I've now had 2 games where the tech tree has broken half way through the game, as i'm still a bit of a newbie I just wanted to see if there is any kind of explanation for what I have come across, here's the problems:

1. As USA (1.03) inventions stopped triggering halfway through the game, so in 1920 the most advanced navy in the world consisted of ironclads and there was no sign of electric gears, telephones, aeroplanes, automobiles AT ALL.

2. As UK (1.03b) in 1890, a few years ago I noticed the land military techs disappearing from the list of available options. I have now maxed out every other tech category and still can't research any land military tech (its stuck at 20/25), i've tried changing my research philosophy, no avail.

So any reason why these would occur? has no one else ever come across anything like this? Any chance I can fix these by altering the save game file?

I had that happen once, may have been with 1.03 before I ran 1.03b. I have not seen it again, tho

1. This seems to happen when your save game is corrupted, never had it happen to me though.

2. Don't some techs only show up after a certain date?

Yep, the land tree stops for a bit during the latter part of the 19th. I had this happen during many a GC, but it did work out in the end. Don't know why, but you've eventually be able to research those last 5 or so.

That is, of course, assuming that there isn't a bigger deus ex machina...

With regards to 2, I think that's because the U.K. starts with Naval Industrial or whatever it is as their tech discipline. I've had problems where after researching all techs of one type ie. Industrial if your research program is for industrial it won't pop up with any new techs to research. Even though it should have had 1 random one for you to pick. Only way to fix it that I found was to just switch your research doctrine and hope you get something you can use.

Oh never mind, he mentioned changing his research philosophy. My guess is that yeah it's not yet available.

Looking in the techtionary I found this:
Infiltration (ID: 1005)

This doctrine was a countermeasure to the stiff defensive lines that tended a whole war to be fought over a few soccer arenas of land. By using disguise and hidden reserves that poured into the gaps in the enemy line a breakthrough could be achieved. Speed was the key here and unfortently for the attackers of the age, armored vehicles, was still a few decade a head.
