Dead Horse aside, I don't like the idea of unique national units anyway. A name and a priority for upgrades is enough; if you want elite units just throw them into the worst of the front. They'll learn fast ;)

My practical reason against it is that there was nothing necessarily better about these units across the board; sure, esprit de corps may have been better (but how does one model this in a computer game?), sure, perhaps the equipment was better and the unit better supplied (already modeled). But beyond this? These were men, just like you would find in any other division. At best (and I remain against this) you could argue for a bonus to experience due to "superior training".

Just my two cents.

You can take out a T-34 with a Panzer 1. Just jump out of your panzer, run up to the T-34 and place a satchel charge or molatov or something and then run back to your panzer ^^ what was this thread about again? Unique units? Not going to happen in a million years. Wouldn't it be nice with every equipment modeled in the game and you can zoom down to the level of a single tank and take command of that tank and...also not going to happen huh?

Seriously, I think the HoI3 will allow some more unique stats on the units than HoI2 since you can research different things, but hey you can try to convince Johan that he he wrong. It would be like going up against a Tiger with an FT-17 though.

As far as special units go -

Aren't their main exploits dealt with through the intelligence interface and function?

Yes, they are treated as 'spies', but some of the functions of the spies in going after production, etc. seem to be what the rangers or some of the special forces actually did.

Perhaps a beefing up of the intelligence interface would be enough for people to have their special units:

Have some different types of spies to use:

Information gathering spies:

They are the ones that allow you to see what is being researched (perhaps expand that to what is being built for installations and capital ships).

Civil Spies:

These would be the ones that would be used to cause unrest, etc. Perhaps experienced spies would also give some bonus to diplomatic efforts to sway opinion.

Attack Spies/Special Forces:

These would be your special forces - they would be used for your sabotage, etc. What it would require would be an expanded intelligence report that would list several targets to send them against (rather that the randomness that is there now). Of course, if your intelligence was wrong about one of the targets, your efforts could be directed into blowing up Farmer John's chicken farm instead of that nuclear facility your spy was lead to believe existed there....

Just a thought on how to handle them without actually having a unit counter for them.
