Chickenwalker?
I just know those big dealies on the ice world (haven't seen star wars for some time so addicts don't start correcting me) and the little thingys on Endor.
Its hard to say where the line is between mechs and robots before there.

Robots are generally under things that are automated, mechs are more usually human controlled... In my experience, more like a mechanical augmentation than a stand alone robotic.

Although i'm sure you'll drag up some japanese example that disproves this, then again the definitions

ROBOT
1 a : a machine that looks like a human being and performs various complex acts (as walking or talking) of a human being; also : a similar but fictional machine whose lack of capacity for human emotions is often emphasized b : an efficient insensitive person who functions automatically
2 : a device that automatically performs complicated often repetitive tasks
3 : a mechanism guided by automatic controls

note: the word auto

The word mechis much more vague, since 'mechs' are simply a sci-fi concept there's no definition for the word, other than that it is an abbreviation of the word mechanic, which is a noun and adjective,

MECHANIC (adjective)
1 : of or relating to manual work or skill
2 : MECHANICAL

MECHANIC (noun)
1 : a manual worker : ARTISAN
2 : MACHINIST; especially : one who repairs machines

MECHANICAL
1 a (1) : of or relating to machinery or tools <mechanical applications of science> <a mechanical genius> <mechanical aptitude> (2) : produced or operated by a machine or tool <mechanical power> <a mechanical refrigerator> <a mechanical saw> b : of or relating to manual operations
2 : of or relating to artisans or machinists <the mechanical trades>
3 a : done as if by machine : seemingly uninfluenced by the mind or emotions : AUTOMATIC <her singing was cold and mechanical> b : of or relating to technicalities or petty matters
4 a : relating to, governed by, or in accordance with the principles of mechanics <mechanical work> <mechanical energy> b : relating to the quantitative relations of force and matter <mechanical pressure of wind on a tower>
5 : caused by, resulting from, or relating to a process that involves a purely physical as opposed to a chemical change <mechanical erosion of rock>

By any means, the sci-fi definition appears to be one of a living creature using a mechanical suit or vehicle to enhance combat.

If that defines the lines, I'll be pleased.

note: these definitions are from the merriam-webster dictionary, an American-English dictionary, so before anyone corrects me on spelling mistakes or points out then it's not the English definitions, I tend to be believe Americans have the jurisdiction on sci-fi these days ;)

Ditto that:rolleyes:

Anyway, are you guys sure that robots will ever replace the human in war? I think they can easily be screwed with.
But when I think about it, that "screw up" thing can be used as a robot-revolt;) :D

Well, the reason why the USA is building flying drones is because the human body is not such a good pilot. It's either too large or unable to handle high G stress. But what if technology advances to such a degree that we can take the bare essentials making up for a human and then hook it up in a machine? This might sound very weird, but what if you'd strip a human of all but his nervous system, his brain and his senses, let machinery do the maintaining of these organs (a task traditionally performed by the body), would you be able to reconnect the nervous system to whatever (tetrapodic, 2 arms, 2 legs ) mechanical body you can build? Would this be you ideal mech, or at least redefine mechanized infantry? Sick or not?

Scientists are already fiddling with interaction between electronics and the human brain, so I'd say it will be a hundred years top.

And Kyran, what 'weaklings' are you refering too? :D

And now for something copletely different, many of you seem to be in favour of the traditional infantry-cavalry/armour-artillery makeup of a MDS army. But what if artillery becomes something like mout-teams or some other innovation in urban warfare? You can use a tool in which artillery becomes avaliable at the apropiate time in the tech tree, and by converting the land.csv file, you can adopt their abilities. The fire phase can then become a 'strategic phase' where armies are trying to maneouver in a better position and trying to undermine the morale and fighting capabilities of the enemy. The shock phase can then become a 'tactical phase' where armies take it head on and try to annahilate eachother using the advantages obtained in the strategic phase.

Possibel tech perhaps.

IIRC the fastest weapon before this had a rate of 6000 rounds/min. The only problems with this weapons are it could be a small problem carrying all the rounds.

I think it should be like the tech and the USA is right about to finish it or is like 3/4 the way through.

While it is true, as Gath said, that carrying 1,000,000 rounds is nearly impossible for the human alone, it could be perhaps mounted on ships, planes (Imagine 600 tons of ammo instead of bombs), or perhaps as it said as an anti-missile shield.

Let's say that when you get to that tech point, you're able to build a bigger fortification (the new name is...? can't remember)

Oh, and shouldn't that be a little longer up on the scale? i.e, we'll start on tech 0 (the west and military countries a little higher, 2 or 3), and that is, for example 6 or 7. That way, the western countries, gets it first. That way, It'll also come around 2003.

It's silly if Land tech 2 comes in 2003... That's 12 years of researching...

Random Nonsense?

Since KT said that the US should be 3/4 to getting that gun-thingie, it would need that the USA had the Land Tech right below the Land Tech which gives you the gun-thingie.

i.e:

LT 12 gives you the gun

If USA is going to have 3/4 of the LT12, they have to have LT11. Usa can't start with LT 11. That was my point.:)
