Well, Right now, I'm just doing the basics of looking up model names. I also have a couple of plans rolling around in my head. I believe the major catagories should be:

Infantry Tech
Armored Tech
Electronics/Computer Tech
Industrial Tech
Space/Sattellite Technology (replace Nuke)
Rocketry Tech
Naval Tech
Gunnery Tech (Replace Artillery/Same as Artilley)
Submarine Tech
Aircraft Tech (Replace Heavy_Aircraft)
Helicopter Tech (Replace Light aircraft)
Land Doctrine
Naval Doctrine
Air Doctrine

Any suggestions?

What about a counter int/espionage tech thinking along lines of MI6, CIA, KGB etc??

May also be an idea to look at some way of representing terrorism, this could also fall in to the above mentioned tech.

Well, I planned on having Terrorism techs, and Intel. techs, but that wouldn't be it's own branch of catagory, it would fall under Doctrines and Electronics, Sattelites, etc.

Dont matter me. But, yes, replace smaller computer for a really name. But, SUPER sounds... not very well. Micro Computer is well.

Quantum Computers is a good idea, but whats is the finnish time limit ?

Since it's a modern scenario, maybe in place of the nuclear tree you can have chemical/biological weapons research? Chemical weapons can add a very high soft attack value to artillery. Non-rogue nations can have a tech called Geneva Convention that prevents any research into the tree, and you can have tech events for the US that allow you to declare war if a country has acquired certain of the chemical/biological tech prerequisites.

Space should definitely be there, because lots of that stuff (although no practical reason for it) gave a lot of prestige to nations involved. In fact if I remember right China is planing to attempt to put a man on the moon in 2013. Not sure how to work prestige into the game model, and once the war starts it would totally be about fighting tech. I am sure there is some kind of bonus we can give for Space exploration tech. though. Maybe a slight time bonus in research would be nice (although slightly out of place) or something else that makes it worth the time if you have the extra IC to go for it. Just do not make it enough to be top priority. From what I can see you have the extra place for satellite and space exploration tech (putting them together of course), and it is pretty important in our time (even if only for the prestige of saying you did it).

I expect the basic space tech to give some kind of bonus that is useful. but not worth the IC. The advanced tech should be very expensive (read: US/Russia only) and enable all kinds of cool stuff. Russia could get up to where the US is in sattelite-supported tech and the US could delve into all kinds of expensive futuristic stuff that would give bonuses to efficiency and organization. If you were to know there is a tank battallion coming up that valley then you could prepare traps or anti-tank equipment to greet them.

Space Tech, can help to communication,( satellites ), and troops have more organization. If you play whit fog. To launch a "nuke", you launch a satellite, and you discover X km of this territories.

Well, I think that space techs should mostly be sattelites which would help organization, intel, etc. Also, maybe we would add some space techs that represent propaganda and patriotism, and the events would give you more manpower or something (people joining armed forces).

Mayby it is a good idea to build trends into the tech tree. History has shown us that sometimes the defending party has huge advanteges over the attacking party and virca versa.

For example, towards the end of the timeframe, anti-tank systems could be so advanced that they give the defending party a huge advantage against armour, which results in a more infantery style war.

Interesting idea, which would be cool to add. I'd like to get a tech tree down and modify it from that point to make it more interesting.

Any ideas on doctrines, both futuristic and recent?

My ideas for futuristic Chinese and NK doctrines:

Air
1) Effective Firebombing Tactics (using firebombs to achieve objectives other than destroying population centers)

Land
1) Napalm Blitzkrieg (firebombing holes in enemy lines and then pushing through at those points).
2) Enemy Demoralization (employing human wave attacks in combination with guerilla warfare to demoralize the enemy soldiers)
3) Propaganda Compaigns (3 levels?)

Sea
1) Submarine Scattering (basically spreading your small submarine force randomly with large distances in between)
2) Night Time Operations Training (recognizing that the key to gaining surprise is to act in the dark while the sattelites can't see you)
3) Massive Smoke Screens (again, but works in daytime)
4) Nighttime Marine Landings
