I don't even know why i write this because at best it would appear at eu5 but

well

eu3 had 'investments' system where you were devoting part of your income to mint/stability/landtech/navaltech/trade/production/government, it had its problems but was a step ahead

eu4 has 'monarch points, system where you invest monarch points to get adm/dip/mil tech, it has its problems but is a step ahead (for example there is no longer 'most of techs doing nothing useful/interesting' syndrome as less categories means more stuff packed in each of them)

what if eu5 had less linear Technology Tree?

Just imagine that freedom and possibilities. You can research everything symetrically like AI would probably do or experiment with concentrating on particular path to be here before opponent empires; you can have brilliant guerilla fighers and weak artillery, focus on land Silk Road trade but not navy, mercantilism or free trade tech, government theory or infrastructure, strategies, strategies! There would be some caps ensuring you can't have industrialization while fighting with neolithic clubs ( ;) ) but whole system would be more flexible and interesting.

Also it would allow on differenting countries and parts of the world more. Incans would have brilliant infrastructure and Aztecs urban architecture but lack military theory, hordes superior cavalry techs but retarded economy, Chinese would be awesome at many things but not banking/colonization etc.

Add to this some neat sexy stuff like '+100 to national glory for inventing Heliocentric Theory' and voila you have... potential swarm of bugs but I still think it would be worth it :p
