I've been playing the game for a while, but I'm not sure what is more effective. Should you keep up to date on every tech you can, or should you reserch heavily in some areas to become hugely advanced in them?

IMO it is a combination of the two, depending on the country you are playing. If your tech teams are good and you have 5 slots for research then with 4 out of the 5 slots I try to keep up to date on every tech that I can actually use, and I put priority on Industry, Infantry, Land Doctrine for example. You are unlikely to be able to research everything, so at some point you will set priority depending on your tech team abilities. So, with USA or JAP you might want to make sure you are getting Naval techs and doctrines research; not so for SOV though.

If by "research heavily in some areas..." you mean rush techs ahead of time, well that would be the 1 out of 5 slot used to push a tech early, but no more than 12 months early (as a rule). If you mean to ignore other important techs altogether, well I would not suggest that. Again what is important will depend on the country you play.

For GER :
1- Industry - Go for anything except rockets and nuclear until 1942-1943
2- Armor - Go for ARM IV, SPART II,
3- Infantry - Go for 1943 INF, 1941 MOT, 1943 MEC
4- Aircraft - Go for TAC IV, INT IV or FIG II, for Europe you may need CAS II but it is virtually useless after 1st month in Russian steps because of its range.
5- Naval - Go for CA IV CL IV DD IV
6- Land Doctrine - Research when you reach exact year for each tech
7- Naval Doctrine - Research when you reach exact year for each tech
8- Air Doctrine - Whole CAS TAC and INT/FIG trees you may not need STR unless thinking of 1945-46 nuclear attack on USA.

These are enough to get BP nearly 1941 fall 1942 winter. After that research Nuclear, Rocket, STR and NAV to break USA. It is easy to land to USA via Iceland or Bermuda or Newfoundland about 1944 if you dont split your forces for England, Arab Peninsula and India.

Yes I do mean go ahead of time. Most of the time I'm serveral years ahead in infantry and tanks and industry and land docterns, but usually lacking in naval and airplain and their repective docterns.

Unless you want to research everything you will be researching ahead of time quite a bit as a major.

There is a penalty for researching techs ahead of their "historic" date. This penalty is 0.15% per day with a max or 90%(about 2 years). I wouldn't ever research anything more than 12 months ahead of time, but try to stay with 6-8 months of the date. Any of the machine tools or Assembly line techs and 1941 infantry are important enough that I would start them 12 months ahead of time(or maybe a bit more if I had a spot open) I can't think of any other's I would go that early with.

As a rule I try not to research doctrines more than a few months ahead of time. As soon as they are done you get the benefit, you don't have to wait for the units to build.
