Alright, there had better be a logical explanation for this or I am going to be pretty annoyed at the blatant cheating of the AI in this game. How did a computer-controlled French army appear in Novgorod, to attack me, when every surrounding province is owned by me, Russia, or Poland? Novgorod has no sea access and France is not allied with Russia or Poland. How did they get to my territory? Were they airborne troops? I have saved a copy of this game, showing the defeated Frenchies retreating from Novgorod into yet another of my Pskovian provinces, if anybody wants to see it. I have called the saved game 'Cheating French Bastards.'

Hmm, your not really giving enough pieces of the puzzle for me to help you.

I'm guessing your playing a modified game as Pskov consisting of Novgorod, Pskov and ?? what other province(s).

Also, did you have troops in all your provinces & what nations do ALL the surrounding provinces belong to ?

HRE?

To Wargamer:

What constitutes being 'part of the HRE'? Spain is the Holy Roman Emperor and has no alliance with France and has bad relations with them on top of that. None of France's provinces are in the HRE. Poland has a few provinces in the HRE but I don't think this would account for the French troops appearing in Novgorod.

To Huszics:

My European empire consists of the provinces of Pskov, Novgorod, Vologda, Archangelsk, and Vladimir. I had troops in all the provinces except Pskov. I have no access to the sea to allow a sea invasion and all of the surrounding provinces belong to either Russia, Teutonic Order, or Poland. None of them are allied with France or at war with me. I can't figure out how this enemy army got into my province.

I like this game alot but it's really, really starting to frustrate me with the things that don't make sense.

Did you say you had an army in Archangelsk? Otherwise he might have launched a seaborne invasion against it and just marched through.

And I mean it when I say it, the AI is not meant to teleport anything.

I suspect that either

France was at war with Poland or Russia and moved its troops through their provinces.

or (unlikely, but possible)

France had an army stranded in Poland or Russia from a previous war.

I have never seen anything like the AI cheating in this manner, so I think there's probably some real explanation, unlikely though it may seem.

Are you alowed to enter enemy colonies in europe without beeing in war ?

Anyway, I as Greven, suspect Archangelsk to the place of origin for this invasion. It most definitly is accessible for a sea invasion.

Is france in war with any of your neighbours? That could explain why they got there?

Or have they been at war with any of them just before that and army was stuck behind until you got into war with them?

Send me your savegame, I really want to see this.. sounds really weird.

But he would have had to march through Vologda and get crushed by me superior forces there.

It's on its way. I was in error about one point: I only put troops in Archangelsk to prevent a French retreat from Vologda to Archangelsk. Speaking of said province, I conquered it from Russia. It is a city with a population of over 1100 people yet I can still send colonists there. I thought there was a size limit to sending colonists to cities but I can't find it in the manual. What is the limit? And should I be able to build a port at Archangelsk?

If France has ever fought any of your neighbours i guess they just might have left an army sitting under a white flag in a country now at peace with them. That could allow them to march that army through other provinces belonging to that nation en-route to attack you.

5000 is the limit for colonisation. Handy to know for smaller European provinces if you want to switch their religion after occupation. I don't think Archangel can become a port even though I believe it ought to be one for the summer months of the year when the waters aren't frozen.
