It just acts as a queue, red means that you're not researching anything because you're not putting enough IC in research.

AFAIK if you have some techs in red, the first is researched at some degree, for example 50%(depends on how much ic is left from fully researched techs). rest is waiting for 'free' ic.

At any given instant though it is either being researched or not and I believe the color will change to reflect that. If the ICs allocated to research are only enough to fund the next item in the queue at 50% then it will be researched every other day.

my experience indicates that it is simply a queue. same for the build queue. that is, funding is always at 100% up to the limit of "funding" allocated.

i always have them "in the red" because it is so difficult to fund exactly at what those things need (actually, both research and building are dynamic in that things are always being finished) plus do you want the micromanagement of remembering to add something to the queue just at the moment that something finishes? in fact, i usually have at least double the funding in both those queues. too many times have i checked the queues to find that ICs are being wasted because something finished production/research and nothing replaced that item(s) in the queue... also, it is not that difficult to move something to the top of a queue if you wish to start work on it.

you can change message settings in options menu, so it'll stop the time every time research is done. that way you don't have 'wasted' ic. there's one catch to that: if, for example your research is going to end at 02.00 Jan 1st, it'll stop at 00.00 Jan 2nd. so for few hours you'll have those ic 'wasted' (although it won't show in the research bar). with units it's similar, but ic spent on building a unit will be available as soon as the unit will be finished (but still you'll get a message 'ready to deploy' next day at 00.00).

understood. what i don't understand is why the time of day does not reset to 00:00 once you go past a day of non-building (or, non-funding of a research)... the micro-management of maintaining a 00:00 time of construction/research can be insane.

that said, it seems to me that you lose a full days of ICs when these things happen. (either the full day at the end, or you lose parts of the first and last days that add up to a full days worth of IC. )

.... for that period of time you are burning fewer resources.

IMO there's no reason to waste time and braincells on trying to figure the exact balance of research needed so you don't spill IC when some research has been completed. Simply overload you tech Q with stuff you want to research. You can always rearrange the items if you discover that you need them in another priority.

And unlike the production Q, research efficiency gains (computers) apply their effect to research allready in the Q. SO there's really no reason to run a minimal research Q.

thanks for the info. i did not know that.

i knew about the rearrange thingy. (although it would be nice to be able to move things in the queue one up/down at a time... )

i checked a few times to try and ascertain if the research efficiency gains effected what was already in the queue, but was never able to figure it out. thanks for the info! that said, i usually run research funding at about 20% to 45% of what is in the queue.

 This is not true! I checked this several times. So I woud not "overload" the research queu too much short before a computer research become available.
