Galactic colonization is further future then this game and since the universe of this game has a lot of wars space stuff won't be too major.

Something I suggested with military ages ago, seems relevant here-


Infantry- Infantry
Cavalry- Armoured division
Artiliery- Special Forces


Instead of a siege there is...hard to explain, kinda like street fighting but not total Stalingrad style, like what is happening now in Iraq with rule being consolodated. More special forces helps with this removing the former people in power and any resistance and all. This makes more sence then sieges in the modern day. Instead of fortresses something like a security level or whatnot.
