/0 Arty XX {{before I found out about duplicates}} ;
BOY-HOWDY, did I goof THAT up, I had 195 XXs of 9/0s at the time when I hit the 'save' button ... and it took me 2 YEARS to claw my way out of the production pit !

'Stair-stepping' improves a XX by adding 1-2 BNs per template, while aiming at a larger XX, like a 13 INF/ 4 Arty/ 2 AA (+supports) XX, in several steps .

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, another thing to remember is whenever you change the template, the experience of any unit of that template lowers.

Not whenever. When you increase their used manpower. If the new template uses reduced manpower, they keep their veterancy.

Actually I like to bring all my army in one spot, change their template a lot (for example going from 20w to 40w infantry) and merge these units in pairs, so all the XP they got remains with them (if new manpower requirements are not greater than 2x of previous template, obviously). This shouldn't be done during the war, of course.
