<First forum post>

So I'm thinking that part of the point of the three tech card system is that not everyone gets the same techs. This claim is supported by the intended lack in research trading. If so, given the length of the games, won't all species that make it to the late game have all the techs anyway?

I count ~120 techs in the wiki (perhaps there will be more...). That comes to only 40 rounds for techs which doesn't seem like a lot considering the length of the game if the goal is indeed that not everyone should have the same tech (aka all the techs, by the late game).

I would love a game where you maybe get 40-60% of the available techs by the end game to really increase the variability and replayability of Stellaris.

I encourage folks to clarify the design choices and poke holes in my train of thought.

Thanks and cheers!

The only techs in the wiki are the ones that have been seen, recognized not to be in the wiki, and entered. A dev somewhere on the forums has indicated that there are roughly 300 techs in the game, plus the techs that give you incremental boosts to your stuff.

Excellent, that should help quite a bit! Do you know if the devs expect folks to have most if not all the techs by the end game?

It's impossible to get all technologies in a single game, because some techs are dependent on ethos: psi stuff for spiritualists, cybernetics for materialists, etc.

That is false.

Non-spiritualists can get Psionics-technologies, but only if a Scientist by chance happens to get the Psionics trait :)

if we are lucky the 300 techs will increase in the future trough DLCs and possibly modding...

i don't think 300 is enough for a game with this kind of ambition because you research 3 techs at a time and some of them are locked due to specific circumstances...
so probably after around 80 tech rounds you will already be inside the repetitive techs procedurally generated (like advanced lasers: +5%)

i hope for at least 3 times this number in the future (the repetitive techs should be something reached after 1000 years or so)

That's one of my biggest fears for the release, that the game pace is too fast. In the blorg stream they are rushing but it feels like the research is too quick though... I hope it will be balance by release or that my impression was wrong.
I want to play games where you don't have the best techs after 150 or 200 years.

I want to play games where you don't have the best techs after 150 or 200 years.

I second this. I've played several games where you simply get all the tech you could ever need by mid game and the end game is just far less engaging because of it. Want to terraform everything? go ahead. Want to build a super weapon to destroy your enemies who you could easily beat with your OP fleet? Why not? While I like the concept of super weapons and very powerful fleets it becomes extremely dull when you can basically just send your death ball of ships across the galaxy tearing everything up. I know crisis events were added in to combat this but I fear they simply won't be enough. Luckily the techs you are able to access are random so you wont always be able to create the unstoppable fleet of doom, at least not during mid game.

I know I discuss two separate issues with this post. One issue being too few techs and the other being power creep.

I think there's alot of tech already, but of course I'd love to see 100 more techs or even a 1,000 more it's just that this is release.
We'll see alot more in the future as more expansions and patches add features etc.

In the game currently we have approx 300-350 counting special anomoly tech, this is plenty for now, and besides we'll have mods to extend research times by may 15th I'd wager.

If I may ask, where are you getting that 300 tech number from? All I can remember is Merni saying that there are too many techs for her to bother counting.

The figure proposed likely counted the repeatable techs once but ignored the fact that they could be researched n number of times.

I'm not so sure, he specifically excluded all the repeatable techs. It could be understood as only counting them once, but that seems so obvious that specifically mentioning that seems odd. It seems more logical to assume that all the repeatable techs are the sort of filler material that's not worth counting in this context (they're just basic statistical upgrades rather than anything interesting). Plus, if they are generated on the fly, somehow, it might be better to just exclude all of them rather than counting all the minute variances in them.

I think that the purpose of Rare techs is to provide techs that not everyone has access to. It would be nice to whole "branches" of tech dependent on certain rare techs though.

[In this case a branch means that the tech requires an earlier tech in the branch to show up; I'm thinking something like one rare tech might have up to 5 non-rare techs dependent on it, in the extreme case]
