Hi !

Each time I 'buy' a tech from another country, I get a -10 or -9 researsh point decrease.

However, sometimes, another country proposes a tech trade and, if accepted, it generates no loss in researsh point.

Anyone saw this ? Is there a way to initiate it ?

Yup, it's correct. If you take the initiative to the tech trade, you pay RP. If the other country takes the initiative, it's "RP-free".

Dunno if there is a way to encourage such trades. I would think that having good relations would be a start, tho'.

I think it not taking rp when trades are offered to you is a bug.
It is WaD, unfortunately. :( The only positive aspect is that it prevents the player from messing up an AI nation completely by spamming it with less useful techs preventing it from researching. (Which would be possible if it always cost the receiver 10RP to techtrade)

....But it is massively unbalancing in MP. The fight to get that rule changed goes on!

Peter, what if it cost the receiver in such deals Prestige, and perhaps some BB points?
As in the world thinks a bit less of you for not working on the research yourself but are taking the fast and easy road!

Is the AI Prestige conscious and would they think twice when faced with such penalties?

So thats the justification, but what is the rationale?

I thought that you had to pay for tech because most of the cost of tech is in its implementation, not in it's invention. But that rationale would mean that you should always pay RPs for technology (maybe slightly less). Does anyone else have an alternitive rationale for why tech (sometimes) costs money.

I believe that part of the solution would be to use the technology infomation in the AI file to determine the value of tech to the country. Also compare the value of the technology currently under research.
